Sounds like a cop-out, maybe be true or not, I wouldn't know, but here we expect lamb... that's what I've always received at greek restaurants.

I've had the pork, it's great. Still waiting for them to hit midtown.

It's totally true. Of course most Greek restaurants in the US are loaded up on lamb, the same way Mexican restaurants are forced to sling fajitas and hard shell tacos. Mama, you think you'd be sympathetic.
I've even had it explained by a Greek that the preference for pork even reflects a little historical middle finger to Turkish occupation.

i've been looking for a banging chicken pita ever since i've been away from sinbad's in rochester, ny.
eagerly awaiting their presence in midtown.
-
as an actual person of greek descent, i can say that it is totally true. real gyro is also pork, not lamb.

I dunno. When I was in Greece, somewhere off the beaten path on Corfu, we were indulging in excellent fresh lamb souvlaki, along with 40-cent huge shots (half-glasses) of Ouzo and 50-cent FIX beer. (Of course the prices were in drachmas back then!) Lamb was served in many places, including ones away from the tourist sites. OTOH, I did notice that real Greek salads served in Greece have no lettuce.

@paulnahm: I remember Sinbad's from when I went to UR!
-
@xerlic: it was that good, right? dang, now i'm in the mood for a garbage plate.
when the flip is the souvlaki truck gonna come to midtown?!
-
@paulnahm: So to continue this series of odd coincidences, I clicked your name and noticed that you also work for the UN. Creepy! We should go to Nick Tahoe's for lunch one day.
-
@xerlic: thank goodness you didn't say mark's or gitsis. honestly, the chicken pita would trump the plate...unless we were plastered after drinking copious amounts of beast.
nice one about the UN. i'm in DPI. you?
-
Man, I forgot all about the awesome that is Milwaukee Best. During summer breaks I tried to turn my friends back home onto beast and Lebatt Blue, but they all thought I was crazy. They're probably right.
I work in DESA.
-
i like labatt blue. if i'm not mistaken, it's one of the higher alc% beers.
give me a shout through my UN email (you can search through the directory) if you fancy an after work drink sometime.
-
You mean 5%...derp-a-derp.
Go for "Ice" beers for higher proof. Granted, they are malt liquor and taste terrible...

Some people were questioning why there's no lamb on the Souvlaki truck menu. Here's a quote from a Serious Eats article.
"Sticking to authenticity, that also means no lamb. Wait, and this is a Greek truck? "We get asked this question a lot, and it makes my husband crazy," says Abby. Lamb was, at least originally, a meat you prepared for special meals, like Easter, at home. It wasn't really restaurant food. "A true Greek orders a souvlaki pita and he means pork," clarified Abby. "That's always been the meat in the pita sandwich."
