I haven't eaten at Gourmet 53 for a while. I miss the free coconut shrimps they use to hand out while you wait on line and the pita chips!!
No clue. My fav is their cheesesteak and only difference is the spices they use in the meat. Still good and reasonable for all the food you're given. Also pleasant to deal with, especially the owner.
Next time ask what's in the sammy if not sure you're up to getting a weird surprise again. Their BBQ chicken isn't good either. Blech. I don't like all their offerings. I just get what I want or a big salad once in a blue moon.

kosher sloppy joes are cold cut sandwiches with cole slaw in them.
no idea what kind Gourmet 53 is with grilled chicken on pita.

That sounds like a load of SH*T to me...You should have been given a refund. That'd be like ordering a muffalletta and getting a monte cristo. That's on the establishment. That is "flip out" worthy....

Their line isn't as long as it used to be so I have not been seeing the free coconut shrimps lately.
I was there last week and ordered some new sandwich special..spanish sounding sandwich made with pork...and it was great. It had shredded pork meat seasoned with some spicy sauce(actually tasted like Korean pork dish), slices of avocados..and melted cheese on a long bread.
Their Today's specials are usually pretty good. -
mkim: I saw that new sandwich posted on their door last week and wanted to try it, but it was late in the day and they said that they couldn't make it. Do they always have the sandwich or was it just a special?
It sounded like a take on a Mexican torta sandwich.

Joer, I am not too sure actually. I assume if they sell well, they will keep the menu.

Am I the only one who thinks it's weird to order a sloppy joe from a restaurant in the first place?
-
Yvo, Gourmet 53 is not a restaurant...it's a small deli..not really gourmet either..lol
-
I would order it if it was their specialty. If it isn't, probably wouldn't bother.
Maybe like at a Schnipper's.
Or make your own:

StreetMeasOnsumer3008 - I really dislike their philly cheesesteak. The one time I ordered it, the meat was too thick and did not taste fresh, it was salted to hell, and had overcooked green bell pepper (as opposed to onions). Also did not have enough cheese. ...But maybe I should be glad that at least they didn't give me chicken on pita and call it a cheesesteak?
Goats - Truly I was too stupefied by the "sloppy joe" to go nuclear on the guy.
I've given them enough chances with their food. I won't be returning.

Yeah, if they don't know what a sloppy joe is, they shouldn't be slinging food!
-
Their cheesesteak (not even a philly so I don't call it that) is very salty. Usually a decent grease-bomb though. Maybe I got used to their sammy then. The meat is more like chunks of beef than slices. Oh well.
I don't know the dealie with their sloppy joe. Maybe they did make a mistake but I do know they make sandwiches with pita. PASS if you're not fond of their food then.

Ok, let me ask again: am I the only one who thinks it's weird to order a sloppy joe, anywhere? That's something you make at home...

So, I ordered a sloppy joe from Gourmet 53 and guess what their "sloppy joe" consists of? Ground meat in a tomato based sauce, that perhaps contains finely diced vegetables, on a hamburger bun, you say? NOPE. Whole slices of grilled chicken covered with a thin tomato sauce in between grilled pita - with a slice of yellow American cheese. Did I get the wrong order? NOPE. I brought it back and the guy at the counter says "That's what our sloppy joe is. It doesn't have ground meat or anything." Luckily (for him) he offered to replace the meal with something else off the menu. Now I'm wondering if he was just trying to cover a wrong order and retain the sale - or if they are cracked enough to believe that a sloppy joe is chicken on pita.
