Fresh-N-Fast Burger?

Anyone ever hear of it? Sign is up across from my office on 23rd and park. Google search only pulls up this:

  1. NY Burger Co: Foul. I walked there one day because the line at Shake Shack was so long. After sickening myself with a lousy burger, it was a long walk past the line I was wishing I had stood in.

As of early this morning the brown paper was off the front windows and door. Didn't see any sign if it was opening.

Any shills want to provide some more "anonymous" updates after randomly meeting the owner?

  3. You want to know how I randomly met the owner. Let me tell you...

I run a business with my wife on 23rd street. I was leaving one night to catch a cab to JFK and crossed to the south east side of Park Ave. From that vantage point it was hard to miss the huge ass bright new red sign that was being hung at that particular moment. It said Fresh-N-Fast and unmistakingly reminded me of my beloved In-N-Out. Yes, even an East Coaster can be an InO fanatic.

I crossed the street to peak in the window and there were three dudes standing outside the door looking at the sign. I spoke to them, turns out two of them were the owners, and I asked about getting a burger Animal style. They said at the time they were opening "next week", however this being three weeks ago, I was given bogus info.

ESNY - you can suck it along with PigIron and guy now called Jerry Cougar Mellencamp. I am not an FnF shill. Read back a few comments and see the exchange with Goats. I'm a validated non-shill, buck-o. But seeing as how I spend a large amount of time on East 23rd street, and happen to absolutely love cheeseburgers, I am fervently following the progress of this opening.

Also, for all you fellow 23rd Street-ers. I will be very curious to see how long it takes for there to be a He-Man sighting at this place. http://findheman.wordpress.com/

  4. Looks like a soft opening today. Line is out the door. I didn't have time to stand in line.

Ah, AC Slater, one more shill for the road? I'm tempted to stroll by just to verify the LACK of any line there. Time to fire up the keyboard and tear this place a new one on every local blog I can find. I warned you....

I work out at the NYSC above In-N-Fresh (or whatever). I'll be there in about an hour, so I can report on the activity level. I won't be patronizing them anytime soon however. The whole idea of this place is based on ripping off someone else's business, and that's a huge turnoff to me.

Wicked: please don't tell people to suck it, you sound like an idiot. While I am convinced that you probably don't have a financial interest in this knock-off joint, making shilling posts for a place that had not yet opened is ridiculous, and you're going to get called out on it everytime.

That being said, what is the deal with that shirtless bodybuilder doofus that marches up and down E23? I see he now has a website devoted to him. Or is that HIS website, pretending to be devoted to him? Whatever he's selling, creeping people out on the street is no way to accomplish that. Yuchhh.

  7. I am not trying to hype the line. I am just saying I had 5 min to grab lunch and get back at my desk. It wasn't an insane line, just filled with people inside, and about 10ppl outside. I went to NY Burger Co. instead for the thanksgiving turkey burger. My review: Potential greater than effort, but still good.

pigiron: there's a nymag (i think) article about that dude. He lost an eye in jail, so you notice his Sandy Duncan in person. It is a sight to behold.

Overheard at Fresh N' Fast: "Are you shooting a movie here, or are they REALLY opening an In-N-Out Burger in New York?!?!"

I'm sure that may sound made up, especially considering my previous comments here, but I SWEAR TO BABY JESUS I overheard someone asking that exact question to an employee outside this place around 4:00 PM today. I was on the run so I didn't stick around for the rest of the exchange. So it's not just me that thinks this place is a nearly exact duplicate of In-n-Out (at triple the price).

On the way into my gym at around 3, there were no lines or crowd- but the store did not appear to be open at that point. There was a velvet rope type device across the storefront and what appeared to be two bouncers standing in front (I have no idea if they were bouncers, but they certainly looked like bouncers). Maybe it was only open for press or celebrities or something today? Anyone know? Like I said, I'm not patronizing, but I am curious to hear how the product stacks up.

I actually did walk by this craphole around 2:15, about half an hour after AC Shillster said there was a line "out the door." Besides having a short roped-off line area to the left, there were only maybe 3 people in this line (all were well INSIDE the door!), fewer customers than servers behind the counter. And a couple of homeless people right outside the door--who are NOT customers (I think). I decided to stop next door instead and eat a far preferable Big Bite from 7-11.

BTW, In-n-Out will likely go after these clowns. It's a pretty blatant rip-off of their trade dress, which I doubt will go unchallenged in a market like NYC. Lotsa laughs will ensue.

  10. I ate at FnF yesterday. They were giving away a cheeseburger, fries, and a drink for free which was pretty nice. The fries could have been crispier, but tasty and nicely sized. The burger was good, maybe a bit too much lettuce for my taste but all in all a great classic burger. They had long lines and it wasn't particularly fast, but theoretically they will work that out. There are definitely cheaper options but the burger was fresh and tasty, so if they manage to crank out orders it will be a nice spot. Even with the long line it was only 10 minutes or so which still beats shake shack, their obvious competition. I am hoping they will offer delivery.

  11. will try to give it a try today when i head to my studio on 23rd.

I also tried Lucky's Famous Burgers on West 23rd at 8th Ave last night. Was pretty good - and the counter guy told me the people that opened also looked to In-N-Out for inspiriation. though the Lucky's menu is very extensive.

Also - the He-Man guy on 23rd street. The website is a bit of an homage type site, from I understand he's aware of it, but not affiliated with it. The guy is pretty interesting.

I found the article on that He-Man guy. It was in the NY Observer. Yikes, what a story. I am now certain that he's not some marketing ploy.

  14. just put down my first FnF experience. All in all, not bad - but they've got a lot of room for improvement. Today was their first day in business after yesterday's soft-open-free-burgers day.

First off - the prices - YIKES. For my usual burger place order - a double cheeseburger (if they've got it), cheesefries, and a choc or black and white shake. That's the trio I got (choc shake) and the damage was $17 and change - HIGHER than the same order at Shack Shake.

On to the good. The shake was bigger that the Shack and made from hand-dipped ice cream and milk. Form sense memory, it was much less foamy and much fuller flavor than In-N-Out.

The middle ground. The burger itself was pretty good. Standard potato bread bun, pretty crispy lettuce and tomato. I took the onions and pickle off. The burger was pretty greasy, but had a lot of flavor. The real area for improvement is that it was prety mushy - and had no real "crust" to it - something both the Shack and In-n-Out do extremely well.

The bad. The Shake-like suace was waaaay thin an drifted off my burger and down my hand and arm with way too much ease. Speaking of messy, the fries lacked any kind of crispness whatsoever. Also, I ordered cheese-fries and they had no forks - so it was a very sloppy adventure.

I'll try it again in a few weeks after they get their sea-legs. For the price paid, I would hope the quality mentioned above improves. Though, it's a decent quick fix as is.

Final note - and proof positive the owners are not marketing whizzes. The website. I've been googleing Freshnfast.com, fresh-n-fast.com and all sort of NYC variations but not able to find thier site. And now I know why. The website address, printed on the bottom of the receipt, is http://www.freshandfast.com. Why not jsut name your burger joint that, fellas?
