Funny, I hated Mardi Gras' catfish. It was fishy and oily and grossly overcooked.
East Ocean is as far from me as Elmhurst, maybe further - plus when I go to Elmhurst, I can also stop by the grocery stores. Best Cantonese restaurant in NYC - it pains me to share this with everyone - High Pearl. No contest.
Thanks for the tips :)

@Yvo, where is "High Pearl" ? thanks

It's next to Hong Kong Supermarket... hold one sec...
8222 45th Ave
Queens, NY 11373I never review it because I go there ALL the time.

Ahhh, I do know this restaurant! I just never paied attention to the name. While we are in elmhurst, I feel like I need to give "My thai" a mention. The place is always empty, but the food is always fresh, I don't understand it. but it's pretty good.

Because it has roaches that crawl onto the table while you're eating

and because it's around the corner from Boon Chu, which is much better

Oh you were already there... I've never seen roaches there, though I haven't let roaches keep me out of el paso taqueria. (103&lex) So I take it you've been to all the restaurants up and down Broadway in elmhurst?

I've been trying - I hear Chao Thai off B'way on Whitney Ave (right next to the underpass) is good too, but I haven't had a chance to go yet. Also recently discovered Java Village (Indonesian) (courtesy of Joe DiStefano from both Serious Eats and 3buckbites) on Justice Ave right off B'way and the most expensive items there are the platters, which run $7 each.
Lots of good places over there though!

Ah i've eaten at chao thai before, the thing about chao thai that sticks out the most is that they serve you rice in cute shapes, maybe a heart or something else. but I felt like the portions in general weren't all that great, i did not feel all that full after a meal there.
Minang Asli - the indonesian place right up the street on whitney is worth a try too, it's right next door to lao bei fang. Lao bei fang is a very popular place in the neighborhood.

Never heard of it... will have to try. Any one want to go with me? lol

I been to Minangasli in Elmhurst before. The lady (I believe the owner) there is very nice and food is alright.

I hear Upi Jaya is decent too. I walk by it all the time. I need to go hit them up sometime.
