Dude I walk by Samarkand all the time! I live in Forest Hills as well and let me tell you, there's a Bukharian place nearer to me that smells AWESOME and I just want to go in and order from them but there's no menu, the sign isn't inviting, and when I peek in, everyone looks like they're hanging out at their friend's house. I'm terrified of going in and having them be like, what the hell are you doing here? And then the next closest place to me is a bit fancy schmancy looking and I feel all :( that I can't break the barrier... and then I think that maybe I know how it feels to be in Chinatown and not Asian.
I am definitely going to check out Samarkand now!!! THANK YOU!!!

Elmhurst: Lao Bei Fang Hand Drawn Noodle Shop
Hand drawn noodle with nearly anything you want in it
Pan fried of steam dumplings with their homemade chili sauce.
Cheap and great.

AL@1PP - where in Elmhurst please?

I am terrified of them as well. Gan Eden, King David II... they smell so good but it always looks like everyone in them is from the same village. If you peek past the heavy wooden doors, right? My wife and walked into one on Queen Blvd and like 67th, across from the Starbucks and we felt rather unwelcome. Samarkand has the same vibe, but Api's "Ethnic Food" rules apply. First, you have to visit 3 times within 2 weeks to be accepted. Second, TIP LARGE so you are remembered. Third, if you are the only person in the restaurant NOT of that ethnicity the food is probably authentic (and hopefully good)....

Apikoros, that would be the one that smells amazing all the time!!! The doors/storefront is like covered in newspaper it seems? It's right next to the bagel store at the corner? I constantly want to go in but I'm just like, no way, get stared down and then be the stupid foreigner with all the questions? Nuh uh. There's usually people congregated directly outside, smoking cigarettes or cigars, and when I walk by on my way home after a Mets game, they all stare at me as I inhale the grilled meat smell deeply, peek in, and then scurry on home. Ugh. I've been debating Facebook-status-updating "Anyone Bukharian and wants to induct me into the secret grilled meat eating world?" but I think that might come out really racist sounding. I really don't care WHAT they are, just give me the food. It smells good.

@ apikoros and yvo
I also live in Forest Hills- have not heard of Samarkand(sounds great) but I love Cafe Urzu, which is the same type Ugyar kebabs and such and is byo, I believe.

fressagirl, I tried Googling that and didn't find anything? Is this the place? http://www.on-the-grill.com/images/grillnewsdayarticle.jpg (Googling cafe urzu forest hills new york brought me that)

This is scary. I live in Forest Hills too.
Sharing my home turf with you freaks.... frightening.

Ah I spelled it wrong

I would bring B. Good over from Boston! Some powerfully good lunches there. Sigh.
-
Oh... if you're going to bring Boston into this- than most definitely Kelly's Roast Beef.
-
The little Blue Ribbon grocery on Bedford St. in the West Village with its multitude of delicious toasts and "egg shooters."
Sadly, my new neighborhood is a wasteland that puts Midtown Lunch to shame for lack of options.

If you could bring one restaurant in to Mid Town from your area of residence, for yours and Zach's pleasure, what would it be?
I live in Forest Hills and I would bring Samarkand. We have a large Bukharian Community and a ton of Bukharian restaurants. Some are rather... intimidating. Samarkand is welcoming, still very ethnic, with the best ka-bobs you will ever have. The Ka-Bobs are by the piece, chicken, lamb, chicken wings, meat and liver... Also, they make these meat pies called Samsas.... To die for. A Samsa and 2 ka-bobs will run you $8.00 pre tax, well in our under $10.00 range
