Zach Brooks

A guy asked me for some Flatiron lunch suggestions. Any ideas?

I like Sirtaj on 26th between Broadway and 5th. some of the vegetarian curries are $5.50, or you can get fancy with a two-meat combo for $7.50. whatever you get, it comes with a little cup of raita and white rice, brown rice, or naan.
oh! I always forget this, but the 'one piece of tandoori chicken' option (which I think is $4.95?) comes with a decent sized piece of chicken (if you're not feeling ravenous), plus a plate of rice with a little bit of dal (or something) on top.

There are a few side-by-side options on 17th St., a few doors west from Union Square. (Rainbow Falafel, that place with the sausages in the rolls that they poke a hole in--easy wayne!!), a decent takeout sushi place, etc. There's also Maoz on Union Square East at 16th St. for falafel, the dumpling place on 23rd between 5th/6th. A local favorite is Maffei's for pizza, decent subs, and big mix-n-match pasta options. It's at the corner of 22nd and 6th Ave. Or the hole-in-the-wall Mexican place for pizza and burritos/tacos on the south side of 23rd St., just west of 6th Ave.

And let's not forget the Sophie's Cuban on 23rd St across from the park.

good list stevenp! the mexican place has huaraches btw. I'd also like to point out that "the dumpling place on 23rd between 5th/6th" is Rickshaw Dumplings, the mothership of the dumpling truck!

  9. Waldy's on 6th between 27th and 28th has delicious pizza and I love the double cheese penne. $7.95 for the penne, so not the greatest deal in the world, but when I meet my husband for lunch we'll split a small pizza and an order of penne for $20 (and when you order any two of the pizza/penne/salads you get a free can of Coke/bottle of water)

okaygo--That's it, Rickshaw. Never ate there or from their truck, but I've seen it referenced many times.

Other lunch spots include Eisenberg's on 5th Ave around 22nd ST--very good deli sandwiches and tuna fish salad that is awesome. There's a Blimpies on 23rd bet. 5th/6th that also sells sushi, for when you have that Italian-sub-and-raw-fish craving. You can also pick up some tasty Japanese treats and make a lunch of it at Jas Mart on 23rd right by the end of Madison--they have takeout sushi and a huge assortment of Japanese foods. Live Bait on 23rd near 5th (across from the Park) is also decent, southern food, but I've never had lunch there. The best CHinese around is at Home's Kitchen on 21st between Broadway and Park (closer to Broadway). Their Vietnamese rice noodles are killer, and their large menu of lunch/dinner specials is definitely above average Chinese. If you're feeling crazy, there's a Walgreens on 23rd at Park that *might* have deep-fried Walgreen sandwiches. And a 7-11 across Park if you want a lunchtime Slurpee with your Big Bite.

I'd recommend avoiding Comfort Diner on 23rd bet. 5th/6th. The food is generic at best, disappointing, and overpriced. For great diner food in the area, check out Malibu Diner on 23rd just east of 7th Ave. They have the huge classic diner menu and the food is really good. Or, Chelsea Papaya is just a few steps west on the corner of 23rd and 7th.

Heck, I should just get back to Zach and start reporting officially on the Flatiron (South of Midtown) area, as this is my 'hood where I live and work these days.

    Comfort Diner closed...

Yay! I didn't know that but I chalk it up to karma. The place tried to be trendy but food and service were a fail.
