I still think sub-forums would be a good thing. Otherwise, this is just a 'forum' and not 'forums'. Or you should call it 'topics' since that's all you have in the single 'forum' :)

  2. The link to the City 75 post on the map is broken.

  3. Zach Brooks

    @MPKalina - Fixed! Thanks...

Hi Zach, can we get the capability to edit our posts? If not, can someone delete my email address from the downtown street meat a palooza thread that I put there temporarity for Yvo? Thanks!

  6. Yvo

This is an odd one, came to the forums this morning and on the right hand side it showed a link to the new Downtown Lunch post, clicked on it, and 'not found', noticed your post saying it'd be up in a few minutes... and Mamacita's Happy Hour post is showing up "Stumble Drunk Through Times Square with Takeout Beet from Pronto Pizza" though when I click, it isn't found. Just FYI that your scheduled posts are showing up in those links on the right early... even though they're still invisible on the main site :)

  7. Zach Brooks

@Yvo - That's a weird one... looking into it now. Thanks!

Map is busted on map page and also does not allow login/comment in ff3

  9. raphael

@greenermjr Sorry you're having trouble! I emailed you the comment below, but maybe other people are having problems as well and will step forward, but here are some questions to hopefully figure out what's going on:

Just FYI: I tested the maps and login/commenting in FF3 on Windows and Mac and IE6/7 on Windows (I'm writing this comment in FF3...)

    Re: the map:
When you visit the map in FF3 - do you get any error messages? Is it just FF3? Does the map just fail to load? Are you able to see regular old Google Maps, for example, here: http://maps.google.com ?
Can you see this map? http://midtownlunch.com/maptest.html

    Re: login/commenting:
You're able to log in and comment using another browser but not FF3? It's possibly a cookie problem: I'd recommend deleting all the Midtown Lunch cookies in Firefox (under preferences, privacy, show cookies) and try to log back in.

Let me know if that fixes that problem!

  10. with the growing number of forum topics and posts...i sometimes find it hard to rememeber where i commented or if anyone commented after me...if there any way to perhaps receive a notification (kind of like facebook) where it notifies you if someone comments on something after you? not in email form cuz that might be to spammy...im not sure how advanced something like that would be considering my knowledge to PCs is limited ot word and excel.

    @Samwich: You've got a few options:

If you go to your profile page, you can see all of your recent forums topics and comments.

For forum topics, you can also set a topic as a "favorite" — those topics will then be listed on your Favorites page (there's a tab on your profile page for favorites).

You can also subscribe to the RSS feed for comments for all forum topics (if you happen to use RSS).

  12. Zach,

Though it's terribly appropriate given the actual landscape, it's time to change, "... THE FOOD WASTELAND OF MIDTOWN MANHATTAN" to ".... THE FOOD UTOPIA OF MIDTOWN MANHATTAN" from the site title.

You gotta' think of your future site visitors, especially the out-of-towners looking for a taste of what the locals eat.

Don't scare them away. Embrace their curiosity, and reap the rewards of future viewership.

    Hi Zach,

I am logged in to comment in the forums, but not on the actual site. Whenever I try and comment it says log in or register. I click log in and it takes me to the top of the page.

Kind of weird. Its killing my ability to be smart and witty.

  14. adamprato

URL's posted in a topic don't get converted to links. Only url's posted in a comment get converted to links.

    Latest example:

    http://midtownlunch.com/forums/topic/nutrional-info-halal

  15. raphael

@dougiec - let's get to the bottom of this!
    What browser are you using?
It could be a cookie problem - Have you tried clearing your cookies?

  16. I'm trying to leave a comment on the recent page about Cer Te's soft shell crab sandwich, but for some reason, only on that page, it keeps telling me "You must log in or register to post a comment." -- but I'm already logged in :(

  17. nvm - seems to be working now!

  18. raphael
  19. raphael

@adamprato: thanks for the heads up. It's fixed - all URLs posted in topics should turn into links now.

  20. adamprato

    I just noticed. Looks good.

  21. adamprato

When composing a new topic, I get this character count that starts at 400 characters remaining. Though long after I exceeded the character count (where it stayed at 0 characters while typing), I wasn't prevented from typing more than 400 characters, and my post still went through.

Is there an actual character limit? Will it soon be enforced or should the character count be removed?

  22. raphael

@adamprato it was more of a suggestion, but you're correct - it should be enforced - 100 characters for title, 800 characters for the description.

  23. adamprato

    Thanks raphael.

Next bug - The url matching breaks at the exclamation point. This url get's broken up:

    http://www.spy.org/tmp/kogi/!_ALLNAILS_!.html

(I could suggest a good regexp for a url if that would help).

  24. greenermjr

I was reading the sweet treats post and clicking "login to reply" and the screen initially takes me to login. But after login, when returned to the thread there was no leave a reply box, even after refreshing.

But when I jump to the forums (this thread), I am logged in and get the leave a reply box.

  25. adamprato

grenermjr, that happens from me time to time as well.

I'm not so sure it's a site thing. I use firefox and usually have a large number of open tabs.

Do you do the same by any chance?

  26. adamprato

Raphael/Zach - There may be an issue with backtracks. Check out the bottom posts here:

    http://midtownlunch.com/2007/09/19/all-you-can-eat-meat-at-the-international-food-house-restaurant-buffet/comment-page-1/#comment-217106

The comments look like useless spam without anything to click on to see who was linking back to the post.

  27. I logged in but can't post a comment. When I click on the log in button, it just brings me back to the top of the page.

  28. Zach Brooks

@NYCguy - Try logging out and clearing your cookies. Then log back in again.

  29. adamprato

Raph/Zach - I really wanted to read this article, but I cant because the trackback links don't work :)

Small Vendors Wage War For Survival In Brutal Urban Environment : The Feedbag

i tried to leave a comment to win the contest for today's posting and even created an account but when I click on login, it doesn't work :(

  31. adamprato

This would make for a good improvement on the website:

Have the post page analyze the post then ask "You appear to be responding to DocChuck09. Do you wish to feed the troll?" With a 'yes' and 'no' button.

  32. adamprato

Zach - perhaps you need a sticky post for New Restaurants, where you tell the shills to be upfront about their shilling.

Plugging your restaurant by being honest about it is respectable.

Creating an account for the sole purpose of pretending to be a hot topic by eaters, not so much...

  33. I can't leave a reply on the tamale lady!

  34. talida

Something weird's going on with the comment boxes. I had problems with commenting on the Trini Paki post - I logged in, but I still saw the log in prompt.

Unfortunately I can't recreate the bug anymore.. like I said, weird.
