Eats in Southern Florida?

stevenp

I'll be in Florida next week--somewhere between West Palm/Boynton Beach, Pompano Beach, North Miami Beach. Any tasty recs for these areas? Looking to try something different than the high-quality Taco Bell (that you can't get in NYC!) and chain options (had to try Sonic, and they have many Steak & Shakes there). Wings, Mexican/Caribbean, anything. I've been to a great Greek place at the corner of Atlantic Ave and Military Trail in Delray Beach, but other than that, I don't know what to try. Any Floridians here have some suggestions? I would not ignore any good bufffet places either. Thx.

  2. Whale's rib in delray

  3. Bluefin Sushi & Thai Grill in Boca Raton. Get the lobster bomb.

  4. You must be visiting your parents.

Any chance they live at Lakes at Delray? It is where my mom lives and I if I remember correctly it is right near Atlantic and Military Trail. We are heading down there in June after school is over.

BTW... You can try Azteca in Davies - it is a mexican chain, supposed to be pretty good. Also try J. Alexanders in Boca, similar to Houstons, but with a menu twice the size. Good quality like Houstons.

Thanks for the recs! I will likely be checking out more than one, depending where I am at mealtimes. Joe, you got that pretty much right. My mom still has a place at King's Point, pretty close to the Lakes. Although she recently got a place in Lantana (just below West Palm) with a yard, etc. to do gardening and all.

How about Swanky's Low and Slow BBQ in Lake Worth (near Boynton). Sandwiches made with pulled pork that has been cooked for 30 hours.

hmmm... Swanky's seems to be a mobile bbq cart. Might be tricky tracking them down, but I'll try!

  8. I had dinner at J. Alexander in Boca just last week. It was fine. Decent quality, diverse menu. But if you want a meal more typical of the restaurants profiled on ML, try Havana, on S. Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach (just a few minutes off of Rte 95). Really excellent Cuban food. I had lunch there last week and had an excellent steak sandwich (on Cuban bread with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and potato sticks), a side of rice and beans, and a soda -- all for $15 including tax and tip. BTW, if I ordered my meal at the takeout counter instead of dining in, it would have been less than $13.

I actually have a good rec myself, if anyone finds themselves in So. Florida. Duffy's Sports Grill (several locations) has great food and is really cheap. Besides the $6.99 daily lunch specials, they have a $10 Monday night dinner--any menu item, including a full rack of tasty ribs or a yellowfin tuna steak. The tuna is sushi quality (my gf is very picky and liked it!), much better than what I've paid 3x as much for at Blue Water Grille in Union Square. They also have 40% off all menu items M-F 2-4pm, and a happy hour daily from 5-7 pm and 9-closing, with 2-for-1 drinks. (They bring the 2 drinks at once.) Their dirty martinis are even very good. The prices are silly for great quality food! I'll be there at least once next week, for sure.

so decided to finally create an acct to help out with this. i second the recs for bluefin sushi and whale's rib. and i actually think i've been to duffy's if there is one in delray, i remember getting some cheap ribs that were surprisingly not too shabby. anyway, check out calypso a little north of ft. lauderdale airport for some good carribean food, and little moir's food shack btwn west palm and boca for amazing seafood. the also have my dad's favorite beer: monk in the trunk

Thx uncle! I'll have this list with me and try to check some of these places out. I had the ribs at Duffy's and they were definitely above average--not authentic 'cue but better than the typical chain ribs. And $10 for a full rack is crazy.

Uncle's bicep looks like a perfectly round ass.
