DocChuck

Fred

In the comments on a fairly recent MTL entry (http://midtownlunch.com/2009/10/23/midtown-links-the-chicken-pot-pie-edition/), Zach indicated he was considering banning me and DocChuck as he is "sick of the same back and forth every day"

I understand this concern, and promised in a subsequent comment that I would cease and desist; and I have kept that promise

I will confine my comments on DocChuck (& his many alternate login identities) here, and intend it to serve as a reference on the subject

Full disclosure:
1) I'd like to see DocChuck banned from this website, just as he is from most other well written food websites, like SE and OTB
2) I (like DocChuck) am not located in NYC, but I like to read about NYC, especially it's food scene. Also, this website is very enjoyable to read

Adam: I dont think DocChuck has the technical savvy and/or wherewithal to not only ensure he comes in via multiple IP addresses, but also to ensure that each personality consistently uses the same ip address each time. Please note that Perlow shows him logging in 4 different identities via the same IP address.

Zachova knows all my posts at timed GMT.

Adam looks like and Albino Silent Bob.

I believe that the only DocChuck is the 09, the rest are just having fun. I'm a Fred fan so hope you stay, I also look forward to your Freak of the Week comments! And the DCBOD personality, DCH ... hahahha I miss them.

When you have the internet, you are going to have troll jobs. It's just the way it is. He even senses that people are getting tired of his comments. Just don't feed the troll. It's just too bad he claims he comes from my hometown of Houston.

    I miss the hamster

To ease your worries, mghu, he is not from Houston - he is from Mountain Home, Arkansas.

You know... I always type out a response to docchuck's remarks but I almost never click "submit." because i won't. I won't submit to being affected by these infectious sentiments you both breed about, bandying your pointless accusations.

Fred, if you can't exercise restraint then you're no better than DC. Arguing with someone about how wrong their opinions are in your fashion is akin to chronic masturbation, to punctuate the point with some crude imagery. It is a sick obsession that you should just keep to yourself. Keep your hands at bay and stop stroking that ego because no one will win and you'll only be hurting yourself.

This topic is not helping your cause because you are flat-out stating that you won't stop bashing DC on the site. I don't see how any of your attacks on him could ever be justified. There shouldn't be a place for that anywhere on this site because this is not a congregation of HATE.

Personally, I really can't stand it when I look for a review in the comments and come across your and docchuck's negativity, which this very post is practically breeding. How rude of you to take your personal qualms with someone you *don't even know* and inject that into the community.

And I know I'm a hypocrite for being this rude with my assumptions about you and I apologize. However, that does not mean my assertions were groundless. The point that really tipped me over the edge was the fact that in that chicken pot pie post, he was actually complimenting the damn pot pie. Complimenting.

You had no reason to interject in what could have been a very pleasant exchange.

  8. Cosilicious

I love chicken pot pie and like mamacita, I miss the hamster, and the blow up doll... those are much more amusing ways to interact than direct responses. bring back the hamster! *twitch*

  9. Cosilicious

    PS deanlo - excellent post.

Deanlo: although he was indeed complimenting the potpie, the buildup story around said compliment was all fake. The lie was my reason for interjection, although you say I had no such reason. That said, if you had to ratio how often his disparaged New York, it's citizenry, and/o its foods to the times he praised same, I think it is fair to say the unnecessary derogatory remarks outnumber the nicer ones by at least 12 to 1. Conservatively.

I like this website. I like Zach's energy, mission, and writing style. I like the community of reads and commenters here. Can you not see how much better it'd be if DocChuck's pure troll presence were absent from the website? Do you not acknowlege that he has been banned from many other foodie websites for the same behavior he inflicts on us every single day?

I think this (and any) website is far better off with him absent than him present, and if that position makes me a troll (tho I dont think it does) then I guess the label fits.

One other thing - I think the absence of my comments from the main website entries is a big adjustment on my part, but you seem to be saying it isn't. Can you clarify? I mean - for the past week or two, you are still getting all of DocChuck's spew, but none of my responses. Given your stated feelings on the matter, I would normally conclude that this is (from your point of view) an improvement.....how again is it not?

mghu: a website can eliminate trolls by simply enforcing logins and then not approving the registration of trolls - or by ipblocking the ip address the troll comes in from. Many many websites previously infested with DocChuck, like serious eats, have eliminated this problem in such fashions. So a website does not have to live with a troll, they can dispose of them if they wish to do so.

It is ironic that I disagree with you on so many levels but still support your right to speak so freely -- even if you are trying to impugn someone else's.

    ...

I'm conflicted now because I can't just sit here and watch you create a hate group/people's coalition against one man with whom you have a personal vendetta; a man who doesn't quite exist, who you will never meet, and who just happened to get under your skin. And worse yet, you want to excommunicate him from the entire internet. That is a bit ridiculous.

I fail to see a reasonable cause for this call to arms. He can make new aliases. He can change his IP. He can do a multitude of things worse than merely criticizing us if he is vindictive. Even worse, another troll could take his spot. Nothing good can come out of this beyond temporary peace.

To answer your question: your absence from the main website only displaces the problem, it doesn't solve it. You've just moved your outlet for displeasure to another part of the neighborhood. So basically, if Zach never bans his IP and purported multiple aliases, then you'll just keep bashing away to your heart's content. That's not very constructive. I think it detracts from the purpose of the site and the forum.

This is getting epically ridiculous...I am laughing my ass off and shaking my head....I could write a diatribe myself, but I just look to the Chris6's comic--who the f**k cares if somone on the Internet is wrong...!!LOL If somone offends you, just don't read their posts!

  14. Fred

You make a good argument, Deanlo, but one of your conclusions is proven as without merit by experience. You say that at best, only a temporary respite would occur were he to be banned, and yet, no! - on other websites where he has been banned, the participating community no longer has to put up with him. He himself has commented bitterly about no longer being able to participate in SE and OTB, and taken sour-grapes type shots at those websites as a result. Any website that has made the effort to keep him out has indeed kept him out.

That said, although only a few of you have chimed in, it sounds like you are OK with this psychopath telling you every day how awful your city is, how stupid you and your fellow citizens are, how 1 of every 5 of you have HIV and/or AIDS, how awful your food is, and how he himself is so much better in every way than any of you?

    Really?

You want that kind of unpleasantness in an otherwise cheerful and upbeat (well, ok, mostly) site like this one?

I daresay if you met an individual at a party who was conversationally DocChuck's equivalent, you'd quickly label him as insufferable and obnoxious and seek to put as much room between yourself and him.
