check the map.
-
is it... is it cheaper there? can't be... must be an upgrade. congrats!
-
There is a taco bell on 50th and 3rd....or 51...
-
Yeah, look at the top-left of this page. "Find Lunch:", use iether "By Name" for some of the names you might have seen us talk about, or "By Location" to see a map, or "By Food Type" if you're looking to organize whats available. You're 3 streets, 1.5 avenues from me. There's tons available by you. The famous cart, Papa Perrone, Schnitzel & Things on Tuesdays, Cravings on Thursdays, Cer Te, etc etc etc.
-
I'm so embarrassed to admit this here, but my first thought was Chop't. I can't help it, the Santa Fe with fried chicken is a damned good salad!
-
i am sure i can come out with a list of restaurants i can go but i wanted a few 'good' ones. i can't wait until i try Schnitzel & things. but i must end my love affair with three Japanese restaurants on 41th street. arggg...
-
Well, people comment on zach's posts, so what better way to find out what zach and other people think than to look at the restaurants in your area which were already reviewed. also, people have differing tastes, one's must-haves are another's must-avoids. Your best bet is to use that 'find lunch:' section to figure out whats available, see what piques your interest, and go for it.

Jim Lahey's ripoff pizza place is moving to Park Avenue? Or did you mean something else?
-
my biggest regret about working on 5th and 53rd is the distance to the Japanese trinity. For Japanese, I like men kui tei, they do take out ramen and chahan, and the original katsuhama also has a take out section. Also, since they are right outside your window, you should check out the Indian food cart. I like La Belecca on 49th btwn Lex & 3rd for heroes (usually eggplant parm) and there is an El Rey del Sabor at the end of that block.
-
blarney stone, if you can make the trip and stand the crowd. 12pm is always better than 1pm.
gourmet 53 on 53rd and 3rd (downstairs) has really good deals and I usually default to that place. you get a sandwich, soda, cookie, chips/fruitsalad/jello for about $7.50.
rafiki's cart on 50th and 3rd. el rey del sabor another block away from that.
if you go down to 2nd ave you can try the chilean place or the turkish joint that just opened up.

gourmet 53, here i come.lol
-
gourmet 53 has to one of the best options around here. my office is also near you. long line looks discouraging, but moves very quickly, not slow and painful like the trucks with huge followings. gourmet 53 is a well-oiled machine. zach also wrote an article about it before anyway. depending on what you get it's either 6.95 or 7.50 unless you go with the more expensive entrees. and salads are 5.95 small i believe to 6.50 large . some sands come with fries. if your food doesn't come with fries or any side, then ask for their pita chips - which i always do when ordering a salad. deal-maker is free chips or fires, cookie, fruit salad or jello, and eh, can of soda (not included with salads but not a deal-maker for me. i see people just jack soda with their salads anyway. they don't seem to care. i don't do that cuz it's not a deal-maker and only soda...cookie, fruit salad, and pita chips!!!) usually, there's also a dude giving out free coconut chrimp or bruschetta for those waiting on the long line. go with the shrimp.
i'd pass on rafiqi's. not worth it for halal. go to XPL on 48th and Park instead for better flavors and rice. and if you don't mind the walk cross-town, go to the 53rd and 6th cart.
-
Thanks guys. Today is my first day at the new location. i took my coworker to the Gourmet 53 and we both loved the place...though coconut shrimps were a bit too sweet for my taste.
I am going to try XPL tomorrow.
I actually made a list of places to go this week. LOL -
You are now closer to the NY Craving's truck. It usually parked on 53rd, between Park and Lexington on Thursdays.
-
thanks Prez. I can't wait to try their pork chops.
-
I could have tried the Rickshaw today since they parked right near my office but instead, i went all the way down to XPL. but it's ok. the food is good!!
-
I say avoid Rickshaw!! But, Make sure you try Hawai'ian place on 53rd between 2nd and 3rd... Mmmmmm, so much food and ever so tasty
-
I went to Men kui tei for lunch today. We ordered a plate each of shumai and gyoja which were delicious. it was good to know that they were all hand made in the store by this old grandpa who seems to know what he was doing. hehe. I ordered Miso ramen which was delicious as well. Not as salty as ones from Sapporo which is def plus for me.
-
Today was the day for Hawaiian island Grill on 53rd street. It was co operating with Hakata grill. I actually don't know the differences between the two except they each had their own menu.
I ordered the pork chop and my coworker ordered some kind of stirred fried beef. Both were good but I liked my pork chop better. The owner at the counter was extremely nice and gave us big samples of Kalbi and huli huli(sp?) chickens for us to try. Kalbi was tasty but the chicken was nothing different than your average rotisserie chicken.
The inside secret is that you can go there and order different kinds of prepared meat, fish, noodle and rice for $7!!! He just dumped a huge amount of food and only charged $7! I couldn't believe it. -

any comments on Ariyoshi on 53rd and Donburiya?
-
Ariyoshi had $12 lunch special which was excellent.
You get tons of side dishes like fresh tofu, 2 pieces of sashimi, 3 gyozas, mini hamburg steak, pickles, soup, salad and as a main, i got a salmon teriyaki. I thought it was a great deal. I left super full. -
Today I finally got to try the fried pork chops from Cravings truck which was parked right infront of my office building. They gave 2 chops with lots of sauce to eat with rice. I don't know..it was pretty ok but too salty for my liking. i didn't really like it that much. Maybe i will try the fried chicken next Thursday.
-
I went to Gulluoglu today for lunch. I had a pressed sandwich, spinach pastry, lentil soup and 4 different kinds of baklava.
They were all fresh and tasty but the service was slow...though very friendly.
Baklavas were actually a bit disappointing. I like the ones that are flaky, abit chewy and crunch but these were abit too waterly and not as flaky. -
I like Ariyoshi, but for dinner only. My experience at Donburiya during lunch time made me want to rename the place to Dumbariya. The waitresses were fairly inept.
If you like Indian, Bricklane II (right near Hakata Grill) has a pretty good lunch special: $10, and you get an entree, unlimited amount of daal, vegetables, basmati rice and naan bread.

What's my lunch options now?
