Cevap Truck on 51st and 6th

Jnobianchi

I just ran across the Cevap Truck on 51st between 6th and 7th in midtown, the first time I've ever seen it here. I've checked their website, and sure enough, they've been here for a couple of days.

Aside of the fact that its great to have finally sampled their excellent boreki and cevapi without having had to leave my job's doorstep (!), this got me thinking.

How many of the city's carts routinely, or occasionally, set up shop in a different location? Is this an increasingly common practice, made possible, I'd guess by social networking feeds?

What are other people seeing?

99.99% trucks change location daily. Carts normally stick to the same location though. Must be a bitch to hook them up to your truck and be constantly moving.

It was a nice surprise for me too! And the food was great, but friggin expensive. I thought the draw to food carts and trucks were that they were fast, cheap, and delicious. Nowadays, it's only the last of the three. And the better the food, the longer the wait and pricier it is!
First it was the burger scene, then street food, and now $1 pizza slices are popping up more and more. What's the next trend....

Nice! Thanks for the heads up!

  4. they used to be an amazing deal at 5 dollars for their main dishes, which are now 10 dollars. wish they met somewhere in the middle like 7 or 8 which is fairer for their portions

they were there again today. i gave them a look and agree that its on the pricier side, and though i'm usually willing to try anything once, i had to pass. my other fear was paying that much, only to be hungry afterwards.

coincidentally, I also stopped by today and got the cevapi. They are at 51 and 6/7.
I was disappointed that it was $10. I think if it was $2-3 cheaper, I would be more inclined to return. $10 seems steep for what you get, and I was still hungry after I ate lunch. I am going to have to grab a kati roll for a snack this afternoon! LOL.

The red sauce was odd to me...very tangy. I was glad to try it though anyway. I am always open to try new things. There were about 4 breakfast sausage size sausages in the pita. I added in the cream-cheese like white stuff, and the red stuff, and some on the salad in the pita.

It was ok, and I am glad I tried it, but I probably would not get it again, unless they dropped the price to $5.

I want to try the balkan burger, which I assume are like pljeskavica (the Bosnian/Croatian) version of a burger). I've had pljeskavica in Queens and they are awesome (Bosna Express in Ridgewood!).

oh, and to answer your question, Jnobianchi, some trucks or carts are in the same spot every day (Kwik Meal for one example). The carts are more likely to stick to one spot. Many of the trucks move every day. I think there are three reasons:
    1. the trucks have territorial wars for prime spots
    2. spread a wider net of customer satisfaction
    3. demand creates frenzy

I have this theory that the trucks like to move around to appease several neighborhoods, but also to create frenzy. For example- go check out the line for Kimchi Taco Truck. It is an hour. Now go check out the line for a truck that is in the same spot every day. It is less. If lunchers know Kimchi is only on their block on Wednesdays, they are going to be more willing to wait on line for hour, than if they are unsure if they will ever see the truck hit their block again. Obviously lines are impacted by the newness of a truck, but I think the limited availability increases demand as well.

Basic High School Economics Supply and Demand concept applied to our bellies.

i'd say Uncle Gussy's is probably the slight exception to the rule, chowsue. they're in the same spot (51st & park) everyday, yet they have a pretty decent line every time i go (weather permitting, but even on some rainy days theres a nice line). maybe not an hour like Kimchi Taco, but Uncle Gussys also pounds out orders a whole lot faster.
