Central Asian Shaslik

Archivist

After Taam Tov in the Diamond District (whose prices doubled after they relocated) are there any good value joints to get Uzbek/Central Asian shashlik/kebab and plov without emptying the wallet? And without having to head to Rego Parkistan -- home of the best Central Asian foods in North America. If it were a faster subway ride, I'd eat there all the time.

Unhelpful... but can you tell me more about the best Central Asian food in Rego Park? Recommendations, both for restaurant and dish? I live nearby and would love to explore the cuisine. Thanks :)

Sure. I used to live there, albeit briefly, and quickly got hooked on the cuisine.

Tandoor, 63rd Dr @ 102nd (across from Pioneer Market) - north of Qns Blvd.
All shashliks are superb, excellent soups, great french fries toppe diwth garlic and herbs. It's Kosher too.

Cheburichnaya, 63rd Road (South of Qns blvd)
Very good shashliks, especially lamb. has a very large selection of meat options, including exotics like testicles (haven't tried them).

    Ganey Orley, 102nd near 65th.
Never ate there but the smell of the shashlik wafting around the street drove me nuts. Someday I'll make it there.

    Salut, 108th St.
Everythhing hrere is excellent, especially the french fries (not a very Central dish but they are the best fries I've had naywhere on earth...the same is true for Tandoor).

The time I went Cheburichnaya had the balls to be out of lamb testicles.
