Can someone explain the mystique of Shake Shack?

Goats

I live a block off Madison Square Park. I see people lining up all hours of the day and night for the burgers, fries, and shakes. I've had the food. It is slightly above average, at best. There is not a hidden tribe of secret gourmet chefs in the basement of the building, so what gives? Why do people flock to this place like it's a burger mecca? It is not particularly cheap, nor is it anything to write home about. I call it a tourist trap, but I am hoping sommeone has some insight to prove me wrong...

IMHO Burger Joint is way better than Shake Shack which reminds me of the funky taste from the black label @ City Burger. If you go to Burger Joint avoid the prime lunch hours .. 3:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon and you'll get your order quick

MarisainMidtown - the food IS made 2 minutes before. It's freshly made when you order it, thus the wait sometimes being completely ridiculous.

Also, I took a peek at the Shack cam this morning around 11:30 when it was still rainy and gross and was surprised to see how long it was. Seriously, I don't think it's worth waiting an hour in line just to order for these burgers, but they're damn good.

And not to be nitpicky, though I guess it is, but ESNY - if the burger is double or triple the size, it is NOT identical to the SS burger. Part of the appeal of the SS burger is that it's sized properly for my personal tastes.

ok, Yvo, you got me. The contents and preparation of the burger are identical. Same exact meat blend/source (both danny meyers restaurants), same cooking method, same salty crust. The difference are the size and the bun. Blue Smoke uses a sesame seed bun. Its a pub-style shake shack burger. I have heard that you can ask them for two smaller burgers rather than one large one and they'll do it free of charge, but I cannot confirm.

  4. I love the blue smoke burger. By being thicker it also means you can do things like order it medium rare - bloody juicy La Freida goodness!!!

Only in NYC do people name-drop the beef supplier.
