Burger Talk: In-n-Out not all that.

stevenp

I know it's slightly out of ML boundaries (by thousands of miles!) but there's been sporadic talk of the virtues of In-n-Out burgers here and on other blogs, where they're described as being the "West Coast's [superior] answer to Shake Shack or Burger Joint," etc.

Well, I finally had an InO burger a few days ago (2x2, animal style). It's clearly a great fast food burger, fresh and tasty and well worth $3.50 or so when comparing to NYC burger prices. Better than a Shack burger? Not even in the same league.

The InO burger patties are very thin, cooked all the way thru, with a generic fast-food texture and taste. OTOH, burgers from places like the Shack/BJ have thick, juicy patties where the meat flavor stands out. Not the same at all. My curiosity is satisfied--not an InO fanatic.

FWIW, last weekend I brought two decidedly non-food blog reading types to Shake Shack. They didn't know about the place and all the drama and rep.

As soon as they bit into their burgers they both started going on about how these were the best burgers they ever had. Well, one friend I had previously brought to Veselka, so there was some discussion about that, weighing the two.

So despite all the yammering about the Shack, best not best, thin patty, fat ones, etc...it's still a damn good burger that makes people happy. Of course I had to get greedy and order a double which totally destroys the meat-bun ratio. I never learn.

Personally, I can never resist ordering the double stack, which adds the fried cheesy mushroom between the patties. Destroys the ratio, destroys my arteries, destroys my waistline.... pleases my tastebuds.

my comments are not really relevant still to the thread since I do try to focus on work during the day, but A-A "double double" is as good if not better fast food burger as compared to the likes of wendy's, McD, checkers. in and out is in this class for me as is sonic and even dairy queen.

someone should do a burger matix that compares like to like is all i am saying. matter of fact, I may just do so myself...

i do not care for the shake shack burger. nothing special aside from having to wait online all day for a not that great burger one can find pretty much anywhere. the only thing that sets them apart is the line, which probably makes it taste better then it is

@mikeNYC: next time if you go to A-A, order a double double with cheese and a knish and tell me it was not good. The place nextdoor (Marshall's) does have good ice cream. it used to be a Carvel and the owners bought out the franchise to make a better product. Check out either the by the scoop mint chip or if they have it, banana soft serve.

Stevenp, I'm aware. I grind my own meat (grinder attachment on the kitchen-aid stand mixer), and I usually use sirloin. Although chuck tastes great, supermarket chuck needs to be stewed/roasted/souped to render out all the fat, otherwise it's ultra-greasy.

I'm more of a fan of a patty-melt style burger. I basically make a burger, then make grilled cheese (white american), then slap the burger between it. I often add crumbled bacon (hormel pre-made crumbled bacon stuff marketted towards salad eaters) as well.

(I still like the schnitz burger better, but that might be because of their relish...)

  5. WhattaBurger is a better fast food hamburger...beats in and Out and I swore by I&O before I had Whattaburger...shake shack is all hype...burger joint in the parker is much better and faster.....

  6. Everyone that thinks In-N-Out is not a fabulous burger is definitely smokin crack. INO doesn't even compare to the majority of the burgers on the East coast. As a previous burger flipper at INO and a burger fanatic, I have to say INO is the absolute best. Shake Shack is inconsistent. They use crappy ingredients and there's no love in the burgers. People need to get off Shake Shack's ass.

  7. @NoPickles: I will check them out again. I don't get out to Long Island much now that beach season is over. But when I'm there I'll give them another shot. After all, Long Island Cheeseburger sucks, too, and Bobby Flay's is too far away. So whattamigonnadoforaburgeranyway?

I will say the place was packed and everyone seemed happy. Except for the fat grouchy burger snob in the corner of the parking lot mumbling to himself about his soggy hot dog roll....

challah: In-n-Out is an excellent burger. It's just that it is the fully-cooked thin-patty "fast food" variety. I think a thicker, fresh burger has more tasty meat character. And I disagree that the Shack uses "crappy ingredients." That statement sounds like sour grapes--Shack rolls, cheese, lettuce, tomato are very fresh and tasty. No "love in the burgers"???? Whatever that means, they're cooked to order, and the meat quality/flavor/experience is >> the In-n-Out burger. In my general experience, 5 Guys followed by In-n-Out are the best 'chain'/fast-food burgers I've had. Shack, Burger Joint, and some others beat all of these because of the meat itself.

"love in a burger"....they wank in the beef?

Mama!!! i see your white sauce phobia!
