Thanks SP. I've always wondered about the InO hype :)
-
Not sure why folks try to compare the two burgers. SS clearly positions itself in the 'gourmet' category, with the Pat LaFrieda beef and all that jazz.
InO is clearly a fast food restaurant, that happens to put out a superior quality product compared to their peers (ie. McDonalds, Wendy's, etc).
Comparing the two institutions is like comparing Wal*Mart to Macy's, or Bank of America to Morgan Stanley. They're both arguably successful in their own right, but are in completely different marketplaces.

I've eaten at In-N-Out about fifteen times over the last couple of years, and I love their burgers. They aren't prepared the same as a Shackburger or Burger Joint burger, so I don't really understand the comparisons, but it's a very, very good fast food burger, better than any but the Five Guys burger in that category (though half the 5G price).
I believe a 2x2 is about the same size as a shackburger, though. And the lines are a whole lot shorter.

Agreed sp

I guess I don't understand the comparison either. But I've seen it many times`

[oops--cat posted before I was finished!]
Anyway, I've seen the comparison many times and also don't understand it now that I've had an InO burger. I often see comments like "Forget about Shake Shack, InO burgers are amazing!" etc. Dave--the size may be similar (although I always get a Shack Stack) but the meat is very different, with InO being well-cooked all the way thru like a common fast-food burger, maybe not quite as dry. But I also agree that 5 Guys burger quality is better than InO. The burger itself is tastier and juicier. Been enjoying 5 Guys since around 1990, and they are in an in-between category slightly above "fast food."

In-N-Out is the best-known burger exclusively in the West, and certainly the most talked-about, so I guess if these people feel the need to compare East Coast offerings to something from the wrong coast, they settle on that.
You can compare it to, say, a Blue 9 burger (I&O is much better) since that place says it's doing a West Coast style hamburger, but not Shake Shack or Burger Joint.
-
perhaps I shall just say that All-American (On long Island) is better then In and Out and Shake Shack. When was the last time you saw either mentioned on those shows on TV that rate best burger places. All-American is mentioned almost every time and is pretty much the same thing as both places.
Comparing fast food burgers.... nothing new.
How about Sonic Vs In and Out instead and Shake Shack Vs All-American instead to compare more regionalcentric competition.
-
It's all irrelevant, as long as any beef has "USDA ASSURED" stencilled on it....it will be wank.
Wanna good Burger america?....go to France.

MAD COW!!!!

You shouldn't compare the two, one is a hyped up gourmet, fancy pants burger -Shake Shack- with fancy beef and extremely over priced. Not to say I don't like SShack.
-
Shake Shack = fancy pants? Huh? For startes it comes in a little paper envelope...
All-american - tried the place this summer. Got a dog and a burger. Horrible. Just really terrible. Nothing like a partially steamed dog shoved into a paper tube, along with it's soggy, horrible bun. Blech. The burger was a non-descript similarity.
The cool 50's stanless steel building had me excited. The 'food' it expelled left me less than thrilled. I shoulda just headed next door for ice cream, which I have heard is pretty good.

In and out has no clothes!

I know it's slightly out of ML boundaries (by thousands of miles!) but there's been sporadic talk of the virtues of In-n-Out burgers here and on other blogs, where they're described as being the "West Coast's [superior] answer to Shake Shack or Burger Joint," etc.
Well, I finally had an InO burger a few days ago (2x2, animal style). It's clearly a great fast food burger, fresh and tasty and well worth $3.50 or so when comparing to NYC burger prices. Better than a Shack burger? Not even in the same league.
The InO burger patties are very thin, cooked all the way thru, with a generic fast-food texture and taste. OTOH, burgers from places like the Shack/BJ have thick, juicy patties where the meat flavor stands out. Not the same at all. My curiosity is satisfied--not an InO fanatic.
