Bubble Tea

I've been wanting to try Bubble Tea. It's a summer beverage no? Anyone know where to get a good Bubble Tea around midtown? Preferably midtown east.

Ha, that's a tall task. Asking for good bubble tea in midtown...

the cafe/souvenir shop across from the ESB has bubble tea. not sure how good it is.

  3. Ok so in general, aside from Chinatown, where can I get some good Bubble Tea in Manhattan?

  4. If you've never had it before, don't go to some random place. Bad bubble tea can be really gross, and you'll have the wrong idea of what it's supposed to be. For the first time, definitely try a trusted chain joint like Quickly. (Yes, you will have to go to Chinatown.) Once you've had the real thing, then you can go on bubble tea adventures in midtown. Then let us know how it is.

  5. Quickly is not really good. Try Ten Ren, it is a little more expensive though.

Yeah, there's a Fay Da at 257 West 34th St. near 8th Ave. I've never gotten tea there, though.

I love Quickly but I can't speak to the quality of their bubbles, just their tea. I don't get bubbles in my tea there. I'm just not a bubbly kind of guy. They have great green iced tea -- I always go in and say, "iced green tea, no bubbles." (Sometimes they look at me a little funny and ask again to make sure they heard me right -- "no bubbles?") The new Quickly location at Forsyth & Division, which replaced the mysteriously short-lived bing joint, is across the street from Xi'an Famous Foods, so I can get a green tea with my Savory Cumin Lamb Hand-Pulled Noodles.

  8. Of course, Fay Da! I'm willing to bet that Fay Da has the best bubble tea in all of midtown, despite the fact that I've never even had bubble tea in midtown.

@viktor: Quickly may not be everyone's favorite, but it's at least a safe middle-of-the-road choice. Ten Ren is also a safe chain choice. I just wanted to warn against random shitty bubble tea places.

  9. I like Ten Ren because the tea quality really stands out amongst the others. I ask the clerk "not too sweet" so I can enjoy the tea taste. Most of the bakeries in chinatown are pretty much standard. I sampled the yogurt bubbles the other day at Teariffic on Mott St. My wife likes it, but I am not a big fan.

I've had the Passion Fruit tea with coconut jelly (instead of tapioca pearls) from Fay Da and it was just what I needed on a hot day. Not that cheap ($4 for a regular size), but not bad for Midtown.

  11. With Quickly, if you get a VIP card, all drinks are 20%. No discounts with Ten Ren.

Personally, Ten Ren has better tea flavor. Their bubbles are also very aromatic and cooked to perfection.

Quickly, you can have the bubbles with any drink, even the slush. Though I wouldn't recommend it since it makes the bubbles hard. The flavor of the tea isn't as great but it can be better on certain days and on certain days, it's more like milk with a hint of tea flavor.

There's also a fro-yo place called Crazy Bananas, which also has bubble tea, on 32nd between 5th and Madison. Anybody tried the tea?
