Brooklyn Jury Duty Lunch!

Sarah

Waaaaaaayyyyy out of bounds for a Midtown Lunch, but I've been called to do my civic duty tomorrow in Brooklyn-- anyone got lunch suggestions around Borough Hall? I assume I won't get a *ton* of time for lunch, and you get extra gold stars if you remember that I don't eat meats!

Falafel carts are nearby. Or, Perelandra at 175 Remsen (half a block away) might be the best bet. Garden of Eden (180 Montague, a block away) is another option. Be adventurous and try Vegetarian Ginger (128 Montague, 2 blocks away).

not sure if the farmers market is still out there in the winter but when i went for jury duty it was in full swing and i picked up some fresh fruit juice and pastries for under $7. made a great little lunch.

Ghang! it's a thai place that just relocated so everything inside is spic and span. they have a very awesome pumpkin curry if you like spicy. tofu is available as one of the proteins for pretty much anything on their menu. just request that they don't use fish sauce.

At VG, the hot'n'sour soup is a good option, esp. in this cold weather! (Even meat-eaters like it.) Can't go wrong with Gen. Tso's (but that's just me). Haven't had the sesame seitan.

Sarah, do your taste buds a huge favor and after you get out of Duty, stop by Sahadi's, bring a back pack! Hummus, nuts, coffee, amazing falafal, cheeses... oh dear it's good!

So weird, someone just sent me that link to Sahadi's because I asked where can I buy tahini.

Sahadi's is the bomb-diggity! Lots of people have reviewed it to, NYT-NYMag etc..
Unfortunately, They don't prepare food (except for rare instances like a street fare) But their falafal balls are super green on the inside, brown and crispy on the outside.

Mamacita, I'm *totally* planning on going to Sahadis when I get out b/c I need harissa like nobody's business so I can make this soup (from my friend Fran's blog)

My last Jury Duty allowed longer lunch breaks than I expected, about an hour and a half if I recall correctly. Plenty of time to even head to Smith Street, if you're up for a minor schlep. (~8 minute walk)

If you go that way, there's a Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwich shop on Atlantic, just over there.

That said, just down Montague, you've got plenty of options, including Five Guys.

About a block further, there's a place called Lassen and Hennig's that I used to go to when I went to High School in the neighborhood. It's got some great custom sandwiches that I get whenever I can. The downside? No indoor seating. So, unless you like eating in the cold, it's back to the courthouse...
