If you have a car: Kelly's Roast Beef. There's one on Rt 16 IIRC, just off of 93. For the real experience, go to Revere. Not like there's any other reason to be there.
-
If you like Banh mi, take the red line to Savin Hill, walk 2 blocks to Dorchester Ave. Many Vietnamese shops there with REALLY GOOD banh mi sandwiches (on great crusty bread, the real deal) and they'll set you back less than $3. Puts all of the NYC 'authentic' offerings to shame.
For great wings cheap (15 cents), hit up Whiskey's Smokehouse on Boylston by Fairfield (across from the Prudential Center, by the Convention Center). Available at the bar until 11 pm (only 'til 4 on Fri-Sat). The No Name restaurant still has great seafood. (On the waterfront in Southie)
And for a sub that will knock your socks off, try Al's State Street Cafe, on State St. (duh) right behind Fanueil Hall. Any sub with chicken (medallions) is awesome, like the pesto, and the chicken salad is also killer. Served on huge crusty rolls.

I used to go to school there. Haven't been back in maybe 7 years? But I do remember some spots that I really liked as a college student: Anna's Taqueria (various locations but I used to go to the one on Beacon St), Sunset Grill and Tap (Brighton Ave) for lots of beer choices and tex mex bar food, and Brown Sugar (Thai) on Commonwealth Ave.
-
i went there for a weekend and i never even knew anna's taqueria was a chain. i just saw one across the street from the hotel i stayed at and i couldn't resist. they use a DELICIOUS tortilla with a nice snap to it, not like the crumbly stuff you get at tacobell or that sticky stuff you get at chipotle. also pleasant, albeit gritty, was the almond milk.
I also have to put in a plug for Zaftig's. Awesome Jewish style deli. Forgot the area but I remember taking the Green T (Light Rail).
if you're big on food network stuff, you can hit up Flour Bakery (pretty remote from beacon) in the morning for some 'award winning' sticky buns, or Eagle's Deli for massive hamburgers. (Also via Light Rail but further west)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm definitely going to hit up No Name, because I want me some New England chowder in New England. Everyone on Yelp hated it, but Yelp is nothing but criticism for the sake of textual-masturbation.
-
Aleqz: Yelp has nothing on Chowhound, although CH is just as fixated on name-dropping and one-upmanship as on contrarian criticism.
BTW, I third Anna's--very tasty! OK, we're not in San Francisco or even near the Left Coast, but why can't we even get something as good as Anna's in NYC? The almond drink is tasty, and gritty. Great when the weather is warm!!
-
Oh Dean, I second Zaftig! I forgot about that place. I think it's in Coolidge Corner.
-
For insanity (MASSIVE burgers) check out Eagles Deli on Beacon Street at Cleveland Circle (green line). Have heard mixed reviews since their recent renovation (too clean/Chipotle-like) but they still have good sandwiches and burger challenges. (Try the Nick Lachey, 1.5 lbs of burger, 6 slices swiss, 6 pc bacon, 1/2 lb fries and a soda for $15; the other challenges are bigger!)

Anna's is money. First place I ever developed a go-to order (carnitas quesadilla). Quality started dropping around the end of my time there, though ('06-07). Major bummer.
-
seal, they have more than one location so the quality issue is sort of moot.
i like how Aleqz asked for suggestions but then ended up choosing something completely different.
this is a yelp review in a nutshell:
hi. i was here too. the waiter was very mean to us [this is where you click useful]. i mean, WTF? and then he *ACTUALLY* scoffed at us and gave us THE HAND. What is this the 80's? [this is where you click funny] Is Mr. Mister looping in your head? [this is where you click cool]. they get one star for something unrelated to the food and/or cleanliness of the restaurant, like the tablecloth was pink or the cooks are all clothed.
pros: THE MEAL ENDED!!!! LOLOLOOLOL
cons: EVERYTHING :( rueened mai birfday parteeOn a CH-esque note, Sara Jenkins (of PorchettaNYC) is following me on twitter!! Win.

I know it's a chain, but the one by my school is all that mattered to me. I used to go do martial arts a block up from the local one, and after a class of tai chi, the natural thing to do is get a quesadilla. It builds chi.
I didn't know what yelp was until a year or two ago. I have continued ignoring it.
-
Quesadillas build chi. There's a reason I read the interwebs. Always learn something new! ;^)

--Different than what? He just asked for good food recs. And he may eat more than one meal while in town. -
Galleria Umberto for a sicilian slice
I know, I know - you're from NYC, and so no pizza in Boston could possibly measure up.
and yet.......yeah, go to Galleria Umberto. Not a fancy place, despite the fancy name

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm taking a mid-week jaunt up north, and I want to find the good stuff.
