St Dymphna's in the EV makes an excellent shepard's pie
-
Is Telephone Bar and Grill still around? (2nd ave around 9th street). I used to go there in the 90's, and they alsways had great Shepard's Pie.
-
It's made with lamb or mutton....clue's in the name.....use beef its COTTAGE pie.
Colonials.
-
Thanks Rudy. I wish people would realize that in the states. I get crosseyed looks when I mention this (I thought the 'shepard' made that obvious).
-
Blame all the crappy Irish bars in the US for that one. I had no idea... in fact, on my flight back from the UK, cottage pie was one of the choices and I had no idea what they were talking about. The flight attendant said "it's like Shepherd's Pie")

gordon ramsay's always talking about how great his version is. how come it's not at the london?
and cottage pie and shepherd's pie should remain interchangeable. it's not important enough of a difference to call for distinguishment.
"cottage" is being used in the sense of 'base,' 'rural,' or 'peasant.' like "cottage" cheese. it boils down to being a more romantic moniker for "inexpensive pie."

ok deanlo..... we'll use tuna...and call it Flipper pie...just to keep you happy.
Tuh.
right is RIGHT.

Landmark Tavern on 46th & 11th has the BEST!
-
Rudy, you joke, but the idea of a tuna-casserole-ish filling with a potato crust sounds pretty awesome.
-
Sorry - no place on earth beats my mother's cottage OR shepard's pie. *sigh*

@adamprato: funny that a tuna pie sort of came up. I did just the exact thing in making use of pantry food a few nights ago.
1-can of tuna
1- can progresso NE clam chowder
1/2 bag of egg noodles
enough peas, spinach, corn, red/green pepper to add color and texture
some random spicesboil the noodles and set aside. saute the vegetables and tuna in a pan with some butter and OO. set aside
combine everything (soup, noodles, tuna, vegetables, etc) in a pot and simmer for a bit. add in what ever spices you think go into it. (i used old bay seasoning, paprika, black pepper and a little cayenne)
dump the whole mess into a buttered cassarole dish.
if it looks too watery, add some flour.
top with crushed up oyster crackers and shredded cheddar. drizzle on some OO to help brown it up
bake for about 15-20 minutes or until nice and crusty
I was surprised at how this came out as was my wife. usually pantry based dishes are not as well received. :)

this was a VERY informative post! i have a few recipes to try now...
-
1 can of tuna for 2 people? :) and for a half bag of noodles?? :)
Sure, the serving size of a can of tuna is "3oz", but thats still only what, 150 calories?
-
it was pretty damn filling. you would be surprised. but you can , always double or triple the ingredients. there was no major science behind this. It was just what I had on hand...
the whole mess filled an 8x8 cassarole dish past half way before i put on the crust.
-
and add pickles if you are hungrier.....
-
"There's something fishy about these pies..."
-
Yeah NoPickles, AddPickles.
-
adding nopickles would make you all cannibals :)
-
I didn't think this warranted its own thread, but I was wondering Rudy's opinion on this

Yvo, seen that(think it was on supersizedmeals.com).
Opinion?....nomnomnomnomnomnomnonmonomnom.

I have an ongoing joke with my wife (who claims to hate Irish food). Every time we walk past an Irish pub or restaurant I say something like -- "Oh, Blarney Stone -- I heard they were rated one of the top ten shepard's pies in the cities."
While the notion of mashed potatoes on top of meat and veggies doesn't do it for my wife, I really love the dish. Any suggestions on where one might find a great shepard's pie here in New York?
