I haven't tried it, but Balcones del Peru (on Vine, near Sunset) is supposed to be really good. Jonathan Gold raved about a place in the Mercado del Paloma near USC called Mo Chica, and Los Angeles magazine put it on their top ten list for best new restaurants from 2009. Both of these places are known more for their ceviches.
There are a few places in the South Bay--one of the remaining El Pollo Inkas, and a place in Gardena called El Rocoto--that are more meat and saltado. I like El Rocoto, but it's not really a lunch spot.

So... during my first stint in L.A. I was a huge fan of Mario's Peruvian. Love the saltado with mariscos. But since then I've heard there are far better places. What are these magical other places called? And where can I find them?
