Price is not a major consideration unless it's like $50+ then I don't care to hear about it.
-
Burger Joint for a cheaper burger.
21 Club for a ridiculously expensive burger ($30)
That said, I haven't tried the Bouley burger so
I can't say 21 Club has the best expensive burger.
It's just really good. and almost worth that $30. -
Molly's on 3rd Ave has a great pub (fat) burger. I still intend to try the burger at Luger's.
For regular-sized burgers that are juicy and tasty, I would go with Shake Shack and Burger Joint. 5 Guys isn't bad, but not up to the level of these two.
-
Yvo=== Our hidden Gem of a pub Dirty Pierres... Especially on Sunday for the $6.00 burger...
-
Meh, saw the spanking and closure on the other thread. I'll ban myself now. Adios all, it's been real.
-
Excellent suggestions, this is all great guys. Keep 'em coming!!! Thanks!
-
Donovan's in Woodside still makes one of my favorite burgers in the city. (Pub style)
-
Yeah, I too am a fan of the good ole pub burger. Nothing too fancy. When I need a burger, I just go to Judge Roy Bean.
-
Shake Shack..
of course, i hate waiting in line so i usually will opt for waterfront ale house (i live right by there) .. or five guys (close to work)
-
I'm seconding flatrock on Donovan's. If you love the flat SS-style burgers, probably not for you. The bun melts into the patty. But it's delicious meat, rare (when you order it that way) on the inside and charred on the outside, juicy as hell... and you *never* have to wait for a table (since the place is gigantic), let alone wait on a line. :)

Donovan's is the Irish pub yes? Very close to the train station, nightly bar fights?
-
Only when Stevenp and Christopher from Rock Center are both there! Yeah, Irish Pub close to the train (get the stuffed clams as an app).
-
For pub style, my favorites are:
Blue Smoke - same taste as shake shack but in a pub style. Good salty crust, beefy flavor
Primehouse - a surprise contender. Made with dry aged steak trimmings. Nice and beefy and mineral tang of dry aged steak. A steal at $12 at the bar.
Michael Jordans - my favorite of the steakhouse burgers. Dry aged steak, salty crispy crust. About $15 at the bar during lunch.Slightly beneath those are
Stand - good, well seasoned. Top it off with a toasted marshmallow shake.
Waterfront - I'm pretty sure they use 100% sirloin, you can taste it. Always well cooked. The buffalo burger from their specials board is great too. -
Del Frisco's lunch burger is amazing. It's huge and cooked perfectly, great roll. About $15 during lunch, love it with monterey jack. It comes with chips that resemble those kettle cooked ones you get in stores, but they'll replace those with mashed potatoes (the ones that come with the filet tips deal posted on here) if you ask. Plus you'll also get their amazing bread/butter as you wait.
JG Melon for a more traditional pub burger.
-
The burger at Dumont (brooklyn) was very good. It's a big pub style burger. It's about $12-$15 and comes with lots of shoe string fries.
-
Black Iron Burger: very tasty, good size, decent price. But my favorites are Shake Shack and Dumont for the two different versions that aren't Peter Luger.
Paul's on 2nd Ave, near 8th St. seems to get overlooked but it's one of the better burgers in the city. They slap the flattened ball on the grill, then cover it with a bowl and barely touch it till it's done. Fries are no good there, but you can go down a couple storefronts to the Pommes Frites for those.
-
Agree with Paul's. Don't know why it's so overlooked either.
Paul's is what I'd call a normal West Coast burger, and reminds me of what you run into more often out there at a greasy spoon. But then I grew up calling In n'Out a fast food burger so maybe my perspective is skewed.
-
Shopsin's makes great sliders for $10 ($13 with fries). I like the burgers at Royale on Ave. C, but I'm Shake Shack guy first.
-
Tried city burger today. It was good, not great. Meat was very similar to shake shack(I think I might have read they use the same kind?) but the burger wasn't as good overall, and I've only had a shack burger at citi field. It was slightly bigger than shack though. I still need to try the black label burger.

I'm dying to try Peter Luger's .. Burger Joint reigns supreme in midtown.
-
In spit eof my better judgment I just had the Kobe Beef Burger at Del Frisco's for the sake of novelty. If it was Kobe Beef, it was certainly a waste of it.
-
A peter Luger's burger? I could just imagine a PL "Bacon Cheese Burger" with PL's thick cut bacon... unga
-
this is a super fancy $32 burger -- but it's seriously delicious -- copied from the menu of db bistro moderne, daniel boulud's place near times square
THE ORIGINAL db BURGER
Sirloin Filled with Braised Short Ribs & Foie Gras
Served on a Parmesan Bun
Pommes Frites or Pommes Soufflées -
had the "black label" at city burger today. Never had anything like it. It was very good, but not sure if I would pay double the price of a regular burger very often, its more of a "once in a while" kind of thing for sure.
Got it medium rare and there was a nice char on it, but it was a bit overcooked inside. I only got cheese on it, but I don't remember really tasting it. What I did taste was something that tasted 1 part hamburger and 3 parts porterhouse. It was nothing like any burger I've had before, though I haven't had anything more expensive than a houston's burger.
Came to about $20 with fries and a drink. Next time I'll skip the fries which were very generic and not very good
-
@reg - if you like the hockey puck that they serve at City Burger then I would suggest Burger Joint, Carnegie John's (CJ) and even Five Guys for a better burger at half the price (or a quarter for CJ)
-
ahh i see Pauls is already mentioned... I don't have any other place o add, Pauls is a good place. they serve beef tartar with raw egg and capers.
-
I think the Shake Shack smaller burger is the best burger I've had in NYC. It's my favorite because the burger is cooked with good blend of beef, perfectly cooked and still super juicy. The bun fits the burger and there isn't too much extra on it. The tomato and lettuce are perfect and high quality. It alwsy seems so perfect and fresh that it should be and could be a icon of burger for any burger joint.
-
win, you can't even compare five guys to city burger. I'd take five guys over the regular city burger, but the black label is a completely different animal. It really doesn't taste like any "normal" burger. I'd love to try those other places you mentioned but they are a bit of a walk from 40th btw 7th and 8th where I work.
Like I said, definitely not an every day kind of thing, but its a nice change up and tastes really good
-
Random update: I had the burger at Donovan's, which was actually quite good - the meat was seasoned nicely(which is a big issue I find at some of these places that are all about toppings). But the fries, what's up with those crapsticks? At my dining companion's insistence (he'd been there before), we also got wings, and he got soup (on a really muggy disgusting day, no less, but he said it was THAT good?).
I didn't manage to get the clams... Are they worth a trip back? (It's not that far from me, to be honest, though it's not near anywhere else I'd need or want to go.)
-
"crapsticks" lol
-
have you checked out this website?
-
Right now, it's Citi's Double Shakeburger and Five Guys. Hopefully I'll get to run into other tasty burgers soon.

I realize this topic can be exhausted ad nauseum, but I'm researching an upcoming project for my blog and would really like some opinions on what is the best burger in NYC (five boroughs only). Please also mention whether it's slider style (smaller burgers) or pub style (monster style), and if you can - why you think it's the best or one of the best.
Thanks in advance :)
