The bar at the Modern is supposed to be fabulous.
I enjoyed Pazza Notte when I went a year-ish ago after a Target Free Friday night date at the MoMA :)
-
Also, what's the deal with McCormick & Schmick's? Is the happy hour worth it?
-
I usually go to the MOMA every Friday. Afterwards, I usually hit up the bar at the Modern for a whiskey if it's cold outside. But it's definitely a pricey place to get a drink. It's worth it if you are on a date or want to impress people though. Another spot for a drink is Bill's Gay Nineties (54th btw Mad and Park). One of the speakeasy bars that still exist in the city. They serve food there, too.
The McCormick & Schmick's deal is really awesome. They do it at two times: 5-6 and 930-1030. But I think it varies so call ahead.
But you can also grab a nice bowl of soup from Sapporo (49th btw 6th and 7th) or Hagi (right next door to Sapporo) for some nice warm sake. Those are the usual places that I go to dull the pain of stimulating brain cells.

In that area I'd consider:
*Judge Roy Bean (56th btw 5th & 6th)
Whisky Trader (55th btw 5th & 6th)
Cassidy's (55th btw 5th & 6th)
DJ Reynolds (57th & btw 8th and 9th)*On Monday/Tuesday, it's not too crowded, so you can actually go with a few people. Otherwise, 1 person is too large a group to go there.

Thank you guys!
mghu777, do you think Hagi gets as expensive as Totto can? I basically want to go for izikayah every single day, but have to control the budget.
I also work RIGHT next to Bill's but have never gone in. It seems like a great rainy-day kind of place.
-
That's the deceptive lure of izakayas, those sultry sirens. Their menus promise you cheap drinks and a wide variety of good Japanese bar food. But if you don't navigate your way carefully, they can leave you poor, drunk, and feeling somewhat violated. $10 pitchers ain't bad though. My defaults at these places are the agedashi tofu and the grilled squid. I usually get a filler like some rice balls or some udon, too. Izakayas in midtown are definitely more expensive than others, but it beats waiting over an hour to get into Kenka sometimes. The best part of this one is that they take your cell number and call you when a table pops up. So when I have a long wait, I usually hop on over to another go to place of mine at Playwrights for a pint or two.
Bill's is definitely an interesting spot. You are right about the rainy day atmosphere. It's definitely filled with old-timers and regulars. Bring cash. But it's great to see all the pictures of all these old boxers and jockeys. The original owner used to be both back in his time. The world's tiniest boxer.

Ooh, I <3 Kenka! Cotton candy machine outside that homeless people wandering by like to stick their fingers in and eat loose cotton candy... ahem.
Just out of innocent curiosity and NO creepiness intended whatsoever, do you people have any idea how easy you make it to stalk you? Even without a photograph, there's the location of your offices, mentions here and there of the type of work you do, usernames you've repeated all over the internet... I'm jus sayin'
On-topic, though, Hagi wasn't that bad, we had 5 people and I think we spent $15-20 a piece. I agree you have to watch what you order obviously though...
-
Kenka isn't around MoMa though. I foolishly ate most of the sugared powder meant for the cotton candy the last time I went. LOL. All in good fun.
I know I don't make it easy to get stalked plus who really cares to stalk me since StreetMeas is only here plus I have no facebook and no mypsace. And I'm not a hot asian girl. Why bother me? LOL. Better safe than sorry for the ladies of course.
On topic, Menchenko Tei is decent ramen. And if you don't mind the cold (most people will), 53/6th Halal Guys is right there. HAHA. Five Guys Burger. For bar, I would head towards 3rd Ave.

Well, I'm just going to put it out there that I have been extremely bored and put my skills to the test in the past. With limited information, I was able to find photographs of certain MLers and lots of information on where they hang out, what they like to eat (duh), and where I might find that person. Not out of actual interest before anyone freaks out.
(And some MLers have found me/my personal account on FB, so I'm sure they know way more about me than they ever wanted to know!)
So you don't have to be a hot Asian girl for someone to want to find you... or even hot. Or a girl. Or ASIAN. Hahaha
Have fun tonight, Shivery!

Way to not creep us out, Yvo ;)
All good. Again, better safe than sorry.Wonder how Zach feels about his wave after wave of stalkers/ aggressive fans then?
-
Yeah it's pretty easy to figure out people's habits around here. Everyone's usually pretty quick to comment "Oh this is my work" or "Oh I live around there" to preface their street meat cred in that area. That's why it's pretty easy for certain trolls that will not be named can get pretty creative on these blogs and sites. But thankfully I usually keep different usernames for different interests.
However, like StreetMea, I am not a hot girl. Nor do I have a blog. But I am asian. I think the first two are enough to warrant an internet fan base, willingly elicited or not. People just got to keep the creepiness level down. Take your meds, people.
Anyway, Shivery, how was the night? Did you enjoy the Tim Burton Exhibit? More importantly, where and what did you eat?
-
The night was great! Only got to check out the Tim Burton exhibit (which is awesome) very briefly, as we were there to see a special screening of Fantastic Mr. Fox with a Wes Anderson Q&A. The bf is a complete nerd fanboy for every single one of his movies. It was a blast.
Our friends had never been to Menchanko-Tei, so we ended up there for some ramen. I had the spicy miso menchanko. I have never had anything there I didn't love.
Additionally, I will be purchasing some pepper spray at lunch at an undisclosed location. Anyone who wants to come watch me buy pepper spray is out of luck.
-
Is there a separate admission for the Tim Burton exhibit? I'm debating going to see it... thanks :)
Sounds yummy and sorry, I didn't mean to be creepy about it... it's more like, these are the things I personally think about when I post things like "I WORK RIGHT NEAR THERE" and then spend 5 minutes staring at that without hitting submit, then delete it, and wonder if I'm being too paranoid.
Let me just put it this way, I occasionally (often) have way too much time on my hands and if it occurs to me while I'm bored, I will amuse myself figuring out MLers' real names and/or what company employs them. It's easier than you'd think, and I have no end-goal for the information I find (actually I usually immediately forget it anyway). It's not like I'm doing it out of malice... just sheer boredom.
(Are you sure you still want to meet me for real at a happy hour? HAHAHA...)

Hey dudes. Going to a show at the MoMA tonight at 8 with a few friends. Was thinking of what we can grab to eat nearby beforehand and got stumped. I've got Menchenko Tei and the new Katsuhama in mind, but anything good up there for food and drinks that I haven't thought of?
