@BenBen, to be fair, a lot of people like this place also just in case you don't enjoy the BMS on Mott St.

@EL Dub, I like their roll too.

One of my best friend's gf is Viet. Her mom uses similar rolls when making banh mi at home. Not those fancy-shmancy french baguettes (which is a good bread in itself) plus banh mi is Vietnamese. Who cares what bread they adapt to, french or not? I prefer the thicker roll. I even saw frnehc tourists eating BMS banh mi outside their store. lol. If BMS dare use a traditional baguette, then it better a whole 2-3ft long (at least). HAHAHA.

    french tourists^

TC, thanks for the info about the tourists and BF's GF's mom using non-torpedo type rolls. Also, I agree 100% with your point about BMS using traditional baguette, that thing better at least two to three times as long as the roll they use now!

Having gone to the banh mi places now I just want to say that I fall on the side of not liking BMS's bread. The crispness of Paris's bread just gets me. Also, banh mi is a direct result - some of the original fusion cuisine - of French rule in Vietnam, so using their bread is just a result of what was available to them at the time (I assume).

But BMS banh mi is huge and cheap.

For those in brooklyn, Pork Chop Express (one of my favorite sites other then ML of course)
Devoted a lot of work into checking out Banh mi in Brooklyn's chinatown and more. See the index on the right hand side for all the posts. I love this man. He also took on a whole lotta Polish food action that was a fun read. Man loves his meat.

Thanks Api! Roundup/final thoughts post goes live at 2:30 :)

Mamacita - actually, it's partially because of PCE that I went to the place I posted about today; he recommended it highly and gave it high ranks. I was incredibly, incredibly disappointed, despite his post being about 3 years old, that what he got and what I got differed so greatly. I mean, it was AWFUL.

FYI I wasn't into the Saigon Bakery Banh Mi at all. It sorta grossed me out.

    Did you try Paris?

If you're looking for a banh mi in Brooklyn, the Nicky's on Atlantic is pretty phenomenal. There's also a place on 8th ave in Sunset Park that is supposed to be out of this world.

there's also a nicky's in the east village. not chinatown prices but still pretty good. i like the grilled pork chop banh mi from there. oh, and the seaweed chips.

nor thanh da. or the late an dong.

i'm going to have to second (or is it 102nd?) that nom for BMS because they have the best pate and the best nem nuong for their banh mi thit nguoi. i haven't been to the new location yet but will make a stop to see if it's still the same.

baoguette at stmarks sucks. the bread is terrible there. best ever banh mi is at this street market i went to 6 years ago in Da Lat, VN. Do you dare? or you can hunt down that place tony bourdain went to (with the fried egg and like every land animal known to man on it) :)
