I saw similar hygiene issues at the 40th St. one (Labeleca) which is why I won't go back even though the chicken parm was good.
-
I had the same issue with Labeleca and walked out before they took my order.

yeah, when you see something first hand its different than when you just hear about it or have an idea about it... because now you have an image to always remember

I saw the same thing at Labeleca -- I was craving a chicken parm and just as I was about to order, noticed the guy preparing the sandwiches with his bare hands (which looked dirty). I was disgusted and just ate the pizza, which was also handled by employees with bare hands but only on the crust (which I did not eat). In this day and age, why don't they wear gloves? Does the Health Dep't need to make a visit?

If this is the way they handle their food outside, can you imagine how they handle the food inside their kitchen?
-
I cringe when I think how 99% of restaurants handle food out of the customer's sight. Now I'm in the mood for a sandwich from LaBellezza's today.
-
Seriously. That's disgusting. How would they feel if I paid by retrieving money from my drawers.
-
btw, i think most chefs and cooks cook with bare hands, just hoping they wash their hands often.
-
@mkim: I agree that nearly all chefs use their hands when cooking- it's part of cooking. But when the bicycle delivery boys are churning their bare hands through the cheese- I'm out.

La Bellezza is my favorite take-out Italian in Midtown. The food is always great and the people that work there seem like a good bunch. Unfortunately, I probably won't eat there again.
Today, during the lunch rush, I watched as the delivery men came in from their runs, and as they waited for their next orders, would handle the food with their bare, unwashed hands. They went straight from the outside- coats still on- to grabbing bread and chicken cutlets, and sticking their hands into the giant mozzerella cheese bin. It just grossed me out and I left. Yes, I am fully aware that I would be horrified if I saw what went on inside every 4 star kitchen, but this was right in front of my face. It just seemed particularly filthy and brazen to me. It would be difficult for me to return.
