Please define "Sick"?
I've never thrown up, however I have had the shits. Eh, it happens.
-
The first time I had the famous 53rd and 6th guys I had the "hot" shits after asking them to douse the stuff in their hot sauce. Whatever doesn't kill me, only makes my stomach stronger!
-
Several times---I am a glutton for punishment. Though my street meat cart is 28th and madison, out of the midtown lunch range....I once bought a ton of streetmeats and gave them away when I was blackout drunk----it was my 2nd night in my new place in the City...My night doorman loved it!
-
I also got a horrible case of stomach cramps and some mean shits from the 53rd st famous halal cart. I did not use much hot sauce. I feel this was a one-off thing and it wont dissuade me from going back there again. but the pain... I had to bite down on my toothbrush.
-
If you haven't ever had stomach issues from eating at a cart, then you don't eat at carts nearly enough...
-
As usual, Zach says it best...perhaps that is why he leads and we follow.
-
I know I'm jinxing myself but I have never gotten sick but I dont mess with Halal so that might be what saves me. I did however get sick both times I ate at chiptole.
-
I always go back, even after the Shits..... There is a Simpsons Episode where he gets an 8 foot sub that keeps getting older and more decrepit. "Another foot, Marge, and I can fit it in the Fridge". Anyway, the Hoagie makes Homer very sick and he yells at it. Then he apologizes: "I could never be mad at you sandwich". Well, i can never be mad at you cart dudes.
-
Yeah I had to run to the toilet about 30 minutes after eating at Shendy's last week. I'd like to blame it on the extra hot sauce.
Back when I worked at Lincoln Center, I used to get sick every time I ate out on 9th Ave. I thought it was the water.
Didn't bother me too much. I just thought of it as my weekly colonic.

I've gotten diarrhea and stomachaches from street meats. Never anything fatal though. I also experienced the steamy, hot deuce drops from too much hot sauce.
During the winter, I've used the 53rd/6th plate with extra splashes of hot sauce to fight the cold/ flu/ sore throat.
-
The day I got my flu shot, I hadn't eaten breakfast or lunch. I went to 53rd and 6th and had the usual l&c over salad, extra extra hotsauce. I always get this. My coworker went with me. I got sick, he didn't. I'm not sure if it was the flushot or the cart. Considering my coworker didn't get sick, I think it was the flushot.
That said, the worst illness I ever got from eating out was after having a cuban sandwich at The Coffee Shop in Union Square. I was sick for 2 days.

I used to get an upset stomach, but you build strength after a while. It's like a workout. I feel like I've been training for SMAP2 and successfully finished all meals.
-
I never gotten food poisoning from a cart. I have gotten the dreaded red eye from too much hot sauce but thats my fault.
-
Wow, I need to remember to never read this thread while I'm eating.
When I first came to NYC, I ate a kebab at a Times Square vendor. That night, I had severe cramps and threw up. Horrible. One of the worst pain I've experienced.
-
Last year, I got a case of cramps, diarrhea and fever/chills from my regular halal cart in FiDi.
I went back about a week later, told 'em what happened, and they threw in some free falafel on my chicken and rice plate.
-
I'm impressed at the myriad of ways we've been able to come up with phrases for an unpleasant bowel movement.
-
I've never been sick from a cart, but I've had a lifetime of prepping my stomach with gassy beans/chiles/hot sauce/East LA truck food etc. However!!! I've kept this a little secret with Zach and a chosen few, but Daniel's downtown lunch pick -The Sea World on Church gave me Montezuma's revenge. Don't eat the fried oysters there!! For God sakes, DON't BE A HERO!!
There I've said it, sorry Daniel. Still love you man.
-
Mamacita, what about Walgreens's HERO vs. the fried oysters?
I'm not even a big fan of oysters meat (unless it's chinese oyster sauce on an entree/ green veggies). I'll eat those fried oysters AND the "cardboard with white sauce" if it'll help for the road to SMP3. I'm not afraid of hugging any porcelain for the night...says the guy asking to be food poisoned.
-
The guy who keeps asking to join in SMP3 when SMP2 just passed would creep me out a little and I wouldn't invite him... but I'm a girl and people creep me out very frequently. Just saying you might help your chances to stop being so desperate to join ;P
I think it was the 2nd or 3rd time I'd ever eaten street meat. The first time, I lucked out and got a cart that served whole chunks of lamb (in the Financial District, love it), so I thought that's how it always is. The next time I went, that cart had run out of lamb so I went elsewhere, was served something that just LOOKED gross and wrong, and wound up getting sick quickly enough that it looked and smelled the same both ways.
Sorry... writing that just grossed me out all over again.

Hey Yvo, thanks for the input. You're obviously talking about me and it's cool. As a non-blogger and among many faces of ML, I just didn't want to leave it up to a highly-selective/ random annual contest next year. Just trying to strategically place myself...even if it's through bad attention. I'm not desperate to join and definitely nowhere enar the the end of the world if I never get to a SMP. Too passionate abotu street meats perhaps. Oh well. There are many loyal MLers here so my chances of judging are slim anyway so whatever - play the odds and take risks. If anything, I should just start a blog solely based on Street Meats...
-
Hahahahaah... that would guarantee you a spot as a judge I bet. I was teasing you though.

I stand by the statement that there is no such thing as bad or negative attention. It is an Oxymoron. Attention=Good. Even by randomly posting a link to multiple euphemisms for Bowel Movements.

Just curious.
