The Biriyani cart at 46th /Sixth Ave is a great place.
It has become our staple. Try their "combo kabab over rice" ... ofcourse you always have their Biryani ! -
I haven't tried the Biryani cart (I almost did a few weeks ago) yet! I know, I know, I'm lame.
Btw, have you guys seen the ML sponsor stickers on the sides of the 53rd and 6th Halal Guys carts? Pretty awesome!

So what else, guys???

1.75 cent slices from naples 45.
2 slices r sufficiently filling if you dont plan on napping after lunch. -
ooh! 45th and what?
-
45th and park...met life building...
its only after 2pm but the pizza is just as delicious.

I don't think that it's too hard to get a filling meal for under $5. One big rule is not buy anything to drink. Ever. Only get it when it comes with the meal. If anything always ask for water. It's always free b/c it's NYC law. Best place for free water is Starbucks.
For $5 or less meals:
- Whole Foods: Go to the hot bar and you can get a vegetable, meat, and starch all for under $5. You might be able to sneak a piece of fruit from the produce section. The thing is that you have to carefully monitor how much they are putting into your small containers. Don't let them pack it up and be mindful of what is heavier and lighter. You can get a good helping of mac and cheese for about $1 and some change. If you get a piece of bread from their bakery section then you won't even need to get a starch. That way you can change it up a bit.
- Chinatown Buffet on Times Square:
Get your meal to go. It's about $5.00+ p/lb. So unless you really need a pound of food you really shouldn't have to spend more than $4.75 here. They claim that they charge extra for seafood, so stick it underneath the cheaper food if needed.-Cafe Zaiya:
They have those $5 meals. In order to avoid the tax making it over $5 skip out on the water.- Fuji bakery:
Get there before 12:30pm and you can still have your pick of Dim Sum leftover from the morning. You can get Sui Mai, shrimp Rice Noodles, and a baked good for under $5.- Jimmy's Burgers:
The small burgers are $2.50 each. You can get 1 burger and a side for under $5. The burger is small, but the side is plenty. Get 2 burgers for $5.00, but after tax it's going to be a little more so take your chance.-The Lunch box on 34th st:
Get 1-2 baked goods plus the single container. You can only get one hot item from the buffet, but with the 1-2 baked bread goods you should feel pretty full.- West Indian restaurant near K-Mart & Penn on 34th st:
Somewhere in that area there's a West Indian restaurant that offers $5 lunch specials. They are smaller than their normal offerings, but they pack as much food into that thing as humanly possible.I can't think of anymore at the moment, but sometimes, one thing you can do is to ask for much less. When you do they will cut down the price a lot. Sometimes. Depending where you go so you will have to check it out for yourself.

Not to double post, but I just remembered. Another great tip is when you do go out and get that $6-9 meal, have it last for about 2 days, 3 max. That way you can revel in the fact that you, literally, spent $2-3 per day for lunch.
This only works where they serve you a LOT of food, of course.

Good point, 5DollarQueen. That's what I've been doing a lot recently. Thanks for all the suggestions too!
Thanks for the st location, Samwich, I do have a lot of late lunches.
Keep 'em coming!!
-
@5DollarQueen, is the West Indian near K-Mart and Penn this place?
The post above says that "small" lunches are 7 to 8 dollars. Please clarify.
-
Does Chinatown count as Midtown? I didn't think so. I've got nothing.

Keep 'em coming, guys!!!

Wilma and I had this for under $5.00, but then again, cost of living is really low here in the stone ages. That said, the cost of repairing the car after the carhop set it down did exceed $5.00

When I went down to NC to see my girlfriend a month ago, we were eating lunch at Bojangles' and talking about the price of lunch here versus back up in NYC (where we went to college together). In her words:
"If you spent more than $5 here, you'd feel guilty. If you spent less than $5 in NYC, you'd feel like you didn't get much at all."
That made me think: can you get a meal in Midtown for $5 or less???
What I have so far:
- Gyro from the 53rd and 6th St. cart ($4)
- Classic American cheese grilled cheese from Burger Heaven ($3.50)
- 1 full dish from either Yip's or Hing Won ($5 tops)
- Fried fish sandwich at Cafe Zaiya ($3.50)
- Burrito from the 50th St. btwn. 6th and 7th Mexican taco and burrito cart ($5)
What else???
