If you're willing to trek to the Upper East Side, I thought the one from Dakshin on 1st Ave between 63rd/64th was pretty hot. I have a decent tolerance for spice but I was in pain the day after.

Two places: Brick Lane Curry House and Brick Lane Curry House II. I've had their vindaloo and their phaal. Both hurt while eating and later when you are paying for it. Just a tip, don't bring back to the office otherwise they'll have to repaint the walls.

Wasn't this covered already, or is this deja vu?
Type "vindaloo" in the search box above.
As for phaal, I tried it over the weekend. I nearly finished it, but with about 1/3rd cup of the sauce left, I decided to dump my rice into the phaal to help with the heat, and all it did was prolong how long it would take me to eat it. At about a half cup of food left, I knew I could finish but another 5 minutes of pain wasn't worth it.
Next time I get talked into the Phaal (I don't expect to, but I'm big and dumb), I'm going to do it plain. No rice or bread (but plenty of lassi). I think that's the key.
Also, contrary to my expectations, I had no issues the next morning, reinforcing my notion that I have a steel lined GI tract.

Yeah, my strategy was quickness. I poured mine all over rice and downed it in 10 mins with a side of sesame naan. I followed it up with plenty of lassi. I don't know if I would call it fun, but I definitely have bragging rights over my friends. One of my friends was taking her sweet time at first till the heat hit her. She gave up after a quarter of her meal. Pfff! Hoosiers don't have half the grit that Texans do.

http://midtownlunch.com/forums/topic/vindaloo was the last place it was discussed.

Thanks for the link to the other thread Adam.
To be honest I wish I could just find that delivered super spicy (I'm outside Brick Lane Too range) but takeout would work too.
update: I just rang them and they're happy to do takeout, hooray!

An indirect result of this thread is my determination to try the Brick Lane lunch buffet in the very near future. Thx!

Have you tried Utsav on 46 & 6th? I have eaten there a few times, and the lamb vindaloo, while not inexpensive, is crazy spicy. I have only ordered it as a separate plate, not at the buffet.

I honestly don't understand why everyone like Brick Lane so much. I'm Pakistani and have been to London plenty of times and there are a lot better restaurants for curry, especially up on Curry Hill (20's and Lex) like Tamba, Dhaaba and Copper Chimney. Please try those and see the difference.
I did try the Phaal and while I realized I could handle the heat, I couldn't handle the taste. It tasted as if someone had put a spoonful of red chilli powder in my mouth instead of a curry. I was using my lassi and raita to wash down the taste rather than the heat. It took me about 25 mins but I could've been done in 15 if it had tasted better.
For good desi food in the area, try either Banjara(?) on the corner of 1st Ave and 6th St or Sigiri (Sri Lankan) a few steps further down from that.

Hi,
Does anyone know where I can get a lamb vindaloo that will blow my head off? All the indian places in Manhattan seem to tone down their vindaloos compared to India and the UK.
I'm in the flatiron/penn station area.
