I work on 52nd/Park. Ben's is a bit out of my range. But I will keep in mind if in that area. Lately I've been getting my "fix" from Juniors at GCT, which is decent and not too expensive (albeit more than the ML $10 limit).

Have you tried Ben's Delicatessen on 38th? I think it's between 7th and 8th aves, and the prices aren't too outrageous. Tons of seating too. They have really good chicken soup, and the corned beef is tasty. The portions are reasonable.

I went down to Toasties today. The place definitely is clean and modern looking. I noticed on what they call the steam table, they had pastrami so I ventured a pastrami sandwich from the "steam table". A few complaints. 1) they sliced it with a knife, not a meat slicing machine - this resulted in overly thick (and fatty slices). 2) despite supposedly being a "steam table", there was no steam and the meat wasn't even warm. The only positive was the rye bread was very fresh thick slice - and tasty. Lots to choose from at Toasties, so I'll likely go back, just not for a pastrami sandwich from the steam table.

Resurrecting this thread. The Toasties East is now open as of yesterday. Very clean, of course, but it doesn't really look like much from the outside. There's a lot of space in the back to sit down and eat, but there's not a whole lot going on in front that looks like it's anything but generi-deli. Anyone willing to take one for the team?

@Dave Agreed, Stage was plentiful and good.

I'll head to the deli on 51st next week and let you know.

There's three things about Stage, though: 1) it's rather good pastrami, 2) there's a ton of it, way too much for one sandwich (and you can thank Carnegie Deli for forcing this issue), and 3) they get the Midtown Tourist markup.

A reasonable amount of pastrami -- say, what a Rosen's would do -- plus cheese might be more the $10 speed. Did you check out the deli on 51st next to Banco Popular?

At Rosen's it was like $7.50 plus $0.75 for the cheese. While not the same quality as Katz's/Stage/etc. it was same kosher style steamed pastrami and did the trick.

I'd say $10 would be reasonable - but 20 bucks was bit much.

Isn't that how much pastrami sandwiches usually are? I seem to recall paying $that much at Katz's or something (and being totally disgusted, but paying anyway)

Finally got around to making the walk over to Stage. While I admit the pastrami was good, and exactly what I was looking for, I was SHOCKED by the $19.45 it cost for the sandwich ($14.95 + $3 extra for cheese + tax). Yikes. I had to forgo the side of fries which would have cost another $6 more.

Wish I had been warned.....

So now still on the look out for a reasonably priced substitute for my Rosen's pastrami sandwich...

Katz's is doable as a "subway" midtown lunch - you can get there on the F train from midtown in 10-15 minutes. Plenty of time to get food and get back again.

Rosen's was never the same when they sold the place a few yrs back.

The Toasties on 48th btwn Mad & 5th has good corned beef and pastrami, but at lunch the place gets so crowded it borders on the claustrophobic. If they keep the old Rosens space, it should be a decent sized deli.
