They do have a Costco in Manhattan now and believe me, I did consider it - $17 for a huge cake. But how to get it to midtown? Those things are big and heavy. The cost for a taxi in addition to the cake, plus the fact that I would need to go twice (can only order in person) ended up ruling that out.

I actually did bring a Costco cake to Manhattan once - I needed a kosher cake to serve a lot of people, and the $15 (at the time) from Costco (some of the bakeries are kosher) and the $35 taxi made the cake $50, where in Manhattan it would be at least $100.

Costco sheet cakes are very reasonable. I know there isn't a Costco in Midtown, but just a suggestion.

I just called. It's not THAT expensive. A 1/4 sheet cake that feeds 25-30 people is ~$80. I was thinking of buying a cake for a friend too.

Thanks to everyone for your responses (well, except maybe Steve LOL). Pigiron - I had been considering Veniero's - they're pretty consistent but was concerned that the delivery charge would be high since they're downtown. Mkim - I took a look at Financier at your suggestion, but the prices are high (same price as Whole Foods, half as much cake) - they looked good though.

Right now I'm leaning towards the whole foods cake, but might end up with Veniero's (cannoli filling...).

Amy's Bread does cakes of various sizes and shapes. My office always gets the red velvet with cream cheese icing. Pricing depends on how many people you need to feed. So call them.

And by the way, Carvel was my 1st choice but they seem to be shutting down at an alarming rate. The one by my apartment closed this past summer [sob].

I just went through this with my son'd 1st birthday party. I researched every bakery in the city. The few mom&pop shops that are left charge too much and have spotty reviews. The fancy bakerys (Buttercup, Magnolia, Cupcake Cafe, etc) are expensive beyond reason. The supermarket bake shops are just plain filthy.

The answer: Veniero's. It's a bit old fashioned, and not a super-premium product, but they are very professional, the prices are (realtively) reasonable, and they offer a decent variety of fillings and toppings. We got a yellow cake with chocolate cannoli filling and it went over very well.

Associated Grocery Store does them - the frosting is a little too sweet, but its a pretty standard sheet cake. They sell them by 1/2 sheets, which usually feeds around 50-60 in my office. Not sure about the cost.

Does the Fay Da on 34th do cakes? It won't be too sweet either so you can totally gorge on other goodies.
