Has anyone been the place across the street from Hill Country called Hog Pit? Totally forgot to mention it earlier, it's kind of hidden underneath scaffolding across the way on 26th St. The only reason I remembered it now was because today's profiled luncher mentioned a few places nearby.

I hit RUB last night, since I don't think I will bear the Madison Square Park mayhem that will ensue this weekend. I got lots of extra pulled pork and brisket to take home for the weekend. Good stuff! Not sure whether I like it as much as Hill Country, but last night, it definitely was comparable. Perhaps the rainyness holds true, b/c there is an extra nice smokiness to the meat.

I've been informed by BBQ afficionados that it is best to get BBQ on rainy days. It has been rainy for a while now so lots of good smoking days. Something about the moisture level in the meat remaining high and the smoke really penetrating.... or something

The reason the sausage is so good at Hill COuntry is it's shipped from Kreutz's in Lockhart, just outside of Austin. It's one of the top 5 BBQ places in Texas, and probably has the best sausage next to Louis Mueller's (which also has an awesome chipotle sausage).

If you want Texas-style BBQ HC is about the only place you can get it in NYC, and would be about average back in Texas. I think they actually try and do too much there with so many meats and sides. It's generally agreed that their pit is a few years off.

Someone else mentioned Fette Sau as the only place you could get good BBQ. In case you dismissed that ridiculous statement out of hand, it actually is pretty good, for Hipster 'cue. The best part of the place is the big jugs of beer, and bourbon, but the BBQ can be pretty tasty some nights. Sometimes not. It's kind of the nature of BBQ, which really is an imperfect science.

Yeah, okay, I had Hill Country tonight so I guess I have an altered opinion now. The meat is definitely not smoked enough.

That said, for the price, and for what you get, I really do still like Hill Country. The sausage is ridiculously good, and the brisket could rival Katz's Pastrami (could, but doesn't based on taste). From now on, I know what I'm getting from Hill Country each time (brisket, sausage, mac & cheese, beans & burnt ends)... I think what I like most about HC is that they sell by weight, so you can get a sample of everything (like I did tonight).

So all that said, if you like a lot of smoke, Hill Country is a bit lacking. But for the quality/preparation of meat for what you get for the price, Hill Country beats out most other places I've tried (virgils, dinosaur, RUB, etc).

Thanks to this thread, there's plenty of places I want to try now.

- Rack & Soul (W.109th St)
- Houston's (E.53rd St)
- Duke's (E.19th St)

Not to forget Mo Gridder's (Hunt's Point Bronx) http://www.mogridder.com/ since I'm in the same borough.

Dinosaur has the best wings I've ever had---but their ribs were only so-so. I do like their sauces, though not quite as good as Anchor Bar.

The only good pulled pork/bbq in this city is at Fette Sau in Billyburg. Daisy May's is okay, Dinosaur is okay (some items are better than the others), and nothing else I've had is worth speaking of.

I've said it before-- Houston's ribs are pretty darn amazing. Yes, it IS sad a chain is even in the running here, but it's true. Neither Hill Country, Dinosaur, Virgil's or Blue Smoke is head and shoulders better than Houstons. I also maintain Houstons has one of the better burgers in the City....

about houston's - i would def say that they are top 3 in the city for ribs. flavor is great and they're so tender they fall off the bone.

Went to Daisy May's cart for the pulled pork and it was OK. The sauce was way to thick and sweet and I dont like when the pork is mixed in with the sauce. I prefer my sauce to be thin, vinegary (is that even a word?), and not mixed in with the pork.

I'm definitly going to have to make some pulled pork at home this weekend after all this talk about BBQ and the dissapointment of Daisy Mays...

Of those mentioned and that I have tried:

Blue Smoke is good and as El Dubya El says a bit pricey.

Dinosaur has some of the best wings in the city, but it is far away in West Harlem. Ditto for Rack & Soul.

Dallas BBQ is the cheapest of the bunch, but not 'real' Q and undistinguished, except for the fact that it is better than the over-priced dreck they foist on unsuspecting tourists and suckers at Virgils.

Best bet in mid-town would be Daisy May's shop on the far west side.

i think hill country is WAY overrated, esp with the ribs! they're really fatty and not even that tender. sides aren't great either. blue smoke, which isn't too far away, is a LOT better, but also pretty pricy.

of all the bbq i've had in ny, daisy may's was the best. dinosaur and rack and soul are both pretty good but way too far. rub on 23rd has pretty good pulled pork, but the ribs are mediocre, best thing there are the burnt ends. and i haven't been to wildwood, but i've heard great things about them.

Oh, I really love Dinosaur, it's tops on my list for pulled pork in the city, except it is far away and I'm not comfortable walking by closed/abandoned? factories late at night.
