Not really a secret, heh.

http://feistyfoodie.com/2008/09/24/ragtime-gourmet-howard-beach-queens/

It's a brisk walk from the train but really worth it. I realize I posted photos of roast beef sandwiches, but I know for a fact that they have eggplant parm in their case and anything in the case can be put in a sandwich. They've got an amazing selection of prepared foods, too... yum. Broccoli salad, green bean salad, lots of really good stuff, so vegetarian as well.

If you're anywhere near Bay Ridge... well, I have a place there for sandwiches too that are *amazing* I might be biased since I was one of the judges in their recent sandwich contest, but they also have AMAZING CUPCAKES and omfg... well just Google it or look it up on my site, I don't want to blast links on Zach's website, but Robicelli's... mmm damn.

Kimbap is an interesting idea... I might take a look... Yvo, I'm taking the E tomorrow, but I'd *love* to know your secret spot for future reference/when I go to JFK from Brooklyn!

No olive oil or vinegar, that's liquid and will not be allowed past security if it's over the what 3 ounces?

If you're up for a short walk from the A train JFK station... let me know, I have a kick ass place in Howard Beach for sandwiches.

I don't think you can get food past security. They make you buy everything after that hassle.

What about getting a package of kimbap from Woorijip? Doesn't need to be chilled, won't get mushy, and packs flat.

Defontes looks good, but it might be too far, sadly... Milano looks solid, though. They've got a few veggie sandwiches for this damned hippie

and Rudy:
Airplane = solid

Good call with Defontes. Number 34 (roast pork) all the way. Maybe ask them to put the "juice" in a separate cup instead of onto the roll and reassemble on the plane.

Sarah, if you really want to treat yourself, take a walk down to Defontes, 21 and 3rd. HUGE sandwiches--will definitely hold up!

Or go to milano 34th btwn 5th and 6th, again huge sandwiches that will definitely hold up.

So I'm flying to LA tomorrow night (tacos!!) and in order to avoid a dinner of $9 nachos at JFK, I usually buy a sandwich and eat that for dinner on the plane. I'd love some recommendations for a place to get a sandwich that will hold up for a few hours, particularly in the bread department. I was thinking Macaron Cafe? or maybe le Pain Quotidien? Also I work on 5th and 35th so preferably somewhere in the area....
