MWinston: (labor issues aside) Amish Market on 9th Ave is not exactly "midtown east" that the OP was asking about. In fact, it's so far west it's OOMLB. Any plug is a good plug though, eh?

Regarding Amish Market, for what it's worth, the workers are advertising on MidtownLunch.com suggesting that the owners are treating the workers very badly and stealing from them.

<---As a matter of fact, it's right there right now on my screen. Here's their link. http://www.nothingfineaboutit.org/
I'm not endorsing anything, just pointing out.

D&S Deli on 56th between 5th and 6th is pretty solid. More of a suburban deli than the generic midtown ones.

I got to Toasties pretty often and their sandwiches are pretty satisfying for about $8 for a hero. The best part is they really load up the sandwiches with meat or whatever else you are getting in it. Definitely check it out on Third Ave between 55 and 56 if you're in that area.

I hate generic delis, but there is one I go to because it's cheap and portion is big. I have no idea what the name is, but my office coins it the "dirty deli" (hey, you get what you pay for!) and it's located on 53rd St between 6th and 7th Ave.

Hot Sandwiches are huge and ~ 6-7 bucks.

defontes is great. I'll also repeat, milano deli, 34th between madison and 5th. I have half the milano special sitting in my fridge. it is as hearty as delfontes, but no hot salad or marinated mushrooms. More meat though, which is a plus in mybook.

It's out of range but I had a huge killer roast beast sandwich (#20) at Defontes at 3rd Ave & 21st St last week.

Big, thick, long and meaty enough to choke a Mamacita

Tired of getting yanked for some $10 and feeling hungry afterwards. My old go-to Madeleine's closed on me, as did another spot nearly across the street on lex. So, midtown east sandwich size, where to????
