My husband has lots of friends who have various food restrictions (allergies, sensitivities, intolerances, vegan, vegetarian, strictly kosher, etc.). He has told me more than once he is glad he married someone who can eat (or, at least, try) more or less everything. ;-)

Chewing with your mouth open and talking with food in your mouth is in the same category: nasty! Deal breaker! I'm still seeing the slightly chewed food in your mouth.

There are time for proper manners and there are times to be messy. Hello, I love barbecue ribs!

sushiburger, those same people are probably overly sensitive in lots of parts of their lives, and probably I wouldn't get along with them too well if they kept getting in my face.

i think ppl that are 'overly' sensitive towards table manners and cleanliness are annoying.. sometimes you just have to get messy and grab that pint of beer with bbq sauce all over your hands... whatever..

you're right steveroller, poor editing on my part :)

I think what we all need to do is sit down at a restaurant together, eat a meal and critique each other throughout the course of the meal. Obviously you'd have to PRETEND that you're out on a casual night with friends and not being judged by strangers.

Ill-mannered?

I think I dine with the similar rotation of friends and no issues either. We just enjoy the food or talk in-between the feasting. No gross-out spitting or speed-eating. I eat pretty fast sometimes but it isn't like I made it disappeared. If I'm very hungry or if I'm enjoying it a lot, then the food will be inside me.

Perhaps "stupider" (implying intelligence as the counterpart) was the wrong word to use.

I find there's little correlation between eating manners and intelligence. Think how messy Stephen Hawkings must be.

I don't spit food. If I'm lifting a taco to my mouth and biting into it, though, there tends to be some lettuce dropping or whatever. And I do NOT talk while there is food in my mouth!!!

I don't like the food getting cold either, but conversation is rarely that intense/ongoing. To be honest, I do tend to eat with the same several friends so we've fallen into a natural pattern that I am sitting here thinking about, trying to figure out so I can describe to you why it works. It doesn't interfere with eating and our food doesn't get cold, so I'm inclined to believe we don't gab gab gab when our entrees arrive, I guess it's light conversation. When the food is REALLY good though, we're all dead silent (this has happened a few times, and we've all commented on the phenomenom).

I think this is a case of me just assuming this is normal and other people knowing much stupider people or something. (I'm not trying to be snotty, but someone who'd just met me suddenly said to me, "You know what I look for in a girl? Someone who can hold a conversation and isn't retarded" and I was like, I don't know anyone who can't hold conversations. It's just normal/expected for me that people can hold conversations ranging in topics and are halfway intelligent.) Not saying you/your friends are stupid, but that I haven't encountered the type of people that you guys must have, at some point, to have thought of people who talk way too much, spit food, or put their head to the plate (figuratively) and just eat like a pig at a trough.

I don't need most of my food piping screaming hot, but I don't like cold food, and only can remember once talking so much that the food got cold (but that was a serious conversation that necessitated talking more than the food).

And yes. Waiting for everyone's entree to arrive before you begin is simple manners.

I think AL@1PP meant "sacred" but after reading the whole post I'm not so sure anymore. It does sound like a frightening expereience. Someone late for their latin dance class?

Jaykay, AL@1PP, jk.

Anyway, there's some different eating philosophies at play here. My ideal meal is like a Roman feast. Lots of lounging, hours long, loose clothing, occasional vomitorium trips to purge, more wine, etc.

I'm a clumsy eater (clumsier and nervous around pretty ladies LOL). I get sauce all over myself sometimes depending on the food and utensil. That's why I'm a bigtime napkin abuser. Poor trees.

Wings are better enjoyed by hand (despite the hot sauce all over my face). Same with burger, pizza, fries, sandwich, and any other hand-held foods.
