There's lots of stuff that $5 or less, the hard part is finding something that's actually a good deal.
I'll go with $1 pizza slices from the 2Bros on 46th, the falafel at Kwik ($5), Chaat from the Indian Newstand on 39th and 6th. Personally, I think it's much easier to find a good meal under $6 than $5.

5DollarQueen - damn really? In Queens whole rotisserie chickens are at LEAST $6, but usually $7 and up. I think CostCo has them for $6 (though they are pretty big)... and if you're really inclined, you can make that into a LOT of meals, finishing off with the frame for soup/stock. Yeah I got it like that. ;)

OMG. I totally forgot about the Farmer Market/Meat Market behind the Port Authority. WOW! Memories. Do they still serve the HUMONGO heros for $5? Has anyone had them recently? I used to go in the 90's all the time, when I got my first fulltime job near there- I was making a little over minimum wage and was broke. They were so monstrous, they would last for lunch and dinner.

I also ate a lot at Happy Family on 10th. They would make "whatever you want, 5 dollar, 5 minute". I think in general any Chinese place will be your cheapest option.

So, back at the supermarket in Port Authority, I was looking at their rotisserie chickens and they are only about $5 each. $5 for the entire chicken! So, I bought one and kept it in the company fridge and had a small piece of it everyday. *BAM* You've just spent about a $1 p/day on lunch if you can separate the chicken and stretch it out for the entire work week. Get some veggies next door and you are good to go.

Yeah, in the PA area you can also get a beer or 2 plus hot dogs at either Rudy's or Port 41, for under $5. (Sorry if this has been mentioned here already.) And there's a pretty good fruit/veggie truck on 9th, for inexpensive dessert/side options.

There's a grocery store behind the Port Authority, actually it's on the block where the 99 cent pizzas and the farmers market next door. Well, inside you hit the deli as soon as you walk in and they offer a good number of $5.00 and less hero/roll sandwiches. I've seen a lot of EMT and some blue collar workers swarm the counter as I try to get my lunch meat for work.

They also offer specials that fall into the $5.00 price range. If you get a sandwich that's under $5 then you might have enough left for a piece of fruit next door at the market.

@Dan L:

Ok, so I traveled back to Carribean Kitchen in that little square next to KMart and Penn Station.

Yes. I can confirm that they do serve a $5 version of their lunch. They may advertise their small as being $7, but there's an even smaller one which is $5. As I said before, they do pack a HUGE portion of food in there. You can get rice&beans and/or mac n cheese w/meat and some veggies w/a plantano (or two, I can't really remember).
