Yeah, in the PA area you can also get a beer or 2 plus hot dogs at either Rudy's or Port 41, for under $5. (Sorry if this has been mentioned here already.) And there's a pretty good fruit/veggie truck on 9th, for inexpensive dessert/side options.

There's a grocery store behind the Port Authority, actually it's on the block where the 99 cent pizzas and the farmers market next door. Well, inside you hit the deli as soon as you walk in and they offer a good number of $5.00 and less hero/roll sandwiches. I've seen a lot of EMT and some blue collar workers swarm the counter as I try to get my lunch meat for work.

They also offer specials that fall into the $5.00 price range. If you get a sandwich that's under $5 then you might have enough left for a piece of fruit next door at the market.

@Dan L:

Ok, so I traveled back to Carribean Kitchen in that little square next to KMart and Penn Station.

Yes. I can confirm that they do serve a $5 version of their lunch. They may advertise their small as being $7, but there's an even smaller one which is $5. As I said before, they do pack a HUGE portion of food in there. You can get rice&beans and/or mac n cheese w/meat and some veggies w/a plantano (or two, I can't really remember).

I forgot about this place, but there is a Chinese spot on 33rd btwn 5th and Mad. that has $4.99 lunch specials. They include rice/lomein w/2 sides.

Also, I'm heading out to make sure about the prices of that West Indian place I mentioned earlier. I do remember the small plates being hella cheaper than the big ones which is why I ate there as often as I did.

Yesterday I discovered a gem while browsing the "by food type" list.

Aunt Kim's on 46th btwn 5th and 6th. They have the fried whiting fish sandwhich that zach has raved about, for $3.50. I went high class with the fried flounder sandwhich, for a whopping $4.50. This thing was GOOD. You can get it a choice of a couple ways, but I got it on white bread, no lettuce or tomato, just tartar sauce and hot sauce. It had a lot of fish on it, especially for its size. I would imagine if you ordered in on a hero it would probably be the same amount of fish and just spread out. It was perfectly crispy but awesomely moist inside, and I don't even think it was made to order, because it was very quick to make. Either way, it was still perfect about 20 minutes later when I sat down to eat it. Wrapped in that wax kinda paper and then tin foil kept it great. For $4.50 and no tax, you can't miss. I WILL be going back today.

I think zach should have like a weekly reminder for new readers on the home page so no one misses out on this place.

Wilma and I had this for under $5.00, but then again, cost of living is really low here in the stone ages. That said, the cost of repairing the car after the carhop set it down did exceed $5.00
