a friend of mine in CA was nice enough to explain to me that it is a San Francisco city law and not statewide.

4 percent surcharge? Ok, duly noted on their Verizon-ing of the bill. Tip only 11%-16% in Cali then.

Steve - at cheap places, it's about turnover and volume. (And it was $15 for breakfast, I'd hardly call it cheap.) Besides, if all the places in CA have to do this - including, oh, French Laundry - look at the price points we're talking here.

Great, restaurants are turning into Ticketmaster adding a surcharge for everything under the sun. F**them.

not sure a 4% charge on cheap meals will be much a financial windfall to make a difference

I'd just take 4% out of the tip. Seems fair.

Initially, I thought, Well, okay, that's great that the servers are getting healthcare from the restaurant (my assumption that's what it meant). As long as it's not the CA government pushing their political agenda on me, then I am okay with it.

I later mentioned this to other people who said it WAS a CA govt thing, but I tried Googling it and couldn't find any specific legislation on it.

I don't appreciate having a political agenda pushed on me if this is the case, especially in light of it being something in which I don't believe. However, in the end, it came out to 54c (it's broken out separately from the tax on the final receipt, which I kept).

Curiously, as a tangential offshoot of the other thread about tipping on alcohol, would you tip a little less because of this surcharge?

Just wondering other people's thoughts.

PS I am not here to discuss whether or not you believe in universal healthcare... I just want to know what you think about this specific surcharge.

I was in SF recently and went to breakfast at a local spot. On the bottom of the menu was typed

4% Healthcare Service Charge will be added to all transactions

What are your thoughts on this?
