Went there today and got Chicken Curry. Meru was there and there was no line at all. My order did not get mixed up and the chicken was great.

A few nice suggestions here - still surprised this isn't more common considering how well they do on the streets. Thanks everyone.

Try Zeytinz on the south side of Bryant Park. I haven't ever gotten it, but one of my co-workers came back once with what looked like upscale street meat. If I recall, it was close to $10.

Looks like you can see the chicken over rice in the pictures section:

you could try Bi Lokma on East 45th street (btw 2nd and 3rd).

http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/bi-lokma/

They have pretty good quality shawarma. They actually layer the meat on the spit and it maintains juicy flavor that does not exist in a prepackaged log. They have white and buckwheat rices as well. Haven't got anything else there but looks like you can get a kebab wrap or some other smaller meze-like bites.

Full disclosure: the service can be unfriendly and it is a bit pricey. You'll get a shawarma platter with rice and cabbage for about $10 and its less food than a typical 'street meat' experience.

I've walked by Gyro King on 26th and 3rd Ave. Never tried it, but there were some menu items that look Halal Cart-ish (chicken and rice, lamb and rice...).

Haha. Only because my fat arse cannot eat the good stuff every day and be able to live to tell about it.
But I have, of course, used ground lamb and also one a mix of ground beef and ground pork. All good stuff.

Try making it at home. To be healthly, I use ground turkey and brown rice (sometimes even quinoa). For hot sauce - sirrachi. For white sauce, try looking up some recipes online and you eventually find one you like or at least able to tweek it.
Is it exactly the same, no. Does it satisfy the craving...definitely.

Since I don't eat street meat, I have been looking for the same thing as well and can't seem to find it either. The Pump (now Dig Inn) used to make some kind of street meat replica, but I suspect it was not even close. I hope there are some good suggestions.

jbeats, no restaurant that I know of sells "street meat." As Dave said, you can ask a greek place or turkish place to chop the gyro and put sauce on it and serve it over rice, but if you want the chicken/fake lamb flattop deal over rice, like you get at a cart/truck, you gotta go to an actual truck/cart. Rice and seasonings...white (you realize this is just spiced mayo right?)and hot sauce. That is funny funny shit. No reputable turkish or middle eastern restaurant is going to serve you mayo sauce and pretend its tzatziki, a yogurt based sauce, but if that's what you prefer, along with fake lamb and crappy quality chicken (which I admittedly enjoy as well, though not nearly as much as the good real stuff like real gyro with real tzatziki), more power to you....

Dave, thanks for the suggestion - I've had that before. It's close and definitely a great dish, but still not exactly the same to me.

I guess it's more about the the type of rice, seasonings, white/hot sauces, chicken meat (not the kebab style that a Turkish restaurant would offer), salad mixed in that makes it all unique. So easy to find on the street but apparently really difficult to find on a restaurant menu.

You can try Turkish or similar restaurants -- Ali Baba seems to be on E 34th -- which will have a doner kebab or similar, "doner" being the "lamb on a rotating spit" you know and love.
