Went by the Macaron Cafe here on 59th for lunch. I got the "usual" Tuesday lunch special (rochetta cheese, bressaola, pesto and cherry tomatoes). While I was paying I noticed that they had printed a new menu out which had different "more seasonal" daily sandwich specials including the Tuesday Croque Monsieur mentioned on this site in the past (as well as at least one other sandwich involving a bechamel sauce)

Was in a rush so I didnt ask when they were starting, but I will definitely keep my eyes open and report back.

Anyone else have any info?

When I was a lad, they had a public service announcement that ran during some of my favorite cartoons. It was called "Don't Drown Your Food", and basically consisted of an extended admonition against the use of condiments, dressings, or flavorings of any sort whatsoever. You may find this shocking, but I'm a bit of a contrarian and was even at that impressionable young age. So after being exposed to this PSA over and over, I started really dumping on the sauces, because I'd be damned if the TV could tell me what to do with my salad dressing. Now my kitchen is well-stocked with everything from sriracha to Branston Pickle. Food is NOT better when it's practically plain.

Tune in next time for another exciting episode of "How I Got That Way."

Cheese - haha Russian dressing is just mayo and ketchup :D

Masto - actually Chris is already my food nemesis. But mock my mother (who, in this instance, did not do anything wrong, except maybe indulging a bratty kid who didn't want any of her homecooking - but then again I was severely underweight, so, she had to do what she had to do), and you fall into a world of pain.

Yvo, my uncle put Russian Dressing on everything as a kid.

My condiments:

Horseradish goes on roastbeef.
Deli/Spicy Mustard can go on anything, sausages, hot dogs, sandwiches.
Malt vinegar on fish and chips.
Hot sauce cholula/franks/sriracha can go on/in just about anything too.

I don't use mayo in anything and ketchup only goes into a pile next to (NOT ON!) french fries and a little goes into the messy mix on top of my burgers (Mustard, ketchup, pepper, and hot sauce if I can get it).

Don't be sad, Chris. It's awfully difficult to become Yvo's nemesis. Many try, few succeed. I know, I've been there. Despite my best efforts, we kinda sorta got along after all. I'll sponsor you if you want to join the support group. It's bring-your-own-pasta. Remember, the first step is admitting you have a problem. Then you put your trust in a higher power: Krispy Kreme. Man, I miss that place.

Uh. My mom didn't put the ketchup in. I did. Did you even read that?

Don't try to become my real nemesis, Chris... that won't be fun for either of us :P

Ooh, that's a great idea for leftover curry (sauce form)! Of course I usually dump my rice in and mix liberally so there's no real leftover sauce... haha

Hey guys, wanna hear my #1 "weird thing"? :) This freaks people out. I mean REALLY freaks them out. When I was little, my mom would make spaghetti, and I would beg to be allowed to put kethcup on it.

...

My mom used to stir fry spaghetti with chicken and celery (that's what I remember, I'm sure there was other stuff in it). There must've been soy sauce involved, because it was lightly brown, and I just didn't care for it as is. Being a child, and being the demographic for which ketchup is basically intended (that's children, btw, it's super sweet and fun to dip), I liked adding it to my stir-fried spaghetti. Mom eventually realized that she should just make me red sauce for my spaghetti and I no longer asked for ketchup on my spaghetti, but yeah.

Still freaks people out, even though it was closer to lo mein made with spaghetti noodles instead of lo mein noodles. I'm not ashamed... it's one of my favorite food memories :)
*and yes, my entire memory of childhood is filled with memories of food*

- It's not a sandwich unless it has cheese. Preferably good ole American (not individually wrapped slices, Deli American).
- Ketchup has no place in this world with one exception: A component of barbecue sauce (and even then there are ways around that).
- Barbecue Sauce.
- Mayo is always welcome, as is mustard (save for chinese mustard or reconstituted colemans). Even better when they're both involved.
- Heat, in most any form; Frank's Red Hot, Cholula, Melinda's Habanero, Inner Beauty / Rasta Fire, El Yucateco, Sriracha, Harissa, etc.
- Tsatziki, especially when I want to think I'm eating healthier than dolloping on some mayo.
- Guacamole, for the same reason above.
- Curry (either sauce or powder). I often save leftover vindaloo sauce for curried chicken salad the next day.
