I agree about Penzey's as their spices are the best and so fresh! I like Junior's as well - LiLac chocolates - Zaro's has great canolli's - Oren's Coffee - Corrado Bread and Pastry - Murray's also has salami and great meats to go with the cheese -

StreetMeas, yes, i thought the same about the Financier desserts. They look great but they don't taste as good as they look. My sis who is a pastry cook tasted a few stuff from there and said, they don't use good quality ingredients. O_O i was like, how can you tell???

Yea, Yvo LOVES dishes' banana and chocolate puddings. No joke.

I like the belgium chocolate in the pudding. Good stuff!! Banana was only okay for me when I had it a while back. Too much of a chocolate person it would seem. Heck, I'd probably be all over JELLO PUDDING SNACKS.

I can go inside the GCT market every workday if I wanted to. My first stop is usually Murray's cheese(Ah, stinky and putrid cheeses) and then to go eyeball Zaro's pastries. I want the Chocolate Lava cupcake recently but then my fat-ass shouldn't. Financier (also in GC) usually has better pastries (better looking, I can't vouch for taste on all.)

@Zach - no doubt (it's once), but I have always paid for the banana pudding and have been back a few times for the Valrhona chocolate pudding (ask StreetMeas; he knows!). I've also been back to buy the Zaro's items I mentioned. :P :)

Murray's has a great selection of cheeses and meats. I love the goat cheese and salami. Penzys spices are great, they have a lot of things you can't find in normal supermarkets. Their unsweeted cocoa powder is my favorate for baking. Oren's Daily Roast has pretty good coffee, I perfer the espresso at Joes though.

I love Grand Central Market and hate your grammar.

Murray's is great for meats & cheeses, Corrado has some good stuff. I like Zaro's ciabatta loaf and their foccacia is really tasty as a snack or a whole meal if you're a small eater or eat it with cheese from Murray's.

I'm also in love with Dishes' Valrhona chocolate pudding and their banana pudding. I'm not a pudding expert by any means, but both are really quite tasty.

Oh, and there's a chocolatier? in there that might be good, I don't really eat too much chocolate so I don't know.

As for the spices vs. other spices, I think the concept is that McCormick's is less fresh so it holds less flavor, but I couldn't say for sure, though I cook a fair amount at home, I haven't noticed any discernible difference between the cheaper spices vs. the more expensive ones. I think Penzey's has a wider variety and some things you won't find in a supermarket, though.

/slightly off topic

I'm in love with Kalustyan's. Every time I go there I walk out with a spice that I have no idea how to use. Last time I went to buy za'atar and truffle oil and I ended up buying vadouvan and Chinese 5 spice. What the hell do I do with vadouvan??

No, there really is nothing worth it there. I was shocked last week when I saw them selling cooked whole lobsters for $15 a lb when my local grocery store was selling live ones for $3.99. Ugh, I hate that place.

With Kalustyan's less than a mile away (and how often do you need to stock up on spices?), I always go there over Penzey's.

Murray's Salami is also worth checking out. And Corrado's has better bread than most spots on the area. But aside from that, just about everything is a splurge, so "worth it" is tough to justify. I've gotten some fantastic fish from Wild Edibles, but at jaw-dropping prices (I usually go for cheaper fish like skate if I'm shopping there). I've also gotten some really good meat at the counter across from Wild Edibles, but again, the prices are insane.
