A Gourmet Popcorn Truck Is Roaming The Streets Of Downtown

Do you want to feel like you’re at the movies at lunch time? Well, there’s a truck called Brooklyn Popcorn that’s been regularly parking on Wall St. and in Soho on Prince St. selling different flavors of popcorn: Caramel, cheddar, butter, dill pickle, parmesan garlic, they have them all! Whether or not the kernels at this Brooklyn-based truck are hand-harvested and popped with artisanal air by men with beards is up in the air.

Desi Chef On Wheels Is Still On The Road; Greek Street Meat Cart MIA?

There have been some fluctuations with the trucks and carts in the lower part of the Financial District as the area continues to be clogged with generators and vehicles taking up parking spots.

A couple of you lunchers have written in wondering where the Desi Chef On Wheels and All American Diner I & II trucks, and the Greek Street Meat cart have been. Apparently the trucks had been MIA for a week or more and you were going into withdrawal from Indian food and hero sandwiches.

While this is all worrisome, I have come bearing a little bit of good news.

In Which We Finally Get Around To Eating At The Bian Dang Truck

There are a few long-running food trucks in this city that have somehow managed to never be reviewed by Downtown Lunch, either because of infrequently parking down here or never tweeting their location (or doing it two hours after most people eat lunch). Bian Dang is truck that we’ve not written about, although we did check out their offshoot Fun Buns cart when it debuted last year. The truck’s been parking in the Financial District occasionally again after most trucks were unable or unwilling to come down here due to disaster recovery vehicles and equipment everywhere, coupled with a lower supply of office workers.

This is really the perfect time of year to eat some Taiwanese comfort food, so I was more than happy to pay the truck a visit when they were parked on Water St. earlier this week.

Palenque’s Colombian Arepas Are Good, But Are They A Good Value?

When the Palenque truck debuted downtown back in March of 2012, I rushed over to eat what was perhaps my first Colombian arepa. That first experience was something of a shit show and reminded me of why it’s a good idea to wait a bit to check out a new truck. I somewhat enjoyed the arepa I got there, although it suffered a bit in transit, and when the truck was parked near my office last week I decided to give them a second chance. While my lunch was good, I question the value of the food I got for nearly $10.

All Meats At The Gyro House Truck Are Not Created Equal

The Gyro House Truck on Cedar St. (at Broadway) has a somewhat limited menu and thus sometimes I forget about it in favor of kati rolls and Thai food from the carts across the street at Liberty Plaza. They do a mean chicken over rice, and tasty falafel, but I’d heard rumors that the lamb gyro from this truck wasn’t too shabby either (and was in fact championed by one of my predecessors). On a day when salty meat and rice sounded amazing, and it was above freezing outside, I headed over for a street meat lunch.

Does TD Bank’s Ad Agency Owe This Site Some Thanks?

Kofta Hero

Kofta sandwich from Little Morocco: One of many varieties in this city.

Yesterday it came to our attention that TD Bank has a new ad up in the subway touting the fact that you can get a kofta sandwich from a truck in this city. Well, Robert Sietsema over at Village Voice food blog Fork in the Road wonders if perhaps the ad writers cribbed from Midtown Lunch to come up with this copy. As flattering as that thought is, all you’d have to do is troll Twitter or Google a bit to come up with that particular mobile food item.

Make A Resolution To Eat More Veggies? The $5.50 Lunch Truck’s Veg Plate Is A Good Option

Whenever I’m craving vegetables, my mind often wanders to the $5 $5.50 Lunch Truck run by the affable Kiflu at the corner of Ann St. & Nassau. He does great things with fish and other meats, but sometimes my favorite part of his plates is the stewed, slightly curried potato, carrot and cabbage that comes on the side. It occurred to me that he had a vegetable plate on the menu and I’d never ordered it so I went to rectify the situation.
