The Long Walk To Tacos El Idolo Yields A Massive Pork Cemita

Note: I wrote this before hurricane Sandy messed up the Financial District and its lunch options. And because I’ve been unable to work at my office due to lack of phone or Internet service I haven’t been able to confirm if this truck has continued to park in its usual spot. If nothing else, you get to read about a pork sandwich.

After a couple of failed attempts at catching Tacos El Idolo in its spot off of Whitehall St., (usually on Pearl St. but I think they’ve been on Bridge too), I finally caught up with them late last week after spotting a crowd of be-suited guys waiting on the sidewalk. The menu is similar to the Tacos Morelos truck that parks at Wall & Water everyday, but if you work at the bottommost reaches of the Financial District, Tacos El Idolo is the closer option. While I was tempted by the tacos (as I always am), instead I ordered a cemita and was not disappointed with what I got. Read more »

Tacos El Idolo Truck Now Parking At Bottom Of The FiDi

Lunch’er Serene wrote in earlier this week to let us know that another Mexican food truck’s been parking in the nether regions of the Financial District. Sure enough, Tacos El Idolo which some of you may know from its usual spot in Chelsea has started parking at Pearl St. & Whitehall. This is likely good news for those of you whose Mexican food options near Bowling Green until now have included Chipotle, Mad Dog & Beans and terrible deli burritos. Click through for a look at the menu and what Serene said about the food she and a co-worker got from the truck. Read more »

Sabor de Mexico’s Now Open In The FiDi

sabor de mexico

If you don’t particularly like Chipotle (or its ridiculous lunchtime lines) and can’t make it to the taco trucks, you’ll be happy to know that Sabor de Mexico‘s open on Nassau St. (btw. John & Fulton). We’ve already reviewed some of the items at the location on Trinity Place (at Thames) and while some are found wanting like the Americanized tacos, there’s more selection of items and meats than at the chain places and it’s also slightly cheaper. There will be a review of the new shop at some point this week when a hankering for some Mexican food hits.

We Can All Be Glad Tacos Morelos Has Taken Root Downtown

If you go out in certain neighborhoods of the city, you may have eaten from a Tacos Morelos Truck, possibly while drunk. There are multiple trucks that, according to the T-shirt of the guy working at the one that’s been frequenting Wall & Water streets, park in Williamsburg, Jackson Heights and the East Village. The menu at this truck is the most diverse of any of the Mexican trucks that have parked in the Financial District and I was curious how it would compare with San Luis Taco Truck that’s been parking on Front & Wall for quite a while. After a taste of the namesake product at Tacos Morelos, I can say you should come hungry and be a meat eater.

Tacos Morelos Truck Tries Its Hand In The FiDi

tm truck

I swear, every day there’s another truck or cart trying their hand in the Financial District. We already have the very solid San Luis Taco truck on Front & Wall, and now ML contributor Brian sends word he spotted the Tacos Morelos truck at Wall & Water this morning. They normally park in Williamsburg, the truck’s workers said, and they were here on Tuesday as well. You can see the menu after the jump.

Giving Mike N Willie’s A Do-Over After Disappointing First Visit

My lunch plans were all kinds of screwed up last week due to the rain and trying to track down a food truck that wasn’t parked where Twitter said it was. There were a bunch of other food trucks in the area, and I spotted the bright green of Mike N Willie’s poised to save me from my low blood sugar with no line. My first visit in February after the truck launched was disappointing and not exactly cheap, but I’m all about second chances so I ordered a taco and a slider hoping for hunger’s sake that this lunch would work out.

Checking In With Nixtamalito Nets Tamales, La Newyorkina Cart

It’s been nearly a year since we checked in with the Nixtamalito kiosk over by 1 Centre St. at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge, but I was happy I did the other day. I was there to finally check out the tamales which have eluded me every other time I’ve been there. The menu for the kiosk has stayed the same, but I’m happy to report there’s now a cart next to it selling paletas from La NewYorkina! The details on that and the word on the tamales (spoiler: they’re really good) after the jump.
