PROFILE: Downtown Lunch’er “Emi”

As is customary here on Midtown Lunch: Downtown, every Tuesday we’ll profile a different lunch’er and get their recommendations for places to eat in Downtown NYC. This week, we have Emi who loves Japanese dumplings, but shuns gray meat. And she needs your help finding good sushi.

Name: Emi

Occupation: Business manager

Where you work: Greenwich & N. Moore streets

Age: 31

Favorite kinds of food: Gyoza (Japanese pork dumplings), ramen, french fries, hamachi kama, dolsot bibimbap, boquerones in vinegar, a good almond croissant, Liberte coconut yogurt

Least favorite foods: Tough, over-cooked meat; overly fatty cuts of meat (except when it comes to pork…bring it).

Favorite lunches downtown: Nyonya on Grand St. (btw. Mulberry & Mott) for Hainese chicken (white meat only, otherwise you’ll have to deal with chopped up bones) with chicken broth rice; XO Kitchen on Hester (at Elizabeth) for baked grouper over rice with cheese or preserved duck egg with lean pork congee; Grandaisy on W. Broadway (at 6th Ave.) for citrus almond cake and cherry frangipane tart (they don’t always have it) for an afternoon snack.

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: Chicken fried rice at Viet Cafe on Greenwich (nr. Harrison), for the convenience factor.

Places downtown you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch: Downtown? Wah Mei Fast Food on Hester (btw. Baxter & Mulberry). Get the chicken leg over rice and a tea egg!

Dream job location, purely for lunch purposes, and why: Midtown East. So many good Japanese joints! Katsuhama, Sushiden’s chirashi box, and Cafe Zaiya to name a few.

Anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch: Downtown readers? Any passable sushi places in Tribeca? I haven’t come across any!

Maybe try Zutto at Hudson & Harrison – the sushi and ramen there are over the $10 price cap, but are probably better than the cheaper places. Who else has good sushi recs in Tribeca for Emi? And as always, if you would like to be next week’s Profiled Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate), email us at downtown@midtownlunch.com.

  • I get the lunch specials at New Ashiya III(on Greenwich) pretty regularly, it does the trick for me, but is certainly nothing special. My coworkers like Tataki (on Lispenard), but I think it’s pricey. The lunch special at JR Sushi was good but a touch pricier than Ashiya. Tongin Mart (on Mulberry) is just a grocery but actually has a great sushi bar with fresh-made sushi inside. I like the sushi at Mika (on Centre) too.
