PROFILE: Downtown Lunch’er “Shirley”

As is customary here on Midtown Lunch, every Tuesday we’ll profile a different lunch’er and get their recommendations for places to eat in Downtown NYC. This week, we have Shirley who works a bit out of our normal boundaries in the West Village, but dips down into Soho for some food trucks on occasion. She needs your help learning to love spicy food.

Name: Shirley Chan

Occupation: Copywriter

Where you work: Morton & Washington

Age: 33

Favorite kinds of food: Steak and fried chicken – obsessed with Dirty Bird To Go (on 14th St. btw. 7th & 8th) lately. Brussels sprouts. I just discovered an amazing Japanese tapas dish that drizzles some sort of miso soy sauce mixture on top… try it at Rockmeisha!

Least favorite foods: Anything spicy. Unfortunately my taste buds are less adventurous than I’d like them to be. I have trained myself to withstand a “mild” at authentic Indian restaurants though. That took a few years of hard work.

Favorite lunches downtown:Il Cantuccio on Christopher (at Bleecker) is a traditional Italian bakery with adorable little brioche buns packed with prosciutto. On nice days, you can get their picnic pack which have a few small sandwiches and refreshing Italian sodas. I tend to storm the Bistro Truck when it’s parked in the ‘hood (generally Hudson & King once a week). I love everything they offer, so it changes every time. Their vegetables over couscous is always fragrant and softly moist. And anything they offer with lamb,  eat it! Just south of Washington Square Park, there are some wonderful and wallet-friendly options that you can get to go and eat in the park (watch out for squirrels). More favorite foods straight ahead!

Fun Buns in Tribeca, Two Dumpling Types On Wall St.: Wall St. is the place to be today for dumplings with Rickshaw and Chinese Mirch on the stretch between William and Water. Elsewhere on the ML Downtown Twitter Tracker...Crisp and Hibachi Heaven are at Hudson & King, Domo Taco's at Front & Wall, the WFC lot has Schnitzel & Things, Sweetery, Taim, Gorilla Cheese and Shorty's on Wheels, Fun Buns is on Greenwich St. btw. N. Moore & Hubert and Palenque is at Wall & Hanover.

Giving Taste Of Tandoor’s Steam Table Indian An Official Review

One of my predecessors tried to eat at Taste of Tandoor on Church St. (btw. Warren & Chambers) back in 2009 and it did not go well. There were some words exchanged, and to make a short story even shorter, it ended with a review of Pakistan Tea House instead. Well, yesterday I was in need of a hearty lunch and decided to give T of T another shot to see if it was any better or worse than Bangal Curry or any of the other steam table Indian places in the lower part of Tribeca.

Did you know there used to be clam bars on Fulton St.? Courtesy of Grub St.

Look Out For Tribeca Taco On Water St.: The Friday ML Downtown Twitter Tracker looks like this... Mike N Willie's is at Front & Wall, Korilla's at Front & Gouverneur, Milk Truck's at Wall & William, Domo Taco is at Broad & Water, Bongo Brothers is at Varick & Charlton, Hibachi Heaven's at Old Slip & Water, Tribeca Taco's going rogue somewhere on Water St. with a cart at B'way & Spring, and the WFC lot has Schnitzel & Things, Big D's Grub, Coolhaus, Morris Truck and Mexicue.

NYC Food Truck Site Revamp Adds WFC, Lent Space Schedules

Until now you could find the weekly schedule of what trucks would be at the World Financial Center food truck lot at N. End Ave. & Vesey online, but you had to search for it and there was no such thing for the Lent Space lot at 6th Ave. btw. Grand & Canal in Hudson Square. The NYC Food Truck Association announced on Twitter yesterday that you can now find the schedules for all of its food truck lots on its site, including the two in Lower Manhattan. Of course the schedules are always subject to change as trucks occasionally run into mechanical issues or other problems, but it’s a good tool to find out when you can get your next fix of Italian ice or fancy falafel.
