PROFILE: Downtown Lunch’er “Yury”

As is customary here on Midtown Lunch, every Tuesday we’ll profile a different lunch’er and get their recommendations for places to eat in Downtown NYC. This week, we have Yury who is looking for the perfect Indian burrito (my terminology, not his).

Name: Yury

Occupation: Fraud investigator

Where you work: Broadway & Cedar

Age: 24

Favorite kinds of food: I generally love food and love trying new things, but the three things that I can never go wrong with are burgers, sushi and kati rolls.

Least favorite foods: I can’t stand olives, but other than that I will eat almost anything (within reason).

Favorite lunches downtown: There are a bunch of places downtown that I tend to rotate among. These include: Pita Press on Cedar (btw. William & Pearl) for chicken and lamb platters; Water St. Deli on Water (btw. Broad & Moore) for great udon noodles and a fantastic specialty sandwich selection; Flavors (Multiple Locations) has a nice salad bar; Zeytuna on Maiden Lane (btw. Nassau & William) for their large selection of pretty much everything you can imagine, and it’s also a great place during the summer since they have outdoor seating; Suspenders on Broadway (btw. Pine & Thames), Goodburger on Maiden Lane (at Pearl) and Five Guys on Fulton (at Dutch) all have good burgers. Also, the other day I discovered that there is a Shake Shack over on Murray St. by the World Financial Center, so they will definitely be seeing a lot of me in the coming weeks!

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: Ashby’s. It’s in the building so whenever the weather’s bad or we want something quick we head there.

Places downtown you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch: Downtown? The two most memorable places I discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch are Sam’s Falafel cart on Pine (nr. Broadway) and the Comme Ci Comme Ca truck.

Dream job location, purely for lunch purposes, and why: I would say that I’m already in my dream job location based on lunch. I love the amazing variety of food available within a 10 minute walk from my job. Downtown Manhattan offers just about any type of food you could possibly imagine.

Anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch: Downtown readers? Where can I get the best kati rolls? I think these are one of the greatest culinary creations of all time!

So far the best ones I’ve had were from the Biryani House carts although they don’t have a lot of competition downtown compared to the gold mine in Midtown or Greenwich Village. Anyone want to weigh in on where the best kati rolls are?  And as always, if you would like to be next week’s Profiled Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate), email us at downtown@midtownlunch.com.

  • I really like Kati Roll Co on Bleecker. Like, a lot. Roomali in Curry Hill isn’t bad–it’s healthier and assertively spicy/savory.

    • You think Roomali is healthier? Spicier and more flavorful, sure, but I always thought the rolls were greasier at Roomali than Kati Roll Co.

      • I think healthier here is relative, but yes. The Roomali wrap I had ~2 wks ago was a drier paratha. The paratha @ Kati Roll is greasier and flakier (I like that).

And I think depending on what you get KRC is better. My go-to there is the Chicken. Other stuff is ok, but they do that really really well.
