PROFILE: Downtown Lunch’er “Matthew”

As is customary here on Midtown Lunch, every Tuesday we’ll profile a different lunch’er and get their recommendations for places to eat in Downtown NYC. This week, we have Matthew who works amid financial types and is looking for some good seafood options.

 width=Name: Matthew Haas

Occupation: Editor

Where you work: Broad St., next to the NYSE

Age: 40

Favorite Kinds of Food: I love seafood, Middle Eastern and Latin cuisines.

Least Favorite Foods: Fast food burgers.

Favorite Lunches Downtown: I spotted a tiny lobster place while exploring the neighborhood when my office relocated in August.  I finally decided to treat myself to a good lunch there just the other day.  When I say tiny, I mean TINY.  Urban Lobster Shack on Stone St. (btw. Broad & Broadway) is smaller than a walk-in closet, but the lobster roll and bisque combo was great.

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: The Exchange Deli on Broadway (just south of Exchange).  The Exchange has a great variety of foods: Hot and cold sandwiches, salad bar, panini bar, pizza…prices are reasonable.

Places downtown you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch: Midtown Lunch is a new discovery for me.  I’m looking forward to it revealing some neighborhood secrets in the coming weeks.

Dream job location, purely for lunch purposes, and why: Isla Grande, RJ, Brazil… great food, AMAZING view.  If restricted to NYC: Washington Heights – best Latin food in the city.  The smaller and more unassuming the restaurant, the better the food tends to be.

Anything you’d like to ask the downtown Midtown Lunch readers?: Where is the best seafood downtown?

It depends on whether you like your seafood fried or not. I like the fish at the $5 Lunch Truck, and there are still two locations of Terrace Fish & Chips left to fulfill pretty much any seafood craving. And as always, if you would like to be next week’s Profiled Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate), email us at downtownnyc@midtownlunch.com.

  • Sea World (nr. Church and Canal) is on my to-do list for fried seafood. I ate Fish Over Rice from the Halal Cart at Greenwich and Beach and the salmon was surprisingly decent (not to mention cheap for $5 and humongously portioned).
