PROFILE: Downtown Lunch’er “Nick”
As is customary here on Midtown Lunch, every Tuesday we’ll profile a different lunch’er and get their recommendations for places to eat in Downtown NYC. This week, we have Nick Horman, who knows a thing or two about pickles and favors the Lower East Side and Village for his lunches.
Name: Nicholas Horman, aka Nicky Pickles
Occupation: Owner of a small pickle company
Where you work: Horman’s Best Pickles, Carmine St. & 6th Ave.
Age: 27
Favorite Kinds of Food: Falafel, lobster rolls, Indian, burgers, anything pickled, Korean BBQ
Least Favorite Foods: Cheap pizza, fast food
Favorite Lunches Downtown: Luke’s Lobster (Multiple Locations) for the lobster roll, The Blind Tiger Ale House on Bleecker St. (at Jones) for the apple bacon cheddar melt (served with my pickles) and Veselka on 2nd Ave. (at 9th St.)
The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: The Grey Dog’s Coffee (Multiple Locations)
Places downtown you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch: Tio Pio West on 36th St. (btw. 5th & 6th Ave.)
Dream job location, purely for lunch purposes, and why: The Lower East Side for places like Frankies Spuntino on Clinton St. (btw. Avenue B & Houston). It’s an intimate setting, sporting good folk music like the Grateful Dead, and original Italian dishes – Love the sage butter sausage pasta dish, and they have best creme brulee I’ve ever had.
Anything you’d like to ask the downtown Midtown Lunch readers?: What’s your favorite pickle? If you could come back to life after death as any pickle variety, what kind would it be and why?
I don’t know about you guys, but pretty much any pickle is OK with me. I’m even down with the controversial bread and butter variety and certainly wouldn’t turn down a nice dill spear straight from the jar. And as always, if you would like to be next week’s Profiled Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate), email us at downtownnyc@midtownlunch.com.

The best pickle juice I’ve ever had so far is McClure’s (I don’t know which kind, either the spicy or the garlic dill). F-ing good. I haven’t tried Brooklyn Pickle or Rick’s Picks though.
I prefer a sour pickle over a salty one.
