Two weeks ago today, 30+ brave Midtown Lunch’ers gathered in Bryant Park with 34 plates of chicken and lamb over rice with white sauce and hot sauce from 17 different carts and food trucks. The goal? Crown the street meat champion of Midtown. In 2008, The Famous Halal Guys’ daytime cart (parked on the SE Corner of 53rd and 6th) took home the inaugural Street Meat Palooza crown- silencing critics who have called the ultra popular cart bland and overrated. A year later, the equally popular Kwik Meal cart (on 45th and 6th) had its revenge at Street Meat Palooza 2. And last year Kwik Gourmet showed that they will play second fiddle to nobody. This year, all three champs were retired in order to give somebody else a chance to shine.

Algorithms were developed, votes were counted, numbers have been crunched and now it’s time to reveal the results…

17. Mr. Khan’s Best Food

Location: NE Corner of 45th & 6th Ave.
Price: $6
Last Year’s Rank: 8th

Two years ago Mr Khan’s was shredded in SMP2 when a piece cardboard was discovered in their plate of street meat. Last year they bounced back, but this year they find themselves in dead last again. ”Disgusting” and “yuck” were both used to describe the “mushy rice” that tasted like street meat from a “school cafeteria”. And nobody seemed to agree on whether or not finding broccoli in your street meat is a good thing or a bad thing.

16. Kabab Express

Location: SE Corner of 55th & 6th Ave.
Price: $5
Last Year’s Rank: 13

This cart was back in the news recently when Omar from Little Morocco popped up to help them out for a bit. Sadly, by the time SMP4 happened Omar was already gone and they couldn’t improve on last year’s poor performance. French fries were a plus, but some complained that they were soggy. Keyword overall = bland.

15. Tazy Halal Food

Location: 44th btw. 2+3rd Ave. North Side of the Street
Price: $5
Last Year’s Rank: N/A

Last month Donny discovered this cart, and thought it could be a dark horse for SMP4, so we threw them in there. There were a few fans of its cinnamon flavor and all the add ons (french fries, falafel, onions and possibly cabbage?), but it wasn’t enough to get them out of the bottom third.

14. King Tut

Location: NW Corner of 52nd & Lex
Price: $5
Last Year’s Rank: N/A

Not sure if this cart is related to the King Tut who came in 10th in the very first Street Meat Palooza, but the platters look pretty similar, and so does the outcome. There were a few fans of the “buttery” flavor, but most people complained that the hot sauce was too tame.

13. Times Halal

Location: NE Corner of 40th Street & 8th Ave.
Price: $5
Last Year’s Rank: N/A

This is the first Palooza for this cart, which took its name from the business it’s parked in front of. One judge called it their favorite, but most people called it mediocre.

12. XPL Halal Food

Location: NW Corner of 48th & Park
Price: $5
Last Year’s Rank: 3

Always the bridesmaid, never the bride… 3 years ago this truck scored 2nd place in the very first Street Meat Palooza. It was the out of nowhere surprise we were hoping to find when we started doing this. Since then they’ve hovered around the top, but this year saw them drop to 12th! There were a few positive comments about the interesting spices and the delicious basmati rice, but overall it didn’t have the same impact it once did.

11. Gyro Press

Location: 40th btw. Mad+5th
Price: $5
Last Year’s Rank: N/A

Some people liked the chickpeas and red bell peppers in this plate of street meat, and there was more than one comment about the random fennel flavor. But it wasn’t enough to crack the top 10 for this new SMP entry.

10. Faith’s Halal Food

Location: 33rd btw. 7+8th
Price: $5
Last Year’s Rank: N/A

If you don’t like peppers and onions you’ll probably want to skip this cart, which just edged out Gyro Press in the voting to crack the Top 10. Interestingly enough, they might use the same orange rice as the Famous Halal Guys, but that’s where the comparisons end with this street meat.

9. Rafiqi’s

Location: NE Corner of Park & 52nd
Price: $6
Last Year’s Rank: N/A

After a two year absence, Rafiqi’s returned to SMP hoping to improve on their 12th place finish the very first year. They won the prize for most toppings, sporting chick peas, black beans, corn and even black olives which turned out to be wildly controversial. Half the judges said yay, half said nay. What does that add up to? Middle of the pack.

8. Trini Paki Boys

Location: SE Corner of 43rd & 6th Ave.
Price: $6
Last Year’s Rank: 11th

This long time favorite was finally nominated for a Vendy Award this year, but they still can’t seem to the break the code of Street Meat Palooza. With Pakistani spices and a Trinidadian hot sauce the flavor is unique, making this street meat a love it or hate it situation.

7. Halal Cart

Location: 66 W 35th, between 5th and 6th
Price: $5
Last Year’s Rank: N/A

Ultraclay discovered this cart back in June, notable for their technique of adding the white sauce and hot sauce to the meat while it’s still cooking on the grill. Clearly it makes a difference, because these guys placed a very respectable 7th in their very first Palooza. A number of the judges noted that the yellow rice in particular was a real stand out.

6. Famous Halal Guys Cart on 52nd

Location: NW Corner of 52nd & 6th Ave.
Price: $6
Last Year’s Rank: 5

The Famous Halal Guys cart on the SW corner of 53rd & 6th won the very first Street Meat Palooza, leaving their other cart (on 52nd & 6th) to carry the banner year after year in Street Meat Palooza. Their orange rice is some of the best you can get on the streets of Midtown, and the hot sauce is without a doubt the hottest- but amazingly enough, for the second year in a row they were beaten out by…

5. New York’s Best Halal Food

Location: NW Corner of 53rd & 6th
Price: $6
Last Year’s Rank: 2nd

Aka “The Imposter Cart”. These are the guys who park on the SW Corner of 53rd & 6th during the day, but are replaced by the Famous Halal Cart at night. So in order to capitalize on the popularity of the famous cart they’ve created a pretty spot on imitation. And imitation that (clearly) some people find better than the original!

4. Fahima Halal

Location: 45th & 6th
Price: $8
Last Year’s Rank: 7th

Speaking of copy cats, with Kwik Meal and Kwik Gourmet ineligible to compete because of their victories in SMPs 2 & 3, Fahima Halal filled in. The owner of Fahima is the brother of Muhammed Rahman- owner of the Kwik Meal Carts- and as you can tell just from looking at the plate of food he learned everything he knows from his brother. Real chunks of lamb. A tzatziki-like white sauce. The same plastic containers. And the same green hot sauce. He even parks right next to his brother. But obviously there is something missing… because even though it was good enough to land Fahima in 4th place it wasn’t good enough to keep the Kwik Meal victory streak alive.

3. No Name Cart

Location: NE Corner of 40th & 3rd
Price: $5
Last Year’s Rank: N/A

Every year Street Meat Palooza produces one big surprise. One cart always ends up doing way better than you expect, and this year it was this no name cart on 40th & 3rd. A number of judges commented on the great smokey flavor of the charred meat, with one going so far as to say that he would murder somebody if this cart didn’t make it into the top 5. Luckily nobody will have to be murdered this year.

2. Uncle Gussy’s

Location: SE Corner of 51st & Park
Price: $5
Last Year’s Rank: 12th

I have to say, Uncle Gussy’s coming in 12th last year was a huge shock. Considering how popular this truck is, 2nd place makes way more sense. A lot of the judges loved the big chunks of meat, and the clean simple flavors. In fact if it wasn’t for the rice (which a number of people complained about) they probably would have taken the top prize.

1. Comme Ci Comme Ca

Location: 36th & Broadway on Tuesday, Thursdays, & Fridays. 52nd & Park on Wednesdays.
Price: $9
Last Year’s Rank: N/A

I know there will be some who cry foul about this year’s winner. They have merguez instead of lamb. The $9 price tag makes it the most expensive plate of food in the competition. And the chicken & merguez over rice combo isn’t even technically on the menu. (You’ve got to ask for it special.) But it’s got white sauce and hot sauce on it. And it’s over rice. And it got the most 1st place votes of any plate of food in the competition. The scores were super close, but in the end this Mediterranean take on NYC street meat edged out the competition.

So, there it is. Another Palooza is in the books. Agree? Disagree? Was your favorite not not even in there? Feel free to sound off in the comments. Because we’re only 364 days away from Street Meat Palooza 5, when a new plate of chicken and lamb over rice will be crowned Street Meat Champion of Midtown.

A quick thank you… to all of the Midtown Lunch’ers who nominated the carts, picked up the food, and judged the competition. Sampling 17 plates of street meat is a lot harder than you would think, and we’re thankful they all sacrificed their bodies for the cause. Also, thanks to all the vendors for doing what they do. None of them knew this competition was going on, and even though we crowned a winner, everybody is a winner in my eyes! If anything Street Meat Palooza isn’t really about winning or losing. It’s about showing how unique and different every single plate of chicken and lamb over rice is, a fact that become infinitely more apparent when 17 of them are eaten side by side. Until next year!

PAST RESULTS: Street Meat Palooza 1 | 2 | 3

The event is closed to the public, and the only way to score an invite is to nominate your favorite plate of street in Midtown. The nominations close tonight at 6pm, and the winners will be chosen before the end of the week. And remember, you can’t bitch about the finalists if you don’t bother nominating your favorite.

You didn’t think we forgot about Street Meat Palooza, did you? Now that the dust has finally settled on Midtown Lunch’s 5th Anniversary, it’s time to crown Midtown’s best street meat. Every year we bring together a hand picked group of lunchers to taste 15 different plates of street meat, and crown a winner. Three years ago the Famous Halal Guys won the inaugural palooza, but the next two years belonged to Kwik Meal and Kwik Gourmet. All three have been retired from competition, and this year 15 new carts will vie for the chance to be crowned the winner of Street Meat Palooza 4!

Just like previous years, Street Meat Palooza will not be open to the public. It is an invite only, blind tasting of 15 different plates of street meat. But there is a way for you to win a coveted slot at the “judges” table.

Want a chance to attend? All you have to do is nominate your favorite street meat cart in the comments and you’re registered to score a slot at Street Meat Palooza 4. But there are a few rules so please read them closely:

1. Street meat = chicken and lamb over rice with white sauce and hot sauce. Not jerk chicken. Not biriyani. Not schnitzel. Not tikka masala. It doesn’t have to necessarily be “halal” but it does have to be chicken and/or lamb over rice with white sauce and hot sauce. It’s also worth noting, the carts won’t know they’re competing. The plates of street meat will be ordered on a regular day during lunchtime, each by a different Midtown Luncher.

2. Participating in previous years doesn’t exclude a cart or truck from being nominated for SMP 3, but winning does. So Kwik Meal (on 45th and 6th), Kwik Gourmet (on 47th & Park), and the Famous Halal Guys cart (on the SE Corner of 53rd and 6th) will be ineligible to compete this year. But their other carts are eligible… so the Famous Halal Guys cart on 52nd and 6th is still eligible.

3. Limit one comment per person, but feel free to nominate as many vendors as you wish in that one comment. The more votes a cart gets, the more likely it will be chosen to participate. Carts must be located within the Midtown Lunch’ing boundaries… that’s 8th Ave. to the West, 3rd Ave. to the East, Central Park to the North, and 32nd to the South.

4. If you are chosen to attend the event, you may be asked to bring the food from the cart that you nominated. (We’ll pay you back, of course!)

5. Nominations will close on Wednesday (9/14) at 6pm EST and the invites will be sent out a few days later. The judging will take place sometime in September, from noon to 1:30pm at a central location in Midtown that will only be revealed to the participants.

Good luck!

Not just at the party, where we will have tons of “presents” to hand out to you (oh, like, a $50 gift certificate to Schnitzel & Things), but also in the weeks leading up to the party as well. And to get things started we figured we’d give away something that money can’t buy… a slot on the judging panel for Street Meat Palooza 4! If you have been a ML reader for awhile you know that every summer we hold an exclusive street meat taste off, where one plate of chicken and lamb over rice with hot sauce and white sauce is crowned champion by a select group of Midtown Lunch friends and readers. It’s not open to the public, but we’re going to give away a judging slot this week. All you have to do to be entered to win is buy your Midtown Lunch 5th Anniversary Party ticket before this Sunday (5/15) at 11:59pm. Every ticket you buy counts for one entry… so 1 ticket gets you one entry, 2 tickets gets you 2 entries, 10 tickets… hell… if you buy ten tickets we’ll just give you an automatic invite to SMP4! If you’ve already bought your ticket, you’re already entered (for this, and all the contests to follow.) If you haven’t… seriously, what are you waiting for? It’s going to be a great party, and it’s for a great cause. Buy your tickets here>>

2 years ago, a group of trailblazing Midtown Lunch’ers converged on Bryant Park with 13 plates of chicken and lamb over rice with white sauce and hot sauce from 13 different Midtown vendors. The goal? Crown a street meat champion of Midtown Manhattan, the undisputed chicken and lamb over rice capital of the world. If you’ve ever been to New York City, you can’t help but notice the street meat. A mix of Middle Eastern tradition, with cabbie induced street vendor ingenuity, it’s a lunch you won’t find in any other city in the world. The captivating smell will draw you in, and the taste doesn’t disappoint. And while street meat neophytes will make the mistake of thinking that most carts serve pretty much the same dish, eating 15 different plates of street side by side instantly destroys that notion.

This year, both champions were retired in order to give somebody else a chance to shine- and 3 weeks ago 40 Midtown Lunch’ers converged on Bryant Park for a blind taste test of 15 different plates of chicken and lamb over rice with white sauce and hot sauce- all nominated by you.

The ballots were then sent to an accounting firm (not true) to be meticulously tallied and analyzed (that part is true) and the results are in…

15. Little Morocco

Price: $5
Last Year’s Rank: N/A

That’s right… kicking things off with a big shocker. My favorite new cart from the past year, and it comes in last place. It’s not entirely without controversy though. One of the best parts about the Little Morocco cart is that they usually add all sorts of random stuff. French fries. Falafel. Beans. It’s a total garbage plate of epic proportions. And yet on this day, there were no add ons. Clearly they couldn’t have picked a worse day to skimp… some of the eaters had good things to say about their always delicious harissa hot sauce- but it wasn’t enough to save them from being on the bottom. Read more about Little Morocco here>>

It’s official… Midtown Lunchers don’t like vegetables in their street meat! Ok, so that’s not entirely true. Some judges liked the veggies, and a few others liked the large chunks of gyro, and char-grilled chicken. But it was one of the few carts that nobody singled out as a favorite- so it ended up in second to last place. (Although in a Greek Salad w/ Grilled Chicken Palooza it would easily be the champ!) Read more about 100% Halal & Healthy here>>

13. Kebab Express

Back in January Lunch’er Matt put Kebab Express on the map, earning it a guaranteed spot in SMP3. They’re known more for their kebabs than their street meat, but the judges seemed to like the falafel and french fries that somehow found their way onto the plate. Sadly, it couldn’t save a plate that most judges felt was pretty mediocre flavor wise. Read more about Kebab Express here>>

12. Uncle Gussy’s

Uncle Gussy’s cart has its fans, but sadly the judges were not down with the “bland rice” and flavorless meats. It did have two judges call it the best, but that wasn’t enough to pull them into the top 10.

11. Trini Paki Boys

Long considered one of the best street meat carts in Midtown, the Trini Paki Boys have never fared well in Street Meat Palooza. The first year they came in 7th, but it’s been a steady slide down since for them, falling two spots each year since. The curry flavor the dish gets from its Pakistani roots was completely polarizing, with half the panel loving it and half the panel hating it (along with the “mushy” rice.) Maybe it’s time for them to retire from competition, but they’ll always have a place in my heart as one of the best (and Ruth Reichl agrees.) Read more about the Trini Paki Boys cart here>>

10. Famous Falafel & Gyros

This newcomer came out of nowhere to have a fairly respectable showing. A number of the judges praised the flavor of the vegetable rice, but the real clincher for those who were fans was the jalapenos.

When Miss Softee declared that this was her favorite street meat cart in Midtown, we knew they had to be included in SMP3. (Granted she usually gets the gyro in pita, but whatever.) The keyword to this cart was salty. Across the board everyone agreed that it was really salty… but disagreed over whether it was or wasn’t too salty. I guess if you like the salt, you’ll want to check this cart out.

8. Mr. Khan’s

After last year’s SMP2 debacle (anybody like cardboard in their street meat?) Mr. Khan’s bounced back with an 8th place showing. Ironically some people found the texture to be a little off, and some also found this one to be a bit heavy on the salt, but the orange rice got a ton of complements.

7. Fahima Halal

If this plate looks similar to last year’s winner (Kwik Meal) there’s a good reason. Fahima Halal is run by a brother of Kwik Meal owner Muhammad Rahman. He originally worked on the Kwik Meal carts, before leaving to start Fahima… which he now parks right next to Kwik Meal (on 45th and 6th.) Family feud aside, clearly he learned a few things from working for his brother. The real lamb, and yogurt based white sauce was good enough to score 7th place- but eaten side by side you can tell it’s not as good as the original. Read more about Fahima Halal here>>

XPL was the surprise break out hit of the very first Street Meat Palooza, coming out of obscurity to score 2nd place. Since then they’ve dropped from year to year but 6th place is still respectable, and their street meat is still damn good. The chick peas were a new twist that everybody seemed to like, and their rice always gets high praise… but the interesting curry flavor turned off as many people as it excited UPDATE: Well, that explains the chick peas! Apparently this plate of food wasn’t from the XPL truck on 48th and Park, but the cart on 48th and 3rd. Read more about XPL here>>

5. Famous Halal Guys (fmr. Shendy’s)

Shendy’s came in 2nd place last year, but since then they were bought out by The Famous Halal Guys and are now serving the same exact food you get on 53rd and 6th (good yellow rice, super hot hot sauce, and very finely chopped meats.) The famous cart on the SE corner of 53rd and 6th won the very first Street Meat Palooza, so they were retired from competing this year- but their new cart held its own, coming in 5th. Read more about the Famous 53rd & 6th Ave. vendors here>>

Every year somebody comes out of nowhere to score higher than you would expect… the first year it was XPL. Last year it was the Steak Truck. And this year, that distinction goes to La Baguette. Our Happy Hour Correspondent Mamacita discovered this truck at the end of last year, and the judges have validated her impeccable taste in street meat. Read more about La Baguette here>>

We’ve always wondered if the XPL cart on 3rd Ave. was exactly the same as the XPL on Park, and it looks like the answer is no. They got similar overall scores, but twice as many people put this plate in their top 5 as the XPL on Park. One thing that is consistent? Everybody loves the curry flavored rice. Read more about XPL here>>

2. “Imposter” Halal Cart

So maybe I spoke too soon when I called La Baguette the shocker of Street Meat Palooza 3! For those who still haven’t gotten the memo, The Famous Halal Guys Cart with the super long lines doesn’t park on the SW corner of 53rd and 6th until after 7pm. During the day, an unaffiliated cart parks in that spot and has taken it upon themselves to completely emulate the Famous Halal Guys… and not just their clothes and packaging, but their flavor too. When I first tried this cart 3 years ago, there were noticeable differences between the daytime and nighttime carts. Now? Not so much. And even though word is out that the daytime cart is an “imposter”, a number of Midtown Lunchers have always claimed the imposer is better than the original. A 2nd place finish in SMP3 goes a long way to giving credibility to that theory…

1. Kwik Gourmet

Location: 47th & Park
Price: $7.50
Last Year’s Rank: N/A (Although Kwik Meal cart came in 1st)

Proving that last year was no fluke, Kwik Gourmet (the Kwik Meal offshoot that parks on 47th and Park) is the big winner of Street Meat Palooza 3. Kwik Meal was excluded from participating because they won last year, but this proves that maybe all the Kwik Meal carts *are* created equal. Just like last year, judges were all about the yogurt based white sauce, the green hot sauce, and of course the real chunks of lamb (as opposed to the gyro meat you get at most carts in Midtown.) It was a super close race between first and second, but Kwik Gourmet had the most first place votes out of any cart- putting them over the top.

So, there it is. Did your favorite not make the big dance? Let us know in the comments, because we’re only 364 days away from Street Meat Palooza 4, when a new plate of chicken and lamb over rice will be crowned Street Meat Champion of Midtown.

A quick thank you… to all of the Midtown Lunch’ers who nominated the carts, picked up the food, and judged the competition. Sampling 15 plates of street meat is a lot harder than you would think, and we’re thankful they all sacrificed their bodies for the cause. Also, thanks to all the vendors for doing what they do. None of them knew this competition was going on, and May 3rd was a pretty rainy day. And yet none of the nominated vendors failed to show up to work. These old school vendors work harder than you can imagine, most of them for shockingly little money, putting out cheap and delicious lunch every day. Their hard work directly paved the way for the street vending renaissance that is happening all over the country, and we should never forget it.

Why are you still reading this? It’s lunchtime! And I’ll bet I can guess what you’re in the mood for…

That right… it’s time.

For the past two years a select group of Midtown Lunch’ers have been chosen to converge on a single location to eat an ungodly amount of street meat, from 15 different carts in Midtown, and crown a winner. Two years ago, the Famous Halal Guys (on 53rd and 6th) took home the top prize, but last year they were unseeded by the Kwik Meal cart (on 45th & 6th). Both have been retired from competition, and this year 15 new carts will vie for the chance to be crowned the winner of Street Meat Palooza 3!

Just like previous years, Street Meat Palooza will not be open to the public. It is an invite only, blind tasting of 15 different plates of street meat. But there is a way for you to win a coveted slot at the “judges” table.

Want a chance to attend? All you have to do is nominate your favorite street meat cart in the comments and you’re registered to score a slot at Street Meat Palooza 3.

So Kwik Meal (on 45th and 6th) and the Famous Halal Guys cart (on the SE Corner of 53rd and 6th) will be ineligible to compete this year. But their other carts are eligible… so feel free to nominate the Kwik Gourmet cart (on 47th and Park) or the Famous Halal Guys cart on 52nd and 6th (formerly Shendy’s.)

5. Nominations will close on Friday (4/23) at 6pm EST and the invites will be sent out at the beginning of next week. The judging will take place sometime in May, from noon to 1:30pm at a central location in Midtown that will only be revealed to the participants.

Good luck!
