Good news for Red Mango fans! The K-town outpost located inside Food Gallery 32 is now open for business. However, this Red Mango represents a complete shift from the traditional fro-yo format and pricing program, going the DIY/pay what it weighs route instead. Customers choose a cup size and pull their own fro-yo from an impressive line-up of flavors. They’ve kept their original formula on hand, but have added pomegranate, dulce de leche, black cherry, vanilla, melon, lemon, and pineapple flavors, and hinted at additional varieties coming soon.

The toppings are now located at a self-serve fixings bar, which is good news for people (like myself) that yearn for an extra heavy sprinkle of mochi or strawberries, without having to fork over additional cash for an extra dose of toppings. Finally, proceed to the Red Mango checkout counter (which is separate from Food Gallery’s main registers) and pay $.49 per ounce of pro-biotic goodness.

Not sure if they plan to roll this out at all the Red Mango locations, but the variety of yogurt flavors and the ability to freely express yourself with the toppings make this a winner in my book. Finally, the $.49/oz price is more than fair – my mochi and fruit loaded creation pictured above? About 3 bucks and change.

I don’t know if any amount of money could get me to willingly enter the NBC Experience store inside 30 Rock, but froyo fans will be excited for this news. Red Mango has opened inside the small cafe on the second floor. So now you have two options for your Midtown Red Mango fix. Walk to the location on 8th Ave and 45th, or fight your way through hordes of tourists waiting in line for the NBC Studio Tour. Good luck and Godspeed. (Thanks to Lunch’er Lila for the tip.)

Midtown fro-yo fans will be bummed about this one. Lunch’er “Myra” reports: “Red Mango on 8th Ave (btw. 45+46th) had a yellow Marshal’s Notice on the door, and 2 employees standing there a bit puzzled.” Confirmed by the photo above, the store was still closed as of 1:30pm (and nobody was picking up the phone as of 2:15pm.) According to one of the employees on the scene, it’s because of a dispute between the owner of Red Mango and the landlord who owns the building. He assured me they would reopen (and added “maybe even today”.) It hasn’t effected any of the other Midtown locations… the one on 3rd Ave. and 34th is still open as is the Koreatown location (who knew nothing about the problems with the 8th Ave. location.)

Update in the Comments: As of 4:30 they have reopened

A close up of the notice is after the jump…

And it has been proven in a study that yogurt cultures, mixed with peanut butter cereal, will help aid in the digestion of red meat and cheese. You can’t argue with science.*

From Eater (via FatWallet)

Another day, another fro-yo opening, another promise of free goods. Today a Red Mango opens on 45th and 8th Ave., and promises to give away their goods from 3-10pm.

My track record with free frozen yogurt is not that great, but this one seems legit. A phone call to the location confirmed that the new Red Mango will be giving away the small size frozen yogurt with one topping. 723 8th Ave. (btw. 45+46th). Enjoy!

Update: It’s pretty cold out for fro-yo, but it was free so how could I resist. See what ”free” should really get you, after the jump…

Now that’s a free cup of yogurt! I went with the green tea (you have a choice between green tea or plain) and had trouble picking out my free topping, until the guy behind the register uttered these magic words: “Green Tea tastes really good with Cap’n Crunch.” Well that’s all I needed to hear. I have managed to avoid Pinkberry, so I don’t have a real basis for comparison. It has the same consistency as soft serve frozen yogurt, but you can actually taste that it is made from yogurt. And yes, green tea does taste excellent with Cap’n Crunch. Charge me $5, and I might not be as enthusiastic, but for free it was pretty damn tasty.
