Last time I ate at the Eggs Travaganza cart (which was also my first time) I really wanted the steak and egg taco. Sadly, by the time I got to the cart, they had already sold out of the tortillas to make tacos. I accepted their offer to make the steak and egg in a burrito form. While I had imagined the egg in the burrito to be at least visible, all I saw were steak and rice. I did find the burrito delicious, so the lack of eggs didn’t end up being a big deal.

On my second trip back to the cart, I made sure to go early (1 p.m.), and I was rewarded with the steak and egg taco ($4).

Ah steak and egg taco. Now this is what I was expecting to see: chunks of scrambled eggs. The taco was delicious, just like the burrito. The chunks of steak were a little tough, but they were small enough to not be a big deal. As for the eggs, they had absorbed some of the beefy flavors and were really good. I also enjoyed the crispiness of the tortillas, which added an extra crunch. $4 for a taco was a little pricey but definitely worth checking out.

I knew one taco wasn’t going to be enough, so I also got the three taco special for $7 (carne asada, chorizo and chicken). Eating the carne asada right after enjoying the steak and egg left me feeling like something was missing, but the egg definitely added extra texture and flavor to the tacos. I have to agree with Brownie that the chorizo taco was probably the best one out of the three. Also, only get four tacos if you’re REALLY hungry. I was not able to finish my lunch.

I expect to make many more trips to the Eggs Travaganza cart this season, especially because I have to get my hands on a grilled cheese with chorizo and bacon.

I’m a little embarrassed to admit that as a lover of all egg dishes I still haven’t been to the Eggs Travaganza cart. I know it’s not right, but in my defense it’s been pretty damn cold. So now that it’s full on Spring time, I have no more excuse to walk the two avenues eight blocks for some egg burrito action. When I found the cart on the corner of 52nd & Park Ave, it took me a while to go through the menu and it took me even longer to decide what to eat since everything sounded delicious. I was thinking maybe I’ll just grab a few tacos, steak and eggs naturally. Sadly they said they were out of tortillas for tacos but they could still make a steak and eggs burrito ($7). That to me sounded just fine.

My first reaction after opening the box was “where are the eggs?” I was imagining fluffy scrambled eggs inside the burrito but I didn’t see any. Then I thought maybe I ordered just a steak burrito? Or maybe the eggs were fully cooked into the steak and rice mixture so that I couldn’t see them? Fluffy eggs or no fluffy eggs, after taking a big bite of the burrito I quickly forgotten about the issue. Wow this was one delicious burrito. The tender chunks of steak were flavorful plus the rice really made the burrito great. I can taste why everyone loves this cart. I especially love how causally the lady dumped a bunch of potato chips into the box.

I’m still a little disappointed with not seeing any fluffy eggs in the burrito. Of course that only means that I will have to make a return trip to the cart, order the same burrito and compare (you know just to make sure). Also next time I will go early enough to secure some tacos and maybe a tasty grilled cheese chorizo sandwich.

As if I needed more reasons to stalk the ML Twitter Tracker (hopefully it will be fixed soon!), this week it brought me news of several new lunch menu items from the Eggs Travaganza Cart (on 52nd and Park). These are the same folks that brought me that de-freaking-licious Bacon and Chorizo Grilled Cheese sandwich, so naturally I had to check it out.

New lunch items include tacos–chicken, carne asada, and chorizo, burritos, and quesadillas. I’m a late luncher and by the time I hit up the cart at 1:45 yesterday they were already out of the carne asada. I scored a chicken and chorizo taco ($2.50 each) and a $5 Mexican Wrap (eggs, cheese, home fries, chorizo, pepper, onions and hot sauce).

The tacos were very tasty. I hate when you order tacos and they fall apart before you have a chance to dig in. These corn tortillas held up to the ample filling. Spice fans will appreciate that the hot sauce on the tacos and Mexican wrap was on the picante side. The chicken was good, but the chorizo was even better (not surprising, since it does come from the magical beast). Light to moderate lunchers should be satisfied with two tacos as they did have a generous amount of filling. I would order these again.

Blondie was stuck at her desk yesterday so I brought her a Mexican wrap for lunch. The flour tortilla held up well in transit. For those of you who like breakfast for lunch, this wrap hits all the breakfast highlights (eggs: check, cheese: check, potatoes: check, meat: check– no, check plus for use of chorizo). Whenever I see eggs listed in a wrap, I just kind of assume that they will be scrambled, but these were fried “over well” with fully cooked centers. I know people can be particular about their egg preparations–in my family the “over medium” vs “over well” feud is strong, so just be aware when ordering.

I didn’t get the “Mexican Grilled Cheese” special that they tweeted about yesterday, though I was sorely tempted. From the sounds of it, the Mexican Grilled Cheese has the components of the Bacon, Tomato, and Chorizo Grilled Cheese sandwich with the addition of pickled jalapeños. When I tried their regular Bacon, Tomato, and Chorizo Grilled Cheese sandwich back in May, I said “The only thing that would have made me happier would be the addition of a pickle on the side.” I can’t wait to go back and try it with the pickled jalapeños.

You can expect more to come from Eggs Travaganza. The owner told me that he’s working on perfecting a recipe for al pastor. Here’s what I would love to see on the menu… breakfast tacos. On my one and only trip to Texas last year, I could not get enough of the cheap and tasty breakfast tacos that I encountered there and I haven’t been able to find a worthy substitute in midtown. Perhaps the Eggs Travaganza cart is up for the challenge…

Speaking of challenge… Mamacita, you up for trying Eggs Travaganza with me to see how they rate in terms of authenticity?

Grilled cheese with tomato holds a nostalgic place in my lunchtime heart–it was my tried and true high school cafeteria lunch option and the only good thing that our cafeteria made with the exception of fried dough pizza (yes, in my school district fried dough pizza somehow got the pass as a “nutritious meal”). When I first read about the Eggs Travaganza Cart’s new lunch time offerings, my attention went straight to the Grilled Cheese with Chorizo, Tomato and Bacon. Hello, lunch!

The Grilled Cheese with Chorizo, Tomato and Bacon at the Eggs Travaganza Cart goes for $5 –which at first blush might seem a bit expensive for a grilled cheese from a cart, but this sandwich might be more aptly named a “grilled chorizo and bacon sandwich with cheese and tomato” on account of the generous meaty filling and the price tag includes chips. A similar sandwich with bacon OR tomato and minus chorizo and chips goes for $4.50 at my local generic deli, Variety Cafe.

The sandwich came on a multi-grain bread that flavorwise kind of reminded me of challah with it’s hint of a light sweetness–an inspired sandwich base for those of us who like sweet and salty combos. Chorizo plus bacon plus melty cheese equals lunch bliss in my book. The only thing that would have made me happier would be the addition of a pickle on the side. This is definitely a grilled cheese that I will make a return trip for.

Given that most carts have grills, I’ve always been surprised that more of them don’t offer grilled cheese as an option. It’s easy to make, people like it, and it seems like it could be a high margin sort of product–especially for a cart like say Frites N Meats that carries plenty of fancy cheeses and buns and extras and doesn’t offer vegetarian options. Now that Eggs Travaganza has fulfilled my grilled cheese from a cart fantasy, I’m now on the hunt for a cart that serves onion rings. Along those lines, luncher Apikoros18 has a great recently revived thread going in the forums called: I wish they served it from a Cart in Midtown.

Good news, bacon, breakfast, and burrito lovers! As first reported by Lunch’er “Masto”, Eggs Travaganza (on NE corner of 52nd+Park) is now open for lunch til 2PM every weekday. The bacon-wrapped Cholula Dog screamed at us from the computer monitor saying “Pick me, pick me!” so, as a girl who follows her bacon-wrapped heart, I made a beeline for Eggs Travaganza to check it out. More than just bacon after the jump…

Holy moly. If I’m gonna have a breakfast burrito for lunch, it better have fried eggs, chorizo, and potatoes wrapped inside, just like this one. For $5, it’s hard to beat, I think.

Well, the Cholula Dog tried to give the Mexican wrap a run for its money, but fell a bit short because it was weighed down by bun! The bacon might make it a bit too salty for some, but I can vouch for the superior sausage that was wrapped in it. It’s a damn good hot dog, sharing real estate with refried beans, onions, tomatoes, mayo, mustard, and a touch of spicy green salsa in a loaf of bread.

Still, it was just Day 1 of lunch service when I got there. Maribel and Arturo are open to suggestions on how to improve the menu and to offer what lunch’ers want, so feel free to tell them what you like and dislike! I’m totally going back to try the Cholula Dog again. For $4, it still beats all the other hot dogs in Midtown.

Lunch’er “Masto” is on a roll! Yesterday he sent in the first look at Cer Te’s new Mr. Potato Skin sandwich, and today he sends along this great news. Remember the Eggs Travaganza Cart (the breakfast only cart on 52nd and Park that Serious Eats wrote about back in July?) Apparently they are now open for lunch…

I stopped by the Eggs Travaganza cart on 52nd and Park for my favorite Mexican breakfast wrap when I discovered they had put out a sign with some lunch offerings. I asked Maribel and Arturo about it and they confirmed that they are indeed open for lunch. They gave me a sneak peek at the lunch menu just for Midtown Lunch, photo attached.

They said they’ll be adding more items, such as quesadillas, over time. Also of interest, their cart was moved a space back from where it normally is, swapped with the Rafiqi’s cart that sets up next to them.. the same cart that, according to previous ML articles, forced them to only serve breakfast. Apparently this lunch thing has caused Rafiqi’s to go into territorial mode, and they haven’t actually left the corner since Friday in order to defend their turf. Hopefully there won’t be any ugly incidents and they’ll work it out. The Eggs Travaganza folks are super friendly and have a very loyal following.

Grilled cheese!? Bacon wrapped hot dogs!? Oh my… this could be good.
