At the beginning of the month we reported that Danku, the Dutch/Indonesian fast food craziness on 57th btw. 5+6th, was closing to revamp their menu and concept. Not so says Lunch’er Ben, who forwarded along this photo and email:

Hey Zach, Long time reader and Danku hater here. I walked by Danku this morning and there were forms taped to the door. Upon inspection it turns out they are eviction notices for non-payment of rent. Hallelujah! Not only were they total shit merchants, but also liars (Remodeling and reopening in February??Right.) Anyway, our long midtown lunch nightmare is over. I’m counting the days till Baja Fresh rolls in. -Ben

I don’t take joy in watching anybody lose their business, and clearly Danku could still end up resolving their issues and reopening (we’ve seen Old Bridge Deli do it time and time again.) But it’s not looking good. And maybe a Baja Fresh would be nice… but you know what would be nicer? A fast food restaurant that serves *good* Indonesian food. Come on Danku, make it happen!

Lunch’er Sean sends in this (not surprising) news about Danku, the Dutch/Indonesian fast food chain on 57th and 5+6th: “I walked past Danku over the weekend and noticed that they were papered up and had a sign saying that they were renovating and revamping their menu for a Feb. 2010 reopening. I know everyone (including myself) found their food to be somewhat underwhelming, but it’s still nice to have a range of options in the area. Here’s hoping that the improvements are for the best!” Indeed. I’m a huge fan of Indonesian food, and was always hoping that Danku would find a way to make it work. I guess we’ll see what kind of changes they make…

You all know how I feel about Danku (and I know how you feel.) I love Indonesian food, and had incredibly high hopes for this new chain. But despite a few decent dishes, overall it was a pretty big letdown. Could this be the thing that turns it around?

Strangely enough, I was walking by Danku weeks a few weeks ago and they were handing out free samples of these stroopwafels… so I was a little surprised to read that they were “introducing” them today for Queen’s Day. (Maybe they were just “testing” them? Or maybe I was imagining things… because PR people never lie. Today is the day! Get excited!) Either way, the free sample I tried was pretty delicious… so if you’re into this kind of thing, I would definitely recommend checking it out.
I thought I was probably never going to have to go back to Danku, the Dutch/Indonesian fast food place on 57th btw. 5+6th, until last week when I read about their latest creation: the Indonesian Sloppy Joe. Oh boy. Luckily Lunch’er Adam P. took the bullet for all of us, and sent in some photos and a report.

So I went to Danku to try out the Indonesian “Sloppy Joe”. The sandwich sells for $5, but you can get a combo with “Organic Fries” for $7.50, though I opted for the solo Joe and got 2 krokets on the side instead of fries. I was disappointed to find they dropped the Mac&Cheese krokets from the menu (no, really), so I had the Spinach&Artichoke krokets instead.

The sandwich is exactly what I expected from the description of an “Indonesian Sloppy Joe”, and unfortunately it was exactly what I expected in a sandwich from Danku.

The “Joe” filling is a marinated, sweet, and mildly spiced chopped (not ground) beef mixture that was a little too watery rather than saucy, so it dripped out into the container and pooled while eating it. If you want to try one, make sure to get some utensils from the back area (I forgot) as none are provided in the takeout bag since a good quarter of the mix will fall out like any good “Joe”. Also, the filling was served room temperature, rather than piping hot like a proper Joe. I would think the heat would have helped with the spiciness. The filling is served on a wheat “baguette” that is like a slightly larger hot dog roll and much smaller than a grinder roll (bit similar in style). Unfortunately the roll tasted like the plastic bag it was stored and shipped in, so I was quite disappointed as I couldn’t ignore this plastic taste while trying to eat the sandwich. Aside from that, the filling was tasty, but mediocre. Somehow I thought I was going to walk away thinking “wow”. (I guess I expected something like Keema Mottir on a roll).

As you’ve said to describe other sandwiches, this sandwich is not for hearty appetites (or as you’ve said, “Not for a fat man like me”). There certainly was no “wow” factor (though I’d wager that keeping the filling hot would improve that ten-fold), and for the price I’d rather go to Certe (they really know how to make a ‘midtown lunch’ sandwich), as you can finish one of their sandwiches and be satisfied. You can spend about as much on two dirty water dogs and be equally as satisfied. -Adam P.

Hmmmm. Surprisingly that may not be enough to keep me away…

I had a couple of stupid titles ready and waiting for my post about Danku, the new Dutch/Indonesian fast food place on 57th btw. 5+6th. I narrowed it down to “Danku But No Danku” and “Danku Shame”, but sadly it looks like I won’t get to use them. Is Danku good? No. But it’s also not so bad that I feel the need to publicly humiliate them on the site. How good or bad it is will also depend on who you ask, and what you order. After my first visit to Danku, on their opening day, yielded pretty terrible results, I decided to step back and give them some breathing room. Let them work out the kinks before returning to give them their full +/-.

Well, 6 weeks is plenty of time and last week I returned with a serious group of Midtown Lunchers, waiting to pass judgement on this new fast food chain: Danny from Food in Mouth, Blondie and Brownie (from the blog of the same name) and Bartender Extraordinaire Don Lee. I was actually surprised Don was willing to come, since he accompanied me on the first trip to Danku- and was less than thrilled with his decision.

We were able to try most of the menu, but with eaters like this Danku would have to bring their A game… and I’m not sure they were up to the challenge.

Unlike my four dining companions, who were pretty ruthless in their judgements, I am a little more forgiving when it comes to new concepts that I want to be good. After almost 3 years of Midtown Lunch’ing you realize that very few lunch options in Midtown are beyond criticism, so it’s not about being super critical- it’s about deciding whether or not this is a worthy lunchtime option… especially when compared to Chipotle or Metro Cafe.

Now, I love Indonesian food… but I wasn’t delusional enough to expect great, authentic Indonesian food. I was just hoping it would be the Indonesian equivalent of, say, Panda Express. Tasty and cheap, with a hint of Indonesian flavor tossed in. Mostly I was hoping that their fried noodles would be to mie goreng, what Panda Express’ lo mein is to a good sauteed noodle dish at a nice Chinese restaurant. First visit was a huge disappointment. The super mushy consistency was terrible, and it had absolutely no flavor. But on the second visit, I noticed that they had switched noodle type and added a little fried garnish (an authentic Indonesian flourish.) Notice the change for yourself:

Notice a few things here… Not only did they changed the noodles to a thicker cut (clearly they realized the original noodles were garbage), but they also changed the chicken satay (which we kind of knew was in the works). The original chicken was about as dry as could be, and pretty flavorless as well. The new chicken, while also a little bit dry, was a huge improvement. The final touch, and possibly the best of all, was the new addition of shrimp crackers- a standard accompaniment for all Indonesian food. They were the best part of the whole plate. (The noodles are still pretty terrible. Slightly better consistency, but they just don’t taste good.)

The sweet soy beef went through a bit of a transformation as well. In the original visit, the sauce had a really weird, gloppy consistency. It’s a little better now (but still not great.) The meat was tender, and the taste was decent but nothing to get super excited about (think food court quality.) The green curry chicken was about the same, although a little bit more dry (because it was chicken.) I could definitely detect the flavor of lemongrass, which is a positive. Again… the shrimp crackers and edamame were a welcomed addition.

Now onto the krokets:

Of all the comments the original Danku post got, the favorable ones all centered around the krokets- which are essentially fried pockets of goop. How can that be bad, right? Well- I’ll tell you how that could be bad… if you’re expecting solid food matter to be in your fried stick of goodness. In other words, krokets are fried goop. If the thought of eating fried goop is not exciting to you (like it is to some of us) then you will probably not like the krokets at Danku. It’s just the way it is.

Each of the krokets comes with its own dipping sauce (fun!) and we pretty much tried every single one. They are the one thing that appeared unchanged from the original visit, and I think the consensus was that the chicken curry kroket was the least offensive.

That’s the mac and cheese in the middle. Photo by Blondie and Brownie.

The mac and cheese kroket (which we were all very excited for) was fine, unless you were expecting to find actual mac and cheese in the kroket. It may have started off as mac and cheese (which I doubt) but if it did, it went through a blender before being breaded and fried.

L to R: Chili con carne, spinach & artichoke, chicken curry. Photo by Blondie and Brownie

Universally hated was the salmon and dill (fish is not the most appealing thing to eat after it has been pureed) and the beef kroket kind of tasted like nothing. Both the tomato and mozzarella and chili con carne version were just weird (slightly spicy beans was the dominant flavor in the chile con carne one, I think?)

The salad that you get in the combo (2 krokets and salad for $7.50) provides a nice foil for the fried pockets of goop, and is a pretty good size- especially considering the price of salads in Midtown.

But it wasn’t all completely mediocre…

The Indonesian meatballs w/ french fries!!! Both of these were added to the menu since our first visit, and may just be the best option of all. I don’t know what makes the meatballs Indonesian, but if the thought of Ikea quality meatballs, covered in a sweet Asian style sauce sounds appealing to you- you should be all over this. The french fries are slightly better than average fast food fries, and are hands down the best side dish option. You can (and should) get them instead of the fried rice or fried noodles, no matter what you order.

Finally, we had to try the poffertjes- a traditional Dutch pancake dessert treat (Blondie and Brownie were with us, after all.) I’ve never tried real Dutch poffertjes, but I’m guessing if you have ever had the real thing, these will be a huge disappointment. I’m not one to scoff at mini pancakes, smothered in syrup- and these certainly fit the bill- but if you are expecting something better than the pancake batter that you poured out of a carton when you were a kid, these will be disappointing. It tasted good (of course) but nothing special.

So there you have it. Everything you could possibly want to know about Danku, without having to try a single bite of it yourself. If I had to guess, Danny, Don, Blondie and Brownie probably wish they had read this post before agreeing to go with me. None of them will be returning. I, on the other hand, don’t consider it a total loss. For the price, there are a few things on the menu I could see myself eating again. For example, if I was going to eat a salad- I would want it to be accompanied by 2 fried sticks of goop. And I wouldn’t turn my nose up at those meatballs. But the most important thing you should take away from this, above all is this: If there is something that looks appealing to you… something you think you might like to try… get it with the french fries. The amount of alcohol you have to drink to make the korkets appetizing, is not nearly enough to save the fried rice or the fried noodles.

THE + (What somebody who likes this place would say)

They’ve made some improvements since opening, and that should be commended (in other words, at least they’re trying!)

I love to eat at food courts, and the sweet soy beef and chicken curry are just as good as any food court options

I love shrimp crackers!

I love Dutch fast food krokets! (aka “I love fried goop!”)

Each of the krokets come with their own dipping sauce, which is pretty cool

The salad is great for the price… (and the krokets are just a bonus!)

A kroket lover in particular: “Oh my god, I’m so drunk and the only place I can think of is Danku.”

The french fries are pretty good

I love Ikea meatballs and I love sweet Asian sauce

THE – (What somebody who doesn’t like this place would say)

Hi, my name is Don, Danny, Blondie or Brownie.

The fried rice and fried noodles are terrible. Seriously… they have no redeeming qualities. Order the plain white or brown rice… or just go with the french fries!

I was hoping the krokets would have something in them that resembled some sort of real food product. (They don’t. They’re just fried goop.)

Mac and cheese kroket was really disappointing, if you were expecting fried macaroni and cheese

Nothing on the Indonesian half of the menu bears any resemblance to actual Indonesian food (or any authentic Asian food for that matter). And the poffertjes bear more resemblance to pancake mix out of a carton, than authentic Dutch poffertjes.

Pureed fish makes me want to throw up in my own mouth

It’s not as good as Panda Express. (Super fail)

When I walked by Danku, the Dutch/Indonesian chain on 57th btw. 5+6th earlier today, there was a guy outside handing out free samples of hot chocolate. He told me he’s out there all day, and also hands out bites of their krokets- so if you’ve been interested, and work in the area it may be worth swinging by. The early reviews of this place have ranged from “excellent” (I only saw that once, and based on my experience is highly suspect) to “just ok” to “bland” to “gross”. I did, however, notice one change from my first visit on the day they opened… the noodles they are serving are completely different from the (terrible) ones I tried, and they now come topped with what looks like fried garlic (an authentic Indonesian touch.) All the combos also now come with shrimp crackers, another welcomed improvement. You have to hand it to them… at least they’re trying. I think I’ve given them enough time to sort things out, so a full +/- might be coming soon.

So I’m still waiting in the hopes that Danku (the Dutch/Indonesian fast food place on 57th btw. 5+6th) will see the writing on the wall, and make improvements before I give them the old +/-, but it appears as if the situation is getting bleaker and bleaker by the day. The good news is, they finally got the mac-n-cheese croquettes on the menu. The bad news is, they finally got the mac-n-cheese krokets on the menu. Lunch’er Adam checks in with this report:

“So it’s the new year and Danku finally has mac-n-cheese krokets. Unfortunately they are as “mac-n-cheesy” as the beef krokets are “beefy”, which means they are just a mushy glop of something that tastes like mac-n-cheese. My artificially high expectations for the “dutch-indonesian fast food” has let me down as the food is made with the same TLC as the site’s predecessor (McD’s). I can’t rationalize the krokets as anything better than bar-food, and adding in a dressed-up salad for the “combo” doesn’t make them any more special.”

More from Adam, plus the Village Voice weighs in- after the jump…

“The krokets are good as bar-food to take into one of the local joints like Whiskey Trader or snuck into Whiskey Park, but on their own, I’d pass. For the price I’d rather have the appetizers on Brasil Row (46th btw. 4+6th). The coxinhas/bolinhios/pastels/rissolis (fritters/patties) are about the same price and 10-times the quality and flavor. The only time I’ll be back at danku is when I have some drinking to do and need some grease and starch to buffer the booze. Just my $0.02 :)”

Sarah DiGregorio from Village Voice’s “Fork in the Road” blog agrees, saying “the mac-and-cheese version was filled with a starchy yellow mash that seemed like puréed boxed mac and cheese. Very strange, and not particularly good.” However, she said she may return for the curry chicken krokets, only if she “suddenly had a craving for fried chicken pot pie.”

*Sigh* I hate it when places that seem so exciting in theory, fail to deliver the goods.

Wondering about Danku, the Dutch kroket chain that opened a few weeks back on 57th btw. 5+6th? This update just arrived in the old Midtown Lunch inbox:

“Can we get a review of Danku sometime soon? Or at least an airing of grievances? I went when it first opened up and ordered the krokets and salad, and found them both kinda nasty. Texture is gross because they’re basically fried flavored food starch, there’s nary an actual food item in them. Salad dressing is gross too, tastes really artificial. I went a week ago to try the satay and they said they were out of it. I left cause I didn’t feel like anything else.”

“I went today again and asked for the satay. Again they don’t have it and claim they’re working on the recipe. This time I ordered the Green Chicken Curry and Fried Rice. DOUBLE NASTY. I wish I had eaten it there so I could have complained. The chicken curry is bland and has the texture of canned food. The fried rice is an out and out lie. This rice is not fried at all! It’s just cooked rice with some shreds of rehydrated vegetables, and its mushy and overcooked at that! It has zero flavor, other than that of mushy boil in the bag rice. You being a cheap Chinese food expert will undoubtedly agree with me that this rice has never been fried and therefore is a bald faced cheat. Also worth noting, my tongue has been rather disturbingly tingling since I ate what little I could finish. Very weird. There’s undoubtedly some weird EU preservatives in there, E-850 or SD-200 or whatever the hell they call them in Europe. -Ben”

Once again, I’m going to reserve my criticism until they get everything sorted out… although I will say this: a) I think you are correct about the rice but b) a lot of commenters have liked the krokets. Maybe the mushiness is an acquired taste. (And weird preservatives are hardly unique to Europe… I got that mouth tingling thing the three times I’ve eaten McDonald’s in the past 3 years.)

All in all, it’s good to see they’re working on their “issues.”
