I took a quick peek through the glass, and it looks like the restaurant is nearly operational, so expect an opening soon…

Crisp on Wheels is Launching Thursday

Last month we reported that Crisp, the unique falafel place with 3 locations in New York City, would be launching a food truck. It took a little longer than they expected (it always does) but we’re hearing that they are finally ready to go and the truck will soft launch on Thursday in the Flatiron District (on 26th and Park) serving up falafel and hummus bowls. Crisp on Wheels Taking Brick and Mortar Falafel to the Street Next Month

The grass is always greener? Earlier today Schnitzel & Things, the super popular schnitzel mobile that spends a lot of time in Midtown, became the latest food truck to open a brick and mortar storefront (on 3rd Ave. btw. 45+46th). But the trend is going in the opposite direction as well… we just got word that Crisp, the unique falafel chain with two locations in Midtown (and one Downtown), will be launching its very own food truck next month. “Crisp on Wheels” will offer falafel “handbag” sandwiches, hummus bowls and Amanzi teas, and plans to hit the streets on April 4th. The plan is too soft open in areas like Soho and the Upper East Side, before trying to hit up the mean streets of Midtown (always a good plan) and, naturally, you can track their progress via Twitter and Facebook. Unlike schnitzel or Korean tacos, there isn’t really a shortage of good falafel sandwiches in New York City, but the move from brick and mortar to food truck seems to have worked for Taim…

Crisp’s Baba-Burger is One Messy Sandwich

After reading about Crisp’s new falafel burgers I knew the day would come when my stomach would crave falafel, burger, and fries at the same time and BAM! A few days ago it happened. I went in thinking that I’d get the classic or maybe a chili cheese, until I saw that a new burger has appeared on the menu: The Baba-Burger ($6.25). Babaganoush and goat cheese on a falafel burger?

This is about to get crazy!

I know, the goat cheese makes it look like it’s growing something, but tangy goat cheese and peppery arugula dominated this sandwich. The babaganoush added a nice sauce, but along with the goat cheese, it made for one messy sandwich. I ended up wiping half of mine off, and the burger was still enjoyable. The falafel patty, though, was a bit overwhelmed by everything else.

Of course I got a side of fries ($1.25) since Crisp has some crunchy, but non-greasy fries. They give you a normal size serving, enough to satiate your appetite. Unfortunately, they don’t come spiced or they would be the perfect accompaniment to an actual beef burger.

Crisp Debuts Falafel Burgers and More

What’s slightly healthier than a cheeseburger? A falafel cheeseburger. And for those of you with “Eat healthier” New Year’s Resolutions, our favorite crazy falafel place Crisp, has delivered such a thing. In the past week, Crisp has undergone another menu change, adding three types of falafel burgers, veggie chili, and a design your own sandwich/salad option (allowing us to recreate “The Taj” or “The Asia”). Me, I wanted in on this falafel burger.

The simplest and cheapest of the three burger options ($4.75) is the Crisp Classic: lettuce, tomato, pickle, red onions, American cheese, special dressing, and a falafel patty. It was hard to get a photo of the patty since it was covered in shredded lettuce, but if you’ve had their falafel, you can imagine the goodness that is their patty. It’s just a big flattened falafel ball. I’m ambivalent about the cheese slice, part of me wanted it to be melted on, but the heat for the melting probably would have ruined the patty. The patty’s temperature is more akin to a veggie burger than a hamburger; in fact, the entire meal is more akin to a veggie burger. I did thoroughly enjoy the meal-a side order of their steak fries rounded out my order-and it allows for some unhealthy eating without the need for an afternoon nap. Now the Chili Cheese burger just might be overdoing it though.

We don’t normally promote marketing crap like this- but this bad boy is kind of a good deal if you eat at Crisp enough. The card lets you buy any sandwich, hummus bowl, or salad for just $5 with the purchase of any drink all day, every day. Plus $2 desserts, access to special buy one get one free deals, and reward points for every $1 you spend at Crisp, which can be used as credit for future purchases. The card costs $49, and lasts for 13 months (aka $3.75 a month) so if you go to Crisp at least twice a month the card should easily pay for itself (or so they say.) If you can’t be bothered to do all the math mumbo jumbo necessary to see if the card is worth the $$ to you, we’ve got one to give away for free to one lucky luncher. Crisp Says They’ll Bring Back Indian Falafel if You Follow Them On Twitter

Remember “The Taj”, the crazy Indian falafel that Crisp entered in the Midtown Lunch sandwich challenge? It had poppadums, and a mango chutney in the pita with the falafel- and came with a yogurt dipping sauce on the side. It was delicious, but sadly they took it off the menu after only a few weeks. Well, Crisp sent word yesterday that if their twitter account (@eatatcrisp) reaches 1000 followers by August 21st they will bring back the Taj. A stupid publicity stunt to up their twitter count? Uh… yeah. But if it means the return of The Taj, it’s a small price to pay. Plus, every one of their first 1000 followers on twitter will get a special coupon code they can use to buy the Taj when it returns- and one lucky winner will receive free Crisp for a week.
